April 14, 201115 yr fantastic work by JJ. maybe chris shitstad should take some notes. solid offensive work. we hit some balls hard that were outs. would be very nice to win th series tomorrow and that stupid freddie freeman ruined history. whatever, he has to be on of the most unattractive baseball players in recent memory, right next to tom gorzelany, so ill let freeman have that satisfaction. Or Shitibal Shitchez? Or Shittier Shitzquez?

April 14, 201115 yr Aahahahahaha Shitstad instead of Volstad because he shits instead of Vols!!!! Prarie voles are monogamous.

April 14, 201115 yr Chris Volstad is a #5 pitcher, leave him alone. He's not the best, but he's nothing to complain about. Yeah, it's disappointing to see him like he was yesterday. But what about the first game? Not so bad. You shouldn't be scared of Volstad, you should be scared of Javier Vazquez. And yes, Shittier is indeed French. Shi-tee-yay.
April 14, 201115 yr It is ironic that you made a judgment about someone's intelligence. He's like Marv Albert, baby.

I disagree with this line of thinking. You should worry about Volstad about as much as you'd be worried about Vazquez, at this point. Volstad actually sucks. When you evaluate a pitcher, I don't see the point of saying: "this guy is an ok #5." That's like saying he's the best of the worst of the worst. Who cares? He's not good. Of course, most teams don't have a good #5, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't be concerned every 5th day that pitcher takes the mound. Not only is Volstad mediocre, but he seems to be constantly regressing. He's a sinkerballer with laughable strikeout #'s, non-spectacular walk rates, regressing GB rates, and worst of all, he actually gives up a lot of HR's. Unless you think like Tommy Hutton and think the team will be fine every fifth day "because he's a winner," there's really very little reason to like him. I suppose we should worry more about Vazquez because his roster spot is guaranteed due to his salary, while Volstad is no guarantee to be here if he struggles. I could understand that form of thinking. Either way, I wouldn't be surprised if both of those guys ended up with an ERA in the high 4's/5's, based on what we've seen so far.
April 14, 201115 yr Not to Run the Voletad train off the tracks but this is the game we needed after last nights shitfest. Fotg begins and ends with JJ. Nice offense by the majority if the team.
April 14, 201115 yr he actually gives up a lot of HR's. He gave very few home runs in his first season, a lot of home runs in his second season, and gave up an average amount of home runs in his third. The only season in which his HR/FB was normal was his 3rd. So he'll probably be league average, although I think there's room for improvement in his pitching. He's 24. He can probably get better.
April 14, 201115 yr he actually gives up a lot of HR's. He gave up a lot of home runs in one season, and gave up an average amount of home runs in his second. Which, all in all, leads one to assume that he's below average in that department, as well. The only reason why Volstad's spot in the rotation is guaranteed this year was because he went 8-1 in the second half last year. Something he's unlikely to come close to ever again, considering the way he pitches. Actually, despite his win-loss record, his second half last year was actually worse than his first half, which saw him get sent down to the minors.
April 14, 201115 yr Erick I get what you're saying by the idea that there's no such real position of '#1' or'#5' SP, considering they all play the exact same role on the mound... but in reality you can't have what Philly has. It's not practical. For being the worst pitcher in the rotation, he's not that bad. I wish he was better, but like many things you'll see with me I tend to get bothered more by people who I EXPECT things out of. Wes Helms is funny to me, nothing more. Hanley will drive me insane when he's not hitting. I enjoy Emilio Bonifacio, even though I know he's not that good. Javier pisses me off at the moment. I expected more from Anibal, so his showing the other day was unacceptable.
April 14, 201115 yr I don't think we should be scared of Javier Vasquez. If you watched his last game, you could see he was improving more and more each inning. Just a matter of time before he settles in. As for Volstad, I do think he's regressing, which does scare me. However, like bobob1313 said, he's only 24. Although he's struggling now, he should be given time.
April 14, 201115 yr Good signs, bad signs, whatever. I'll be happy to see change when it's firm and not volatile like it is right now. Sure, he settled down. That's a good sign. Wait for his next start before saying anything else though, ya know?

He's not the same guy; his fastball velocity has dropped and his stuff in general isn't as good as it once was. He was a guy who relied on the strikeout for his success, so he might have to re-invent himself at some point if he's going to have consistent success. As for Volstad, I think it's irrelevant that he's 24. He might improve, but if he improves, his #'s indicate that his upside is limited, anyway. Andrew Miller was 24 once, as well; it doesn't necessarily mean anything.

I hate to do this, because I did this a lot for Andrew Miller, but at this stage of Volstad's career, it's very similar to Roy Halladay when he first came into the big leagues. Minor league numbers were similar, both had good rookie campaigns but then struggled. I just don't think it's appropriate to write off Volstad because he's struggling right now. Maybe a call down to the minors to work on something. But we shouldn't write off Volstad like Miller. Volstad has actually shown he can be good, both in the minors and Majors. Andrew Miller hasn't. Big difference.

Big difference. Lets not do this, again. Halladay's struggles in the big leagues came in his first few years in the big leagues when he didn't even know what his role was. By the time he was 24, he was already having success and he just continued it. Halladay is also a rare case. He's now, arguably, the best in the game and he's clearly a rare exception, not a normality. Expecting someone to magically turn their career around like Halladay did is basically being optimistically delusional, at this point. I'm not saying Volstad won't improve; actually, I wouldn't doubt that he improves some. Certain parts of his game are improving (such as his walk rate, which has improved every year). However, when you look at his overall #'s and his stuff, for that matter, you basically see a guy who just is who he is.
