I hope DD makes the most of this chance and forces Miami to find a spot for him when Dee returns

Considering we'll need some sort of SP upgrade if we're still competitive before trade deadline, I'd imagine if DD continues his early season success he'll be our only trading chip really.

Also, not trashing our SP, but you young guys who are on innings limits and have to imagine a injury here or there happens and we have absolutely no depth outside of our current 5 esp since Cosart is terrible

He has 20 plate appearances.  Christ, some of you guys are too much sometimes.

there is no comparison between Rojas and DD.

i'm talking about throughout his milb and mlb career. He's a light hitting defensive infielder. We already got one of dem

He hit well last year, and there is a 0% chance of me getting into the ridiculous, tired Hechavarria debate again.

they're both guys who hit singles a decent clip for avg and never take a bb. Neither has any power or can steal. Adeiny is the easily the better of the two. It's a fine skillset, but having 2 like that in the lineup couldn't be a worse idea.

Maybe if Bour wasn't being absolutely useless

They both have good power to the gaps and would make a great DP combo.

If that was true, then their Slg %s (2bs, 3bs, hr) would be significantly higher than their avgs

He has yet to hit his stride this year, but it will inevitably happen.

Agree with 100%. He's hitting lots of hard hits & line drives this year just right at people. He's do for some serious BABIP correction in a good way.

Rojas' career OPS is .574.

OPS not WAR

Do you give a shit about OPS?

Or do you evaluate baseball players using the eye test?

Sorry if my comments have come across as rude or disrespectful.  I'm still very upset about the news.

I'll join the club.

Every single time I reject WAR, someone accuses me of hating all advanced metrics.

Not everything is black or white.

OPS is one of the single most useful tools for evaluating the quality of hitters.   It is not particularly useful for Rojas, because, as I noted above (multiple times), not only is his sample size small, but he has never had a consistent starting opportunity.  Therefore, he has never really been able to get into a rhythm and catch a streak.  That is important to take into account.

Also, as much as saberpurists love to talk shit about the eye test, it has its place.  Seeing how different players respond to certain situations is one of the many beauties of the game.  If you're embarrassed to admit that it is a viable measure of the value of a player simply because it's not empirical, you're missing out.

We're at a time where we can use all of these things together to form a rounded view of players on an individual basis.

I understand what you're saying, but to say Rojas is more deserving for additional playing time is a bit hard to evaluate. Dietrich has the same excuses as far as not having a consistent starting role to catch streaks and is the much better player. I will say this, Rojas has some swag to him and a very short swing which I like.

Dietrich has had multiple consistent starting roles over two seasons, and has been fairly unremarkable in each of them.

1. The most games he has played in, in a year is 90. The second most was his rookie year in 2013 with 57. So that's false.

2. He posted a .802 ops during that stretch last year including 10 HR which is far from bad. In fact, it's actually fairly impressive.

3. Rojas has yet to produce a season even close to those numbers. In fact, the year he played his most games (85) he had a .464 ops. .464. Christian yelich has a higher on base percentage than that. Let that sink in for a minute.

In conclusion, you are very wrong.

I think we need to work on your definitions of “consistent starting role” and  “small sample size.”  Otherwise, I'm going to have to continue to repeat myself, which I have no interest in doing.  During the span with Dietrich you mentioned there, he was almost indisputably the worst defensive infielder in baseball, and not just Major League Baseball, but worldwide baseball, as well as Minor League, College, High School, and Little League.  If you want any further clarification on what my stance is, feel free to read the rest of my contributions to the thread.

I think you need to work on your eye test if you think miguel rojas is even worth getting worked up about. Just remember, small sample size is an excuse if you're young and talented. Not when you've been up in the league for multiple seasons. Generally there's a reason a guy has a small sample size and/or doesn't have a consistent starting role on his resume. But I'm sure you're a better talent evaluator than Don Mattingly.

He has no clue how incredibly wrong he is. Nor will he ever. He'll argue that Rojas is more deserving because he got a couple of hits off the Brewers.,

my last post sounds really combative.  My apologies.  Let's just drop it. I think DD has proven himself (via advanced stats) an outstanding option vs RHP.  Some people don't agree.

I can see using an eye test for defense, but for hitting? All of the stats are right there in black and white. Dietrich is leagues and miles ahead of Rojas as a hitter. This is not the least bit debatable.

I'd like to make this about race.

Anyone think so many people are behind this borderline random .244/.334/.445 career hitter because he's white?

I wouldn't say so. He is just a tough player. I think he has potential to be a real star and I'm actually surprised the FO didn't give up on him. I can see where race comes into play. There happen to be lots of thugs in sports but they come in all colors. I mean from Gordon to manziel to that guy on the bengals to Braun. I am behind DD because of his game just like I am for fowler of the Cubs

Wait, Dee Gordon is a thug now?

Just like ray rice and manziel. You break a contract thinking you can get away with it then I (opinion of me only) think you're a thug. You're a thug if you popped in the military and I've seen plenty of them. You violated a contract. PEDS, domestic abuse....and there's proof? Then yes absolutely

I think you should look up the definition of thug.
