May 24, 201412 yr Stanton has got to be an absolute lock for the home run derby at this point. We should have that to look forward to.
May 24, 201412 yr With Turner pitching tomorrow, it's already time to look forward to Sunday's game. Gallardo might miss the start, rumor has the Brewers calling someone up to make a spot start.

May 24, 201412 yr Hey hey! Ho Ho! Brad Hand has got to go! Hey Hey! Hoo Hoo! ....Please take Mike Dunn too...
May 24, 201412 yr Brad Hand gives 2 runs in 2 innings...grab the pitchforks. Koehler gives up 7 in 5...no one seems to notice.
May 24, 201412 yr Brad Hand gives 2 runs in 2 innings...grab the pitchforks. Koehler gives up 7 in 5...no one seems to notice. Well, Koehler was like a top 10 starting pitcher in MLB going into his start tonight. Maybe that has something to do with it.
May 24, 201412 yr Anyway, Koehler was only a top ten pitcher in MLB if you were only looking at more simplistic stats. Before tonight's game he had the second highest xFIP in the NL, so that should tell you a little bit about how unsustainable his current numbers were. I'm guessing if you look at the discrepancy between xFIP and ERA, Koehler would emerge as the luckiest pitcher in baseball.

May 24, 201412 yr Well, Koehler was like a top 10 starting pitcher in MLB going into his start tonight. Maybe that has something to do with it. And anyone with the least bit of common sense knew it wasnt sustainable.
May 24, 201412 yr Stanton has a 3.1 fWAR and 3.6 rWAR in 49 G. That is on pace for a 10/11 WAR season respectively.
May 24, 201412 yr Brad Hand gives 2 runs in 2 innings...grab the pitchforks. Koehler gives up 7 in 5...no one seems to notice. Hand had been consistently bad Koehler has not. Pitching beyond his numbers means regression, but it doesn't change the fact that he's been good for the most part.
May 24, 201412 yr That may be true, but for this game at least, Koehler's awful start should be on the receiving end of the bashing. The game was already over before Hand got the ball. The win probability index was at about 3% at that point.
May 24, 201412 yr Anyway, Koehler was only a top ten pitcher in MLB if you were only looking at more simplistic stats. Actually his WAR among starters before last night I believe was #9 in MLB. Unless you don't think WAR is a useful stat.
May 24, 201412 yr Actually his WAR among starters before last night I believe was #9 in MLB. Unless you don't think WAR is a useful stat. I know that Rich Waltz and Tommy Hutton make the public feel like WAR is the advanced stat of all advanced stats, but it really isn't an advanced stat at all. It's a results-based number that tells you nothing about how a player is expected to regress. Edit: Fangraphs WAR page is more indicative of a player's actual skill level. I'm assuming that you were talking about BR's WAR page which is entirely based on past results. Koehler isn't nearly as good as his early season results.
May 24, 201412 yr One could argue that a player is only as good as their results I agree Tom Koehler is not an ace. I was more poking fun at the person who suggested we put Koehler's head on the chopping block with Brad Hand.
May 24, 201412 yr Please pick a side. Don't say WAR is stupid and an opinion then use it when it backs up a point you're attempting to make.

I was more poking fun at the person who suggested we put Koehler's head on the chopping block with Brad Hand. Wasnt saying to put his head on a chopping block. Just saying how bizarre it is that the guy who actually got slapped around didn't even warrant a mention. A pitcher could go through 17 starts without giving up a run and thats great, but those 17 starts does not absolve him if he gives up 10 in a losing effort in start #18.
