August 24, 201213 yr Can Crawford even be traded, considering he's on the DL? Thought that was a rule, for some reason. With commissioner approval, yes.
August 24, 201213 yr Looks like it's going to be De La Rosa, Webster, Loney, DeJesus, and Sands going from LA to Boston.
August 25, 201213 yr I didn't like the Dodgers prospects when we were dealing with a Hanley trade. I don't care for them anymore now in this trade. The Red Sox win this trade by trading Josh Beckett and Carl Crawford's contracts. That's like trading two Joe Johnson's at once. Add in the fact that Adrian Gonzalez is jut an above average first baseman now and not a superstar that he was when the Sox traded for him (and his contract still has a lot of money due to him), and there's no doubt the Red Sox are going to be better off long term after this. I'm sure they wish they had Anthony Rizzo and Casey Kelly back though. Rizzo's gonna be Gonzalez (good A Gon) in a few years.
August 25, 201213 yr Hanley and Beckett on the same team? Gooooo... whoever the hell they're playing!
August 25, 201213 yr The difference between Hanley and Beckett? Hanley is a piece of sh*t and an issue to the team, but Josh Beckett just flat out sucks. Fat turd who will pitch when he feels like pitching. Furthest thing from an 'ace'.
August 25, 201213 yr Can Crawford even be traded, considering he's on the DL? Thought that was a rule, for some reason. CC already cleared waivers before he landed on DL. So, that's no problem for approving.
August 25, 201213 yr Jon Heyman @JonHeymanCBS carl crawford has approved the trade to #dodgers. new details in story on http://CBSsports.com Jon Heyman @JonHeymanCBS josh beckett has approved the trade to #dodgers. 2 for 2. getting close. Jon Heyman @JonHeymanCBS with beckett and crawford OKing trade to LA, a final hurdle is beckett's physical. @CBSSports http://cbsprt.co/Nn0Rb7 Almost done, I think. One way or another, Dodgers must win the WS. If they wouldn't, CC and A-Gone's contracts will turn into the apocalypse.
August 25, 201213 yr Red Sox, Dodgers Complete Nine-Player Blockbuster By Mike Axisa [August 25, 2012 at 8:19am CST] The Dodgers and Red Sox have completed a massive nine-player blockbuster trade that will send Josh Beckett, Adrian Gonzalez, Carl Crawford, and Nick Punto to Los Angeles for James Loney and four prospects, reports Michael Silverman of The Boston Herald. The prospects are expected to be Allen Webster, Ivan De Jesus, Jerry Sands, and Rubby De La Rosa. The Red Sox will pay just $12MM of the over $270MM owed to Beckett, Crawford, Gonzalez, and Punto according to Silverman. from mlbtraderumors.com Tonight we might be facing improved Dodgers.
August 25, 201213 yr So, Red sox will become Marlins' potential rival of next stove season. They reduced over 50M of season payroll after the blockbuster.
August 25, 201213 yr If the all the players the Dodgers have acquired produce like they have this season prior to trades they could finish 3rd. At this rate Magic is going to run out of money quick picking up these bad contracts
August 25, 201213 yr I guess the Red Sox realized they don't need to spew hundreds of millions of dollars out to suck. They can do that for cheap.
August 25, 201213 yr So is LA paying all of this or something? I saw a tweet or article or something that said the Red Sox would be paying 12 million.
August 25, 201213 yr It seems like these monster 7+ year contracts almost always prove to be disasters in the end. It's hard for any player to maintain performance for that period of time and the contracts are always backloaded. If I were a GM, I would categorically refrain from offering anything beyond 5-6 years (and those would be done sparingly).
August 25, 201213 yr So, I think this trade rivals the marlins dodgers trade of 98, except Sheffield and Johnson were at the top of their games, and the Dodgers gave up Piazza. Amazing either way, historical. A big change from McCourt and FoxCorp back in the day.

I would only give out long term deals like that to young position players like Stanton/Trout. Buy out arbitration and free agency years.Maybe a few exceptions here or there for free agents but I wouldn't go over board with it. These deals never seem to work out, like you said. For pitchers, I would only go 3 years, maybe 4.
