but it's really strange that Ichiro still need translator after 15 years of mlb career.

Maybe it's for the Spanish he's learned from Ozuna.

I could watch every marlins' game that started by Chen on fox sport taiwan next season, because they broadcasted every orioles' game that started by Chen in the last FOUR YEARS.

Yeah I've heard Ichiro speaks English and Spanish fairly fluently, or at least enough to have a conversation but he prefers speaking to the media through a translator.

I found it kind of rude how some of the social media fans were making fun of Chen for his attempt at English in his short video saying hi to the fans. I'd like to see them say even one word properly in Taiwanese.

Fans on social media stink.

Really. Poor fucking guy. They'll love him next year when they realize he's one of the few pitchers worth a crap in the rotation

Johnny Cueto too 8 years in MLB and still needs a translator

There are people in Miami who were born there and have never lived anywhere else but still don't speak a single word of English. It's not always about where you are, it's about the people with whom you communicate. If I move to Prague tomorrow but I only ever speak with other Americans, I'm not going to suddenly learn Czech. I might, however, start a band called Chubby Czecher and play some Prague rock.

That will be your choice of moving, but if you're going to work at a pro level you must, and plz don't start no band

In the MLB for four years already,I don't think he speaks english poor and I am a Taiwanese, too.

what the hell does this post even say? I can't understand

I disagree with having to learn a new language. A major league player needs to be good at playing baseball regardless of what language they speak. Learning the language at an adult age isn't easy and dedicating too much time to that could take away time from their actual baseball work. It's a hassle that doesn't make them better at their actual jobs.

Learning English as a second language must be difficult too. Weird ass language.

Put a shrimp in the barbey mate!

I love you Song but I'm going to disagree with you on that.  If they were born here that means that they would go to school here and watch TV here in English which means they would have learned to speak English.  All of my family is from Cuba and the ones born here speak normal accent free English.  Even the one's who came here at a young enough age to get some schooling speak English with a slight accent.

It's actually quite the opposite.  I was born here but I grew up in a home where only Spanish was spoken, so I grew up speaking both languages and I am fluent in Spanish.  My kids on the other hand, those little fuckers don't speak a lick of Spanish.  Except for my 11 year old son whom I taught all of the Spanish bad words to and he curses in Spanish like a sailor.

que?

I've lived here in Miami my entire life and I work with the public and I've never ever met someone born in Miami that doesn't speak English. Some people don't speak it properly, but no English? I've never seen it and I find it hard to believe considering English is spoken in school.

I went to Miami Senior High. I feel as if 10% of that school didnt know english.

Only??

I taught in South Florida for five years and had two or three students in each class who were born in Florida and spoke no English beyond general street sign comprehension. It's not abundantly common, but it exists. And it isn't only Spanish. Some of my students spoke Haitian Creole and nothing else. Remember that despite the laws, many immigrant families do not send their kids to school throughout their early lives for a myriad of reasons.

I teach in Florida too.

But I wouldn't be able to contribute to this conversation because I don't allow the children to speak to me so I have no clue what languages they speak.

Only??

Yup absolutely. 10-15%. Im sure. In my defense i was put in smart classes, so everyone spoke emglish in these classes.

Yeah, that's awful. English is such a completely different language from Mandarin or Cantonese. At least with languages like Spanish there are similarities with English.

You are usually pretty easy to understand.
