Where Do We Go From Here?

I don't see how they improve by replacing Stras with Max

They wouldn't improve in that case.

Would they improve much if they lost Zimmermann either?

No.

Of course, this is dependent on the returns they get for those guys too so who knows.

Exactly.

They radically improve because Straus/Zimmerman/Fister turn into a BIG bat they can insert somewhere.

I have to imagine the Cubs and Red Sox would both unload the farms to get Strausburg. Which is exactly what I would do if I were the Nationals, because they need cheap long-term talent immediately. Cubs don't need all 4 of Castro, Baez, Russel, and Alcantara for their middle infield...

Jim Bowden of ESPN and SiriusXM reports that the Marlins "continue to be involved and are closely monitoring" the market for James Shields.

The Marlins have been connected to Shields this winter but reportedly would only go after him full-bore if his price drops enough. The right-hander is seeking a five-year, $125 million contract, though to this point the offers have come in much lower than that. We don't doubt that the Marlins like Shields, but it seems unlikely that they'd win any kind of bidding war if there is one.

sign Shields: make the playoffs

don't sign Shields: don't make the playoffs.

that's how I see it. get the deal done already

Sign Shields now: Way too much money

Sign Shields later: Still a lot but not terrible amount of money

That's how I see it. Be patient already.

It would be such a sweet Marlins like move to literally swoop in and sign Shields just a couple days before pitchers and catchers report .

I'm still not sure his price tag drops low enough though. For all we know it could be dropping now but then in a couple weeks a few teams start getting desperate and move in and suddenly the price could go back up at least on a smaller scale. But again, every day that he goes unsigned means we're still at least in it.

Hey poptart, want to go shopping with me? I'll let you watch me spend money since you seem to just really enjoy seeing green change hands

yeah totally. lemme just call up my friend who has millions upon millions of dollars saved in account whose sole purpose is just to buy things at the mall. I like seeing him spend money too

According to reports, the front office wants Shields but Loria is not sure he wants to pay him.

What a sack of shit.

That's pretty much what I expected. If it's a four year deal at something like $80 million to $85 million I think I'll be fine with it (as long as they don't backload the contract like crazy), but anything at five years and over $100 million and I want no part in it. Shields being paid $20 million+ as he's getting closer and closer to 40 years old scares me a lot.

Although Loria can obviously be cheap, I think this is a matter of us only needing to be in the market on Shields if the price tag makes sense. Doesn't seem like Loria has the financials to be giving him $100 million+, but at $80 million it makes at least a little more sense. I just can't get over how much I hate the idea of giving a 33 year old a four or five year contract. All common sense for me says that Shields hit his four year plateau from 2010 to 2014 and there's a chance that he hits his decline soon and hard.

If the signing wouldn't impede on our ability to sign other key pieces long term (Yelich/Ozuna/Fernandez/Cosart/Alvarez), then fine sign him. But if that money will force Loria to cut budget in other places, than screw Shields and that deal.

If you're willing to go four, why wouldn't you go five?

It's a win-now move. If the contract is terrible in year 5, it's likely because he's regressed by year 4 already.

The current team is good. The division is not good. The local teams also all suck, which gives the Marlins the opportunity to get positive attention from the fanbase again.

It is a perfect time to go for it.

Giving Shields a "bad contract" isn't going to make or break the franchise because the rest of the team is good and locked up at reasonable prices. They could sign Shields and still have one of the lowest payrolls in baseball. This is just cheap.

Jose Fernandez's contract will become an issue after the 2019 season (he'll be a free agent). At four years we get Shields off the books before having to worry about possibly handing him a mammoth deal (although more likely is having to trade him). At the very least four years gives us more flexibility in our future decision making than five years does.

Amazing that we've come so far these last few months that thinking only adding one more guy makes us a serious division winning contender. We've checked off everything on our offseason list and then some. Signed Stanton. Extend Redmond. Improved lineup. Speed. Second baseman. Upgraded third base. Upgraded first base. Power. Bench. Bullpen. Veteran backup outfielder. Starting pitching to account for the loss of Jose. Veteran SP.

Anyways, somebody get Stanton to "convince" Loria on Shields right now.

If Fernandez stays healthy and does what he does, the marlins won't be able to afford him in FA.

This. If Fernandez isn't extended before free agency, he's going to get a mega-deal that will likely be out of the franchise's reach.

A 26-year-old Fernandez entering his contract year healthy would surpass $300 million.

Thus why I said a trade is more likely.

Still, Shields on five years makes it 0% chance of Fernandez being re-signed. At least with the extra $20 million there's a 5% chance instead. I'll take that.
