Posted December 31, 201113 yr The Florida Marlins, it seems, will not be satisfied until they add another starting pitcher to complement right-hander Josh Johnson and lefty Mark Buerhle. Cubs righty Matt Garza, 28, certainly would fit. The Marlins, after failing to land Athletics left-hander Gio Gonzalez, have serious interest in Garza, according to major-league sources. No deal is close, and the Cubs continue to speak to other clubs, including the Detroit Tigers, sources say. The Tigers, in fact, might rate the upper hand for Garza if they are willing to include right-hander Jacob Turner in a deal. The Cubs are desperate for young starting pitching, according to rival executives, and the Marlins are deeper in position players. Class A outfielder Christian Yelich, 20, likely is on the Cubs’ wish list from the Marlins; he was among the players whom the Athletics targeted in their talks with the Marlins about Gonzalez, sources say. Third baseman Matt Dominguez, first baseman Gaby Sanchez, outfielder Chris Coghlan and reliever Jose Ceda are among the other players the Marlins are willing to include in trades, according to rival clubs. One interesting aspect of the Garza discussions is his rising salary in arbitration. Garza could make $10 million this season, with one more year of arbitration left before he becomes a free agent. An interested club could sign right-hander Edwin Jackson, a Type B free agent, to a longer deal for a salary in a similar range without trading prospects or forfeiting draft picks. Jackson, 28, is less accomplished than Garza, but over the past three seasons their records are comparable. Jackson is 35-30 with a 3.96 ERA, Garza 33-32 with a 3.73 ERA. -Ken Rosenthal http://mlbbuzz.yardbarker.com/blog/mlbbuzz/marlins_interested_in_garza/9048817?new_post=true
December 31, 201113 yr The farm system is pretty weak and I believe Matty D could still be a valuable commodity for the future. Oswalt would be the ideal path to take.

If we have the opportunity to get Roy Oswalt on a 1 year deal, we do it. Easily. Next year, the market for FA pitchers will be a lot more plentiful than this one. It should be easier to score a top or middle of the rotation guy. Demand won't be nearly as high. EDIT: That being said, I wouldn't complain if Garza is brought in. He is a pretty solid pitcher. I just believe there are better courses of action. But on the flip side, there definitely could be worse...
December 31, 201113 yr But only if that means Matt Dominguez and nothing serious outside of him. I'd give up Dominguez and the rest of the garbage that is our farm system. Realistically, we basically have no shot, as was the case with Gio.

Otherwise, when it becomes a numbers game... the only way we start to lose the trade is when we're giving up too many young players because then we go from screwed to f***ed.
January 1, 201213 yr Just start a thread like "Marlins Interested In ...........(fill in the blank)" I imagine right now they are looking at every rumored tradeable person out there. When you have the expendable cash and a brand new ball park, FA signings are fairly easy. It's the trades that can make you or break you, keeping in mind that you still have to spend wisely. Or you become the Mets. Pass on Garza. Nice fit, but not a great fit. Go for the great fit.

This problem with the lack of talent in the farm system has to be the biggest disappointment of the year. If only Beinfest could have hit on at least 1 first round pick we may have had the necessary commodity to make the needed trade for Gonzalez. Yes we brought up Stanton, LoMo and Coghlin in the recent times, but still take a few years ago when we had 5 1st round picks in the same draft and the only one that has ever been any good is Volstad and that is not saying much. How can you miss on 5 picks in the 1st round in one draft ? And its more than that. His record is very mediocre at best. Its time for Loria to spend some of that cash on a better scouting department.
January 1, 201213 yr Because the draft, as explained again and again, is a crap-shoot. Some first rounders end up sucking horribly, some people drafted in late rounds end up as hall of fame players. It happens. You take a chance and hope for the best. These are kids and young adults you're trying to judge talent for with other players at their same current talent level [whether it be high school or college], not proven free agents.

Good explanation, you could even use Skippy as an example of this. Also the Marlins made changes in this area before the season ended, so hopefully we can all see better prospects in the near future. As for Garza I don't think the Marlins have enough to offer the Cubs for him considering the haul the Rays got from the Cubs in the first place.

In 2005 most of the really good players had already been taken before the Marlins even got to pick (in the first ten picks or so). The Marlins really only missed out on Ellsbury, Garza, Buchholz, and Rasmus. Four players sounds like a lot, but remember that was over the course of almost 30 picks. They didn't even have a shot at Upton, Zimmerman, Braun, Tulo, or McCutchen. Being able to draft early helps a lot. That's why I was hoping that the Marlins would tank this past season much more than they did after it was clear that they weren't going to win anything.
January 1, 201213 yr Yeah, there seem to be a lot more quality players taken in the top 10-15 than the bottom half of the 1st round, at least just from eyeballing it. Sandwich picks are out of that top-15 range.

January 1, 201213 yr Gaby, ceda, Dominguez, and James/Rassmussen should do it. Would like to keep yelich. But the team must be pissed Missing out on cj and gio. Kind of wish we got Wilson.

I doubt that would do it, but I could be wrong. But with Epstein at the Helm, they will want quality, not quantity.
