Marlins hire Mattingly

Featured Replies

It's impossible to know for sure. I would've done it differently, but the point is that the manager who won the World Series had a roster so good/balanced that he barely even had to manage it.

Also, my point is that I don't think this Mattingly hire matters. Whether people like him or not, his success will be dependent on the players the front office brings in.

A lot of managers manage the same way. Their success is dependent on the team the front office puts together for them to manage. For what it's worth, if the Marlins could get a couple of good SP's, I don't see why we can't be the next Royals. We should build our team like the Royals did. BRING IN CHAPMAN!

Managing is much much more than on field decisions.

And they also do a fucking fantastic job of old school scouting for on-field decisions.  Only reason why Hosmer scored because of the advanced scouting used on both Wright's throwing issues and Duda's, something the computers cant tell you.

If anything it shows how you cannot simply rely on just one school and say go fuck yourself other school.

i disagree to an extent. They had a 3-1 game lead with games 6 and 7 going back to KC. They were running on anything and basically rolling the dice (they had a ill advised sb earlier that inning too). I'd be really surprised if that really played that much into it. It was a terrible base running move that was rewarded by mets being the mets

Read Andy McCullough's game recap.

He said specifically they went due to those two factors.

I agree especially once you hit the playoffs. But if you want to win 90 games every year, you better have a real analytrics department

fair enough...didn't see that. so then risk vs reward becomes extremely favorable in that position. Good job KC

Not doubting you need to use the new school metrics.

But you need to also utilize the old school scouting metrics, as you say especially for the playoffs.

Exactly, it wasnt just them saying, oh fuck it lets try to go.  It was more like, Wright and Duda suck at throwing, lets tie this game up.

I told @Admin once Hosmer got that double, that he would be on 3b by the end of Moose's at bat and that he would tie the game up on the at bat after.

The Mets shit defense in all regards cost them that World Series for all intensive purposes.

I like how washington offered bud black like $3.50 to manage for a year. Pretty insulting. We probably could have gotten him.

I don't know how any team can offer any candidate one year to manage, let alone an experienced one.

With that said, if Bud was open to coming here as pitching coach, I don't think the Marlins would have to do too much to convince him financially or in terms of years.

President David Samson, who can only try to joke about the Marlins' instability while enduring six consecutive losing seasons.

"I got a call from an executive of another team asking about our advice on hiring a manager," Samson said. "We're good at it. We do it every year."

LMFAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The thought that managers don't matter really makes me laugh. They can be critical to making the playoffs and then winning it all in the playoffs. Just look at some of the decisions made by Terry Collins

It's not that they are absolutely meaningless. It's just that they mean very little in the grand scheme of things. The fact that Collins even got to the WS was because of his pitching staff.

Take the Marlins for example. If Stanton and Jose can't stay healthy and if Alvarez's arm falls off, does it really matter who are manager is? On the other hand, if Stanton and Fernandez are able to stay on the field for a full year, Hendo does come back healthy and if the FO adds another dependable starter or two, we'll probably be pretty solid and it won't be because of Don Mattingly.

I don't think anyone is saying that a chimp could manage a ML baseball team. What we are saying is that their impact is rather minimal.

Plus, managerial decisions are largely judged on results. Harvey looked terrific in Game 5. There was nothing wrong with Collins sending him out for the ninth inning. If Collins pulled Harvey and Familia blew it, everyone would be saying Collins should have left Harvey in.

It was a judgment call, and I'm sure just about every other manager in baseball would have, at the very least, strongly considered staying with Harvey.

I would've sent him out there also but the fact of the matter is, not every manager would have. And then some may have yanked him after the leadoff walk (What I would have done).

But then if he yanks him and Familia gives up a double or something to Hosmer (which would have been entirely possible considering he blew three saves in the WS alone), everyone would be ripping Collins for yanking Harvey too soon.

That's why I'm saying it's largely based on results and hindsight.

I agree that he would've been ripped no matter what he did, that's not my point. That just proves people are foolish. My point is that the result may have been different depending on the manager.

Having Harvey face the lead off righty was the right move. Having harvey face the lefty after the walk was a bad move. This is regardless of the outcome. A manager should know his ptichers splits and his strengths and weaknesses and manage accordingly.

You can say it's a bad move all you want, and it may have been, but Harvey is one of the best pitchers in baseball. I can pretty much guarantee you that plenty of other managers would have stuck with him.

Changing the subject a little bit, let me ask you this: do you think the Nationals missed the playoffs because of Matt Williams?

No, I do not think they did but I didn't say a manager is ALL that matters, just that he does play a role. If a team misses the playoffs by 1 or 2 games though, I would say a different manager could have made the difference potentially.

Familia is arguably the best closer in the game and is better against lefties than harvey. It was statistically a bad move. Sure it could have turned out great to leave Harvey in, but the odds were skewed towards it not.

I agree that managers matter. I'm always lashing out an Erick when he says that dumb thing about them not mattering.

But to say that hiring a manager is one of the most important things a franchise can do is plainly idiotic. I would respect Loria a lot more if he were firing GMs at the drop of a hat.

Because of this signing does this make you excited for 2016? I'm sorry but regardless of who is managing, brad hand and Mathis simply can't be here
