January 2, 201214 yr Say you include Gaby in a trade and we don't get Cespedes or he sucks when he gets here, that puts us two holes down in the lineup. Lf and cf. I'm not fully convinced that cogs , Peterson and Boni could manage over the course of the year. I'm hoping that all three can be solid but neither have a long major league history to judge over and Boni hasnt really been starting much before last year.
January 2, 201214 yr Just met rich waltz at whole foods. Had a 25 minute conversation with him and he said he really doesn't see the marlins going after Cespedes.

January 2, 201214 yr "Remaining One-Year Deal Starters By Tim Dierkes [January 2 at 9:15am CST] So far this offseason, starting pitchers Erik Bedard, Freddy Garcia, Chien-Ming Wang, and Jason Marquis have signed one-year deals. On average, they're guaranteed just under $4MM apiece. This type of starter can return great value, as Dave Cameron of FanGraphs recently explained. Who are the remaining free agent starters expected to sign one-year deals? As our free agent tracker shows, the starting pitching market is rife with one-year deal candidates. Wei-Yin Chen, Bartolo Colon, Jeff Francis, Jon Garland, Rich Harden, Hisashi Iwakuma, Edwin Jackson, Hiroki Kuroda, Paul Maholm, Roy Oswalt, Brad Penny, Joel Pineiro, and Joe Saunders should all be in line for Major League deals. Jackson is a lock for a multiyear deal, while Chen, Maholm, and Saunders have good shots. Kuroda and Oswalt seem to prefer one year, and are popular targets. Guys like Colon and Francis are coming off solid seasons and have cases for multiyear deals, since Aaron Harang, Chris Capuano, and Bruce Chen were able to get two years. Francis has a better chance than Colon, but those two-year offers are going to dry up shortly. Starters such as Aaron Cook, Kyle Davies, Zach Duke, Livan Hernandez, Kevin Millwood, Ross Ohlendorf, Tim Wakefield, and Chris Young are also on the market. Hernandez and Millwood have the best arguments for big league deals. In January, 40-man rosters generally have some room, but not so much once we hit February." Why exactly are we busting our heads over this? If we can't get Garza I am sure we can sign a few of these guys off this list and have them compete. Some names on this list have actually been successful in the big leagues before like Kevin Milwood, Zach Duke, Tim wakefield, WHY NOT HIROKI KURODA???????
January 3, 201214 yr Just start a thread like "Marlins Interested In ...........(fill in the blank)" I imagine right now they are looking at every rumored tradeable person out there. When you have the expendable cash and a brand new ball park, FA signings are fairly easy. It's the trades that can make you or break you, keeping in mind that you still have to spend wisely. Or you become the Mets. Pass on Garza. Nice fit, but not a great fit. Go for the great fit. Because he's not left-handed, amirite? He won't admit it, but that's probably what he means. The front office and Frisaro are saying they are looking for another top of the line lefty. And they have shown it. Anyone can see it, unless you are just ignoring things because they don't fit your thinking. Personally, if a righty is very good filling in the spot that a lefty would handle, so be it. So.....If you have a problem with them trying to zero in on a lefty then you should take it up with them instead of me. I'm just commenting on the obvious. You're a very open-minded guy.
January 3, 201214 yr Righty or lefty, who cares....just get a damn good starting pitcher. I'm a better fit than Matt Garza because I'm left-handed.

January 3, 201214 yr Wait so are you in Canada or in Florida? I am born in Montreal and grew up in South Florida before going back to Montreal for university and I still spend most of the time there. Parents and a lot of family live in Florida.

I would rather have Volstad than Chen, Colon, Francis, Garland, Harden, Iwakuma, Penny, Pineiro, Saunders, Cook, Davies, Duke, Livan, Millwood, Ohlendorf, Wakefield, and Young. This team needs to upgrade if they are going to do something, not get other whatever guys. Volstad can eat innings as good as any of these guys, and arguably, had a better 2nd half and it's not out of the realm of possibility he takes a step forward. He was statistically the unluckiest pitcher in baseball last year. See, http://www.fangraphs.com/fantasy/index.php/pitchers-luck-part-time-starters/ Volstad is not a bad option. There is just potential to realistic upgrade because he's not a world beater because he doesn't have a great K rate/gives up a ton of bombs. That leaves Edwin Jackson - totally cool if its a 4/$44 type deal, he is under rated and a very solid 3. He would mix well with the Marlins group. Kuroda - would be awesome on a 1 year but he is going to stay on the west coast Maholm - This is a toss up, but I have always irrationally liked him and thought he is a better pitcher than his stats. Plus he's a lefty. Saying that, it would have to be cheap because if it's a lot more than Volstad in salary or years, no thanks Oswalt - Would be tremendous on a 1 year deal. And Vazquez fits in here too So why we are banging our heads on this, because Garza is better than those 4 for one, two, the players named who the Cubs would be potentially interested in do not matter longterm to this franchise in comparison to getting Matt Garza, and three who knows what Edwin, Kuroda, Maholm, or Oswalt (and throw in Vazquez if you want) really want as they can pick their location. My point is, there is not this huge list here. There is a handful at most, some immediately don't work, and the team needs to grab one of these very limited guys if they are going to do something.

January 3, 201214 yr I really think that Oswalt is by far the best fit for the Marlins right now. They won't have to give up any players to get him. Since the Marlins didn't land Pujols, it's pretty key to keep both Gaby and Logan right now. Even Dominguez might see some playing time if/when Hanley/Reyes get injured. Does anyone realistically expect both of those guys to be giving you 162 games? I'd also like the opportunity for the Marlins to reassess their rotation next offseason when there should be a lot of arms on the market. Signing Oswalt to a one-year contract does this.
January 3, 201214 yr Getting Garza and Byrd for Gaby/Dominguez/prospects and signing Cespedes would be an awesome offseason. Johnson, Garza, Buehrle, Sanchez and Nolasco is a top rotation.. Bullpen would be stacked... and having Byrd and Dobbs on the bench would be spectacular. Byrd being able to play all 3 OF positions also allows Boni to play the IF when need be. I would definitely be for this move.

I agree that we need to keep our offense as strong as possible, and I'm a fan of keeping some prospects around, too. You need to mix in young, inexpensive players eventually, even with a $100MM payroll. Oswalt is our best bet at doing this, and he has arguably the best 2012 upside of the available pitchers. In that situation, I'd probably want to keep Volstad around, too. Then, we have a 6th starter we can stomach, and we get another year to see if he can figure things out and become a #4/strong #5.
January 4, 201214 yr Volstad would be nice to keep around if/when Johnson (or anyone else) is injured. I don't think that LeBlanc is much of an upgrade and I'm not even sure what role the Marlins have envisioned for Sanabia.
