April 10, 201214 yr Anyways, it looks as if he'll still be the manager by Friday....and most likely not assassinated.
April 10, 201214 yr Being born in America is not a lottery. Generations of people fought, died, lived, and sacrificed to make our country great.
April 10, 201214 yr I still can't believe how much this has blown up. His word choice was awful, but the ultimate point of his statement was that he respects the guy for avoiding getting assassinated with so many people out to get him for 60+ years. The problem with this whole goddamn thing was he put the words "love" and "respect" next to the name Castro. If you take away those two words, Ozzie has a point (although that point really wasn't necessary to be publicized), the same point he made a few years back but with a different style of wording it. However, Ozzie is terrible with using politically correct terms. He called Jay Mariotti a fag a few years back, when in reality he meant that Mariotti was a terrible sportswriter who was a pain in the ass. Ozzie is not smart in how he deals with the media, that's a given fact and has been one for years. But I still absolutely hate how the media has sensationalized the story the way they have. I understand that Cubans in Miami have their opinions on Castro, but Ozzie wasn't in any way referring to Castro's politics, or policies, or even how he has treated the people of Cuba. He was just saying that he thought the guy was a tough SOB, which he is.

April 10, 201214 yr Damn, I'm half-Cuban and my family ran from Cuba so that I can live. Castro is a SOB of the tallest order, but Ozzy was just saying what many people say, even I've said it to my friends before. Castro is like a f***ing cockaroach, you can't kill his ass, he's outsmarted the USA for how many years? That's all Ozzy was saying. Even in the older comment about Castro , he said he didn't believe in his philosophy. I'm still shocked that that bastard is still alive. This is not effing CUBA!!!WTF is going on around here? It's time to move on. If some Cuban organization tries to get him fired I'm going down there as a Cuban and I'm goiong to protest their dumbasses. Effing bulls***. One thing I've always hated about the Cubans, they're always so anal about Castro? Why? If Cubans hate him so much then get rid of his azz! South Florida is one of the poorest areas in the whole United States, good job guys. So pissed about this. . .( not at Ozzy)
April 10, 201214 yr The man is a dictator and that's a fact and has been for years. This is not atypical for the region. Well, yes, it is totally atypical for the "region." Other than Grenada, which Castro tried to subvert and we prevented, nowhere in the Caribbean has there ever been another Communist regime. Every island in the Caribbean other than Cuba has some form of democracy. My main issue is the Hitler comparison (especially used by ESPN) which is no where near based in reality Any reference to Hitler is only valid in the context of Castro killing millions of people. 2 million will probably turn out to be very low. Reminiscent of the leftist idiots who didn't think that Stalin had killed anyone, yet it turned out that 30+ million died between his purges and collectivizations and the ensuing starvation. Check back in 20 years when Fidel and Raul are long-dead, Cuba is again free and the truth of the Castros' murderous brutality finally comes out.
April 10, 201214 yr I wont read through 17 pages of rants but I'll give my two cents ... I believe that Ozzies comments were wrong, he was brought to the marlins first to manage the team and secondly (and probably most importantly) to bring the latin community to baseball in south florida, yet within 5 days he has set the team back and has alienated the team from the community with those comments. Ozzie was more important than just a manager, the team NEEDED a latin figure to manage them and Ozzie just broke that. I am Venezuelan and a fan of Ozzie as well as the marlins but I think that those comments have more to them than "freedom of speech" ... this has nothing to do with freedom of speech, it has a lot to do with hurting your team image from the man that was supposed to bridge that gap. This is all politics, and I also blame the Mariel mafia for this cos I am sure they are behind the push for the marlins to take further action than just 5 games. I do believe that the suspension was needed and a nice PR move, but 5 games into the season, on the marlins 1st season in the new stadium and blah blah surely dampens the whole celebration. I guess we'll see what the reaction from the community is once the marlins get back into town.
April 10, 201214 yr Being born in America is not a lottery. Generations of people fought, died, lived, and sacrificed to make our country great. Thats the problem with our country, people who thnk it's great, so arrogant and resting on our laurels, As our country crumbles around our heads, I keep hearing how great we are, as we fall further and further behind in education, technology, etc. Go teach in a South Fl. public school and then tell me how great this country is? ( Dillard, Miramar, go ahead take a trip to some schools in our great neighborhood) We have to make the USA great again, we are very far away from great.
April 10, 201214 yr I read somewhere in this thread that about 200 people showed up to the protest? I thought that was a decent amount until I just read that around the same amount of people showed up for a Petrino rally at Arkansas.
April 10, 201214 yr One thing I've always hated about the Cubans, they're always so anal about Castro? Why? If Cubans hate him so much then get rid of his azz! Really? Why are "they" so anal about Castro, you can't be seriously asking that. How would you suggest "they" get rid of him?

Now, let's see what you have to say about what I said 5 pages ago: Media frenzy over nothing but word-choice. By someone for whom English is a second language, not to mention being well-known as something less than fully facile and excruciatingly exacting when he's speaking English. Castro is a despicable, mass-murdering thug, but Ozzie had a valid point -- it IS amazing that the monstrous Fidel has survived. His problem was his use of the words "love" and "respect" anywhere near the word "Castro," although even that is at least partially (and maybe fully) redeemed by his calling Castro a MFer in the same sentence. If he'd said "A lot of people have tried to kill that MFer for 60 years and it's amazing that he's still alive and it's too bad that someone didn't succeed," everyone would be fine with it. Which is probably what he meant, more or less. Perhaps Ozzie will consider his choice of words more carefully in the future, but I doubt it. Making ill-considered, off-the-wall comments is what he does. Meanwhile, media whores will try to sell as many papers and click-throughs as they can, based on nothing but the verbal stumble of someone who almost always operates his mouth before fully engaging his brain and choosing his words carefully. It's too bad Ozzie didn't decide to become a lawyer and run his mouth in a courtroom. The list of sanctions imposed by various judges would be as long as your arm and make for hilarious reading. Meanwhile, he's not going anywhere and I look forward to the next "controversy." Probably won't be more than a month from now.

Cute, but you know what I meant by "region" (Central/S America). And just cause there is a "form of democracy" doesn't exclude the government being autocratic. Your arguments are obviously guided by a partisan bias so I'll call it a day and leave you with a go marlins.

Why are "they" so anal about Castro, you can't be seriously asking that. How would you suggest "they" get rid of him? Look , he's still in f***ing power OK, yeah some of my family died, all our farmland was taken, but we fled Cuba, we didn't stay and fight Castro right? I'm an American,. If the people wanted Castro out it would happen, where are the protests in Cuba, they even had a protest in China, sorry man, effing China, look at Egypt, Lybia, Syria, etc. . .When will the Cubans rise up? Do you want the USA to take out Castro? At a certain point the Cubans have to do something right or will they wait forever and just take it? I can only make one assumption. . .
April 10, 201214 yr This really reflects poorly on Miami as a community and even moreso the talking heads around the nation in various media formats whether it be television or radio. If you're too dumb and lazy to read beyond what some tiny little headline says and actually LOOK at the FULL comment it would be as easy as pie to figure out that at no point did he say he loves Castro's politics. It takes all of 10 seconds to read and understand what he was saying if you read the entire quote and not just the bit taken out of context. . I'm shocked that so many people in the media are blasting him over this, someone has to actually do their job before going on air and rambling about this bs right? Apparently not. And Miami, it's pathetic if you stop going to games or protest because you too can't be bothered to take a single minute out of your day to read the full statement. Ugh, this is disgusting.
April 10, 201214 yr Author Showtime must be loving this. If there were any doubts that the Marlins were the best team to cover, you can be certain that they are gone now.
April 10, 201214 yr Showtime must be loving this. If there were any doubts that the Marlins were the best team to cover, you can be certain that they are gone now. They were in question whether the episodes would be 30 minutes or 60 minutes long. I don't think 60 minutes is gonna be enough now.
April 10, 201214 yr The way this has been overblown by the media and politicians is completely ridiculous. I know it is an election year, but to use this story as a way to gain some votes is distasteful. Calling for Ozzie's dismissal by Commissioner Martinez for a few votes is a poor political move, and shows Commissioner Martinez can not read a few lines and tell Ozzie's comment had an unintended effect, and he probably did not express himself the way he wanted to. It's clear Ozzie can express himself better in Spanish and he most likely misstated a few words in his comments, but that is no reason for a dismissal. Ozzie "shoots from the hip" when he comments on things, and hopefully will learn a few lessons from this. But the way this is being portrayed by the media and politicians is very disappointing to me. Castro is a terrible person who has caused much harm, Ozzie knows that and never said he supported him or his philosophy and actions, he simply highlighted the fact that Castro has resisted so many entities attempting to remove him from power. Get over it and let's play some baseball.
