Marlins sign Wei-Yin Chen

I wonder why we're all cool with giving $80 million to Chen now but weren't willing to give that money to Shields when we actually had a chance of contending last year.

We did offer it to Shields, he took less to play closer to home

marlins will most likely get 2.5 to 3.0 WAR outta chen (even more if that HR # comes down) which is hardly an overpay (per year at least)

Well I expected the contract to be closer to $18 million honestly given the price tag for every pitcher so far. $16 million isn't a damn bargain for a 30 year old pitcher with 4 years experience but in today's market it is definitely not an overpay. Pretty much par for the course now. Like I said, right now the contract is fine and the second year opt out gives the Marlins a chance to get out of the contract past his peak years if he starts hating it here, but it could suck if they don't find a way to trade him and we have Chen on the books at 36 years old making $20 million on an upscale contract.

Yeah we lose our 2nd round pick

Damn, that's the round we've taken Justin Twine, Trevor Williams, Colby Suggs and Brad Hand in recent years. How will we ever live without it? (yes bring up Stanton but the track record is garbage).

no doubt.

I do think the way Chen pitches gives him a greater chance than a lot of other pitchers at 30 over here to maintain good results

Not an overpay so I'm stumped why Chen ran to take it. Was his market bad?

maybe deal is front loaded with the 3rd year opt out for another payday? Not to mentioned we're prob only team to offer 6 years w that vesting

nevermind:  12:26pm: Chen will receive just $6MM this year and $14MM for 2017, tweets Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald. Obviously, that would mean the team could get two prime years of the southpaw at a bargain rate if he opts out  (And the club could also pick up a draft pick via a qualifying offer in that scenario.)

Yeah Marlins style baby!

I bet Dim is wrong.

Chen won't be a Dodger in 2017.

More like 2018.

1. Jose

2. Chen

4. Conley

These are the three guys I expect positive production from this year and they might not even start Conley. Definitely need another pitcher.

5/80, Leake deal done the Marlins way, again the remaining crappy TV deal yrs factored in, and getting a decent lefty at that, better than Leake. Can't complain.

Chris Johnson- we just went from 78 to 77 wins this year. Fucking Marlins

Look at his splits against lefties. He's a great fit.

I will check it out. Guess when I think I can think of bad attitude. He doesn't seem like a fit to be honest. But yes, better than D. Sol.

Career .314 hitter against lefties I believe.
