June 15, 201313 yr Everyone's reporting that Miguel Olivo has been asking for his release for sometime. Herald had an article but cant repost from my phkne. Olivo walked out during last nights games after being denied his release once more. Can't really blame the guy. Marlins aren't hardly using him and there's plenty of scrub guys in the minors to replace him if need be. I'd venture to say Solano could be up and doing the same thing Miguel can plus it give us another infielder. Got to say I kinda side with Olivo on this one. Just give the guy his release.
June 15, 201313 yr Pretty dick move by fish. Was pretty baffling they kept him around. Release him for Christ's sake
June 15, 201313 yr Yeah, I don't get why the Marlins need two shitty veteran back-up catchers on the roster anyway. Just release the guy.
June 15, 201313 yr At least Olivo had some power, more than I can say for Mathis, was also surprised that he was still around after LoMo got activated Thats two players on the restricted list, nice to see the Marlins are leading the league in something besides losses
June 15, 201313 yr Actually, I'd probably rather have Olivo be the back-up than Mathis too. They would never cut Mathis though because he was the linch pin of the Toronto trade.
June 15, 201313 yr Author I forgot about ol' Austin Kearns. I wonder what the "family matters" could be.
June 15, 201313 yr Pretty dick move by fish. Was pretty baffling they kept him around. Release him for Christ's sake don't agree, he has a contract-too bad Olivo didn't like that they were just keeping him as security. It is not as if everyone is clamoring for a .203 catcher. As Redmond said, he left them shorthanded with Lomo out and Polanco out. He should have waited till after the game to breach his contract-as if that makes it allright.

Guy can't get a start in 30 days? Not even an "atta boy" start after that home run game a few days ago. Not like Mathis' was doing anything productive. I don't blame the dude for being pissed. You sign a contract to play. It's not like he hasn't talked to the team over and over about it. Everybody around the league loves Miguel olivo. It's not like it was a guy with a personality of Heath bell. Do the guy a solid if pinch hitting is the only thing you holding him for
June 15, 201313 yr Why the heck were the Marlins still keeping him on the the roster anyway?? Stupid. Who keeps 3 catchers? Especially when they're not even using Olivo anymore. It's typical Marlins. I guess Olivo asked to be released and the team wouldn't give it to him. Why the hell not??

The marlins were the only team to offer him a MLB job, now that guaranteed pay isn't good enough for him, or the service time towards his pension and benefits. What an ungrateful fuck.
June 16, 201313 yr I think both sides have their fault here. I understand olivos opinion but walking out pre game was unprofessional.
June 16, 201313 yr The PBP says he started taking balls at 1B about a month ago, but then stopped a couple of weeks ago against the wishes of the team because he wasn't getting any playing time at 1B, either. Most guys say they'll do anything, absolutely anything their team asks -- and mean it. Olivo, essentially an over-the-hill scrub at this point, couldn't be bothered to continue to work on playing 1B because he wasn't getting any time at 1B. Now, he can't be bothered to show up at all because he isn't playing anywhere. What's the matter with this idiot? He signed a contract for 800K for the entire season. He could have sat on the bench the entire rest of the year and collected the entire 800K. As it is now, he's on the restricted list and the Marlins could leave him sitting there -- unpaid -- for the entire rest of the year. He might have thrown away about 480K. They can trade him, but it costs them nothing to just ignore him. Who needs or wants an average catcher hitting 200 who has an attitude, anyway?
June 16, 201313 yr I don't fault the Marlins one bit here. If they released him as he requested, they'd owe him the remainder of his contract. You can not just walk out because you don't get your way. I say leave him on the restricted list the rest of the year.

June 16, 201313 yr I can understand olivo having some pride but he has to understand his role is now as a backup. I feel like the bench guys should be a bit offended by this in the sense that olivo seems like he's arrogantly refusing to be a bench player. Not that anyone should strive for a bench role but if ur barely hitting .200 on the tail end of ur career, don't act like ur too good to be on the bench. I'd honestly like to hear Pierre and Dobbs opinions on all this. Say what u will about their lack of performance at times, neither guy bitches about their role on this team.

Huh? I didn't say he didn't care -- he obviously wants to play and quit because he wasn't. As I mentioned, he unilaterally stopped practicing at 1B because he wasn't getting any playing time at 1B. Rodriguez of the Sun-Sentinel says his source told him the guy has threatened to quit over playing time before Friday. I pointed out that he's an idiot for throwing a half-mill in the toilet by quitting instead of accepting a pure bench role. He thinks he deserves lots of starts, the Marlins obviously think otherwise. He's apparently not bright enough to figure out that if he's not good enough to start here, he's probably not going to start anywhere. So he quits in the middle of game preparation and leaves his teammates and manager in the lurch with only 22 guys able to play. Allegedly, someone begged him to hang around until someone from the FO could talk to him. Nope, he couldn't be bothered to wait for what I'll guess would have been 5 or 10 minutes. So, now he probably gets to sit, unpaid for the rest of the year. He'll be 35 in a month. Well, 35 assuming we know how old he really is -- he's from DR. Unless some team has a couple of catchers go down in the next month, he may as well retire because nobody is likely to offer squat for him and he remains under Marlins control until the end of the year.
June 16, 201313 yr In other former marlin news. chris volstad was sent to AAA by the rockies and was replaced by logan kensing.
