April 11, 201214 yr Dumb comments by Ozzie but suspension is stupid After reflecting on the matter....... The suspension isn't stupid. If one of my employees were saying something that was detrimental to my company a suspension would be the least of his/her worries. Ozzies comments weren't stupid. iladvised(sp), but not stupid. He is an American citizen. He has a right to speak his mind. The way the local and national media, and the Cuban community totally blew this out of proportion is stupid. Now let's move on.
April 11, 201214 yr The best way for Ozzie to heal his relationship with the Cubans of Miami is to win games. He already said what he said and has apologized profusely for his comments. Now more than ever it's important for him to just win games and lead his team to the playoffs. However, even if the Marlins win a bunch of games when he comes back I think it's still possible that he'll face further punishment. If enough fans don't show up to the games because of his comments and the team suffers financially then he may actually end up being fired, regardless of apology or contrition. I don't think it'll happen as being a popular energetic manager Guillen has a ton of support (and I don't think his comments effected a large enough amount of people)-but ya never know. One thing to keep in mind is that Loria would have to take a share of the blame were he to fire Ozzie as he should have been responsible enough to know that Ozzie is the type of manager who could just explode at any time without notice.
April 11, 201214 yr I saw the people on Espn at the stadium, like I figured, it's a bunch of old ladies. This will pass.
April 11, 201214 yr I already feel like this is over..... No talking about it on sports radio (10 mins drive to work).
April 11, 201214 yr I don't feel it's over at all... Sure they're not talking about it on sports radio but the sentiment is still there. I seriously am worried that attendance will be affected
April 11, 201214 yr I seriously am worried that attendance will be affected I'm sure there's a substantial amount of Cubans that won't go to any games right now because of Ozzie's blunder, but being that there has only been 1 (regular season) game played so far in the new stadium I strongly guess that there are plenty of people who'll still go to the games just to check out the stadium (if not the Clevelander girls). If this happened torwards the end of the season when the stadium may not feel so "new" anymore then it may be a different story. But so early into the season I'm pretty certain that this mishap won't effect future attendances-assuming the upset parties don't take all year to grant Ozzie forgiveness.
April 11, 201214 yr I don't feel it's over at all... Sure they're not talking about it on sports radio but the sentiment is still there. I seriously am worried that attendance will be affected It will be impossible to tell one way or the other.
April 11, 201214 yr The question is whether or not the Cuban exile community and its environs will let it die. This issue may have diminished from 790 the Ticket and 'QAM, but is Radio Mambà still talking about this?
April 11, 201214 yr I don't feel it's over at all... Sure they're not talking about it on sports radio but the sentiment is still there. I seriously am worried that attendance will be affected I really doubt attendance will be seriously affected. I don't think the younger generation - the one who would generally go to the games - really cares.
April 11, 201214 yr I already feel like this is over..... No talking about it on sports radio (10 mins drive to work). Opposite to what you heard on my nearly 30 minute ride in to work it was 75-80% on Ozzie and the suspension wasn't enough. It was NOT Spanish radio.

A thread on this board doesn't hit +500 replies if it's nothing to talk about. Feel like everyone on here has kinda forgotten about the Clevelander babes ever since Ozzie's screwup.

Granted I'm not Hispanic, but I'm guessing that Spanish radio is much like English radio...the people that call in are not representative of the ENTIRE population. You get the vocal minority calling in to radio shows. Most people (of any race, nationality, whatever) don't care enough about any one particular subject to take the time out of their day to call in and voice their opinion. Besides, angry lunatics make for better radio...so that's who gets on the air.
April 11, 201214 yr Where can i get the FULL quote? Both the love and respect part -- love part not in OP? tried goggling on my phone -- it's annoying cause it's hard to find -- that's part of the problem. I'd say 80% of the people probably haven't even read the full quote cause it's so hard to find.

April 11, 201214 yr Ozzie Guillen is viewed unfavorably by nearly half of Cuban-Americans surveyed in an ESPN-commissioned poll, but nearly two-thirds of Miami residents, and 56 percent of Cuban-Americans, think Guillen should keep his job despite comments about Fidel Castro that earned the Miami Marlins' manager a five-game suspension. Only 27 percent of Miami-area Cuban-Americans view Guillen favorably, while 28 percent view him "extremely unfavorably," according to a survey of more than 900 adults in the Miami media market. The survey was conducted on Tuesday by ESPN and the Global Strategy Group and included more than 200 Cuban-Americans. The overall margin for error is plus-or-minus 3.2 percent. The survey found that nearly three out of four Cuban-Americans found Guillen's comments that he "loves" Castro and respects him for staying in power for as long as he has offensive. Half found the comments very offensive. Despite that, 69 percent of sports fans and 62 percent of baseball fans said Guillen should keep his job. One-third of Cuban Americans said he should be fired, but 56 percent said he should remain the manager of the Marlins. Guillen returned to Miami on Tuesday to hold a televised news conference, where he apologized and attempted to explain his remains, which were made to a reporter for Time Magazine. Guillden's apology was enough for 62 percent of sports fans, and 56 percent of baseball fans. However, only 43 percent of Cuban-Americans felt his apology went far enough. In terms of the five-game suspension, the survey found that 29 percent of respondents felt the suspension was too light; 37 percent of Cuban-Americans felt it should have been harsher. A majority of respondents felt the punishment was fair or even too severe. The survey also found that 26 percent of Miami residents, and 37 percent of Cuban-Americans, said they would attend fewer Marlins games because of Guillen's comments. The automated survey asked respondents to use their touch-tone phone to respond to pre-recorded questions. per Espn
April 11, 201214 yr I already feel like this is over..... No talking about it on sports radio (10 mins drive to work). It's not over, if it was over I wouldn't still be seeing articles about it, kind of sick of talking about it now though lets move on this isn't about politics it's about Marlins baseball. Fans are and aren't going to show up regardless of what Ozzie says.
April 11, 201214 yr His "dumb" comments were taken out of context... No, they were not. Yea... they were. "I love Fidel Castro." "I respect Fidel Castro," he said. "You know why? A lot of people have wanted to kill Fidel Castro for the last 60 years, but that [guy] is still here." He said nothing about supporting what Castro did when he was Prime Minister and President of Cuba. These were just "dumb" comments, that is all.

April 11, 201214 yr It's natural with trash strewn about their field, they'd also have trash in their newspapers.
April 11, 201214 yr does anyone believe there is any chance ozzie loses his job over this if attendance is bad and ticket sales take a hit?
April 11, 201214 yr does anyone believe there is any chance ozzie loses his job over this if attendance is bad and ticket sales take a hit? If attendance takes a big hit then there's no doubt in my mind that he'll face severe punishment. But like I and others have said-his comments hurt only a small amount of fans who actually attend games.
