October 31, 201312 yr I think Youk could really help this team, at least in the patience department. He could fit into the back end of the lineup nicely. I also think Pena would be a great addition considering the FO is hell bent on playing Mathis a bunch of the time. Little additions like that could make a big difference if they actually pay off.
October 31, 201312 yr ESPN insider mentions Youk as an option for the Marlins on a one-year deal... http://insider.espn.go.com/blog/mlb/rumors/post?id=8919&ex_cid=espnapi_public That could work, since I figure Moran will be ready by the end of the year

November 3, 201312 yr Well Frisaro says that after arbitration guys get paid we should be at about 20 million which means we could have around 20 million to spend to get to 38-40 million. And of course we are paying Heath Bell 4 million and Ozzie 2.5 but we get back the 3 million we paid for each of Buehrle and Reyes.
November 3, 201312 yr MLB Trade Rumors indicates the Tigers won't be bringing back Brayan Pena. His splits against RHP (.801 OPS) suggest he could make a nice platoon partner with... say... Jeff Mathis, who can't hit righties to save his life but can actually hit a lefty or two. And he's certainly going to be a player within our budget. Thoughts? That's a Marlins-like platoon for sure. Brayan Pena is not that good and Jeff Mathis can't hit...well, anyone. I'm not sure why you think Pena can sustain that production.

November 3, 201312 yr In his primer for the upcoming offseason, MLB.com's Joe Frisaro writes that theMarlins will look to upgrade at catcher and third base, with an eye on getting more power into the lineup. The team's payroll isn't expected to be drastically different from last year's $38MM now that they failed to land big fish Jose Dariel Abreu, but the team will have some flexibility to pursue bargain free agents. Frisaro expects the Marlins to address catcher via trade, as they're no longer sure that Rob Brantly is their future at the position. At third base, he thinks that a one-year stopgap is likely, with 2013 first-rounder Colin Moran expected to be ready for the position in 2015. Some candidates for such a deal (and this is my own speculation) would include Wilson Betemit, Casey McGehee (who had a big season in Japan), Mark Reynolds andKevin Youkilis.

I don't know what he can do, but I am certain it's better than what we have, and he's going to be the most affordable improvement offensively.

That .801 was the best mark ever in a season against RHP. His career mark is .673. That is far more likely what we'll get from him. Like erick said, it would be a very marlins like platoon (ie terrible)

November 3, 201312 yr Dumb question but would guys like Barry zito on the marlins or no? Fernandez eovaldi Alvarez zito and ???
November 3, 201312 yr Author Dumb question but would guys like Barry zito on the marlins or no? Fernandez eovaldi Alvarez zito and ??? Sounds like you already know the answer to that.
November 3, 201312 yr Author No thanks on Zito. We've got enough pitchers, we need offense. It's more that Zito is really terrible.
November 4, 201312 yr I was trying to be nice. I just figured. Maybe he'd be cheap. Anywho I would like youkilis on the team. He was mentioned in the movie moneyball. Should get Miguel tejada too based on the same reason,

November 4, 201312 yr Todd Zolecki @ToddZolecki The Phillies will not make qualifying offers to RHP Roy Halladay or C Carlos Ruiz. Ruiz maybe?
November 4, 201312 yr Author I'm worried that all of these 3B options would prevent Zack Cox from reaching his potential for greatness.
November 5, 201312 yr I'm worried that all of these 3B options would prevent Zack Cox from reaching his potential for greatness. Thank god for that. I may root for Zack Cox, but if he's starting third base next season, it means we're in trouble. I mentioned Ruiz a while back, for some reason someone(s) dismissed it immediately, thinking the Phillies were going to never let him go. Don't know why they would think that, because he isn't very good anymore. Anyway, still an upgrade with big time experience with the best rotation in baseball for many years.
November 5, 201312 yr So who will we get? I say qualls, Ruiz, uribe maybe. Bye bye thank god to Pierre.
November 5, 201312 yr After the year he had, I wouldn't mind signing Qualls to another 1 year deal. Put some incentives in there.
