November 22, 201312 yr Also, Dietrich only has a lot of power for a second baseman because he probably shouldn't be playing that position.
November 22, 201312 yr The Rays' front office didn't think that Dietrich was going to be a big time player any time soon when they dealt him for Escobar last winter.
November 23, 201312 yr Dietrich needs to improve his plate discipline is he's ever going to hit over .220. I believe his past suggests he will improve, and he provides much needed power. You still haven't explained why this is true other than the fact that his minor league career numbers are better than what he did in the majors last season. You still haven't explained why my thoughts are garbage. Tell me, oh baseball guru, why will Dietrich suck when next to nothing suggests that?
November 23, 201312 yr He's just nothing special and it's unlikely he ever will be. The Rays' are a brilliant organization, they wouldn't have dealt him so easily if they thought he was going to be a big time player.

They may have if that's what it took to get a 3.3 WAR player they needed that was under 3 more years of control for only $5 Mill per year. And no team wins every trade...
November 23, 201312 yr He's never shown any reason to think he'll be a major contributor though. We were trying to unload Yunel and they knew that, they didn't trade anything they considered too valuable.

November 23, 201312 yr I will be a happy man if Mike Redmond does not have to put Solano or Dietrich's name in the starting lineup on Opening Day 2014.

I have never seen you give any real reason at any point in time, nonetheless "countless" times.

Tell me, oh baseball guru, why will Dietrich suck when next to nothing suggests that? What are you talking about? I've addressed this all countless times. I have never seen you give any real reason at any point in time, nonetheless "countless" times. Countless times I said that he will suck because his walk rate (and strikeout rate) has been terrible over almost all of his professional career, indicating awful plate discipline--which will compromise his power and prevent him from getting on base. He also rates as a poor second baseman due to his lack of range, meaning that he probably shouldn't even be playing that position. Your thoughts are garbage because you haven't constructed a statistically sound argument. You just took a lazy approach and said that Dietrich will improve more or less because his minor league numbers (I presume you are just looking at HR and OPS numbers) are decent. You are not taking into peripherals, which suggests to me that you don't even know what they are. I've said this also countless times already.
November 24, 201312 yr So... This Staunton guy, any word on him? I think he was briefly mentioned in this thread.

November 25, 201312 yr I think the Marlins would be smart to at least listen when teams call about Stanton. I wouldn't deal him though unless they get an offer that they just can't refuse.
November 29, 201312 yr There are already reports that the FO isn't going to approach him with a contract offer until next offseason, which is not what they said earlier in the year.
November 29, 201312 yr Fernandez, Stanton, and Yelich are our future. We need to make sure we lock each one of these studs up long term.
November 29, 201312 yr There are already reports that the FO isn't going to approach him with a contract offer until next offseason, which is not what they said earlier in the year. Sounds eerily similar something I remember hearing from the FO last year. Do they think he'll get cheaper as the years go by or something? I'm beginning to think (using "beginning" very loosely) it's just a stall tactic to keep up fan interest at least until they are forced to ship him off.
December 2, 201312 yr Maybe they want him to complete a season with generally good health. Maybe, but that would make him even pricier.
December 3, 201312 yr Totally pissed off on how the Marlins have completely botched the Stanton negotiation. Could have locked him in yrs earlier to an affordable long term deal, now with the team in dregland after yet another fire sale and a 100 loss season, and Loria being unwilling to spend other than pennies at least this offseason to improve the team, the climate is decidedly unfavorable to even think of approaching Stanton with a long term offer. And for sure the price tag will be so exorbitant after this next season to where trading him will be the only option left, which is truly where Loria wants this all to end up.

I think they're trying to figure out how to justify a trade since they don't want to pay him what he's worth. If he has another sub-par year they can use that as a reason.
