Posted July 18, 201113 yr I'm thinking Volstad career with the marlins will be over after this season. Jack has been this special advisor to the team and he'll return to that after the season is over. Barring a Volstad comeback miracle, I'm not seeing his return. Especially after the comments from Jack and Chris after today's game. Chris sounded like he wanted to be pulled. Like he could've cared less since he was having an off day. And Jack has singled him out a few times already.

Volstad has had enough time in the majors to show what he is- which is pretty much a 5 ERA pitcher not counting his rookie year, which like so many hundreds of players before him who fizzled out was probably just a fluke. I don't trust guys just because they did well in a partial season as a rookie. (I'm looking at you next, Chris Coghlan).
July 18, 201113 yr I'm still going to give Cogs some time considering he has been injured for a large part of his career. Volstad on the other hand is probably coming to an end with us. Wish Sanabia can get healthy and here's hoping Clay works out starting.

Wish Sanabia can get healthy and here's hoping Clay works out starting. I'm not saying Cogs doesn't deserve time. Winning ROY (dservedly so) earned that. I'm just saying that me may be more of a .260 hitter (or even lower unfortunately) than .300 hitter when its all said and done. And I'm not counting him as a chicken that has already hatched because of it.
July 18, 201113 yr i for one won't shed a tear if Volstad is moved...he doesn't have any great pitch and hangs too many and always has despite being a really tall guy who should be able to throw with a more downward angle so he doesn't continually leave things over the plate hanging and begging to be hit. I've posted before that they should have moved him because he's young and a starter who some teams will probably still view as having potential and might be worth a middling prospect at least in return.

He very well may be a below average hitter when all is done, I just think he has the capability to be .290 hitter at very least when healthy which has been the biggest problem so far. Alot of my thoughts on Cogs are in the Mckeon thread. At this point it's just all theoretical. If he does well in the minors I just hope he gets another chance up ere before the end of the season. Volstad just pisses me off.. He's a poor mans Ricky nolasco.. I say poor mans nolasco because the two pitchers are not even the same quality. A bad Ricky start is a good Volstad start most of the time but Both have inconsistence problems, Volstad just on a more major scale. I just don't know who we replace him with this very moment on a long term scale. I'm sure there are option im just not sure what the bet one is.

I think Cogs has the capability for some very good things, he proved that already. But in the majors, the list of players who are capable of performing well is much larger than the players actually doing so.

I think pitchers need to go through teams a few times before you can get a read on them. Let other teams see him, make their adjustments, and then see if he can adjust to that. Seeing a pitcher on tape is far different than seeing a hitter on tape, IMO. This is why I have always been against ANY pitcher making ROY. And yes, I said that when DTrain got the award. That said, I'm starting to lean towards the original thought of this thread. I think Chris may be gone after this season, if not before. To me that's a disappointment. But maybe a change in coaching staffs will do wonders for him.
July 18, 201113 yr Since his rookie year, Volstad is 26-30 with a 5.00 ERA. I certainly wouldnt shed a tear if we got rid of him. Although fair play to him that his W-L record isnt dramatically bad.
July 18, 201113 yr Fingers crossed, he is the only one of late who has really made the offence work for there win, maybe it is good for the offence to know that its not all plain sailing, but they sure as hell would like it to be. Volstad has shown he isn't good enough, and we really need someone to come and replace him.
July 18, 201113 yr Author I just hope Jack slaps Chris a few times and wakes him up. Its not like he can't pitch. This year he's had some good outings. His mental makeup is horrible.
July 18, 201113 yr just cut his ass already. he has been the same for 3 years now, cant throw strikes and blows up constantly. so f***ing done with his garbage by now. he better not be here next year.
July 18, 201113 yr Before you guys continue to spew worthless crap, I would ask you to take a look at the list of pitchers most similar to him through age 23.
July 18, 201113 yr Before you guys continue to spew worthless crap, I would ask you to take a look at the list of pitchers most similar to him through age 23. they're all mediocre to poor... point is, since his wonderful rookie season, he has a WAR under 0. nothing about that is good.

Similarity scores produce: Ben Sheets, Moose Haas, Brett Hayes, Edinson Volquez, Ryan Dempster, Ervin Santana, Tom Brewer, Melido Perez. In that group there is good, mediocre, and poor. Volstad is at an age when most pitchers are rookies, and pitching is a skill that typically comes later.

While you may have a point about the age thing what are we supposed to do have him continue to lose games until he learns how to pitch?

If there are faults that he is committing that are preventing his success at the major league level, that is something he can be sent down to the minors to work on. Fundamentals and execution are things that are easily worked on and, in fact, best worked on in the minor leagues.
July 18, 201113 yr I'm not ready to give up on him, his performances are inconsistent to say the least, but he has shown from time to time the ability to pitch really well. I remember Jack chewed D-Train a new one after a lackluster performance and after that he pitched extremely well. Hopefully Jack can do the same to Chris.
July 18, 201113 yr His I-don't-care body language reminds me of Hermida boom! end of discussion. /thread
