Marlins Acquire Fernando Rodney

Featured Replies

This is the kind of trade you have to make at this time of year. It's not like we had anything else to give up anyway. Paddack is a total wild card. Either he'll be good, or he'll flame out once he faces decent hitting. I don't have a problem with it.

Jong never likes anything the fish do it seems, but you kiss his ass every time he posts a story lately.

I'm sort of ambivalent towards this deal. Jong makes some good points though. While I don't really care about any of the talent in the minor league system right now, Paddack is probably one of the only intriguing trade pieces that the Marlins have to offer in an all or nothing run. Having said that, I don't mind losing him, but I don't know if it was wise to swap him for a 39 year old Rodney who has been pretty shitty for most of his career and posted a 4.74 ERA last season. He just seems like he's probably going to turn into a pumpkin despite the amazing start and I'm not even that excited about having him around next year when he'll be 40 and likely pitching like shit.

So losing Paddack is whatever, but I wish they could have packaged him for a starter.

Urbina was 29 when the Marlins acquired him and had a much better performance track record in the preceding seasons than Rodney does. Also, that 2003 team wasn't sorely lacking starting pitching in the way that the 2016 Marlins are. So I think you are making a weak comparison.

This is a bad trade for the Marlins. In theory, I am 100% on board with "going for it." And the more bullpen arms the better. Our rotation, even when pitching well, does not go deep into games. Counting on McGowan or Wittgren all year is silly. But my issue is that we paid a premium for Rodney because he is a closer. We didn't need a closer. There were lesser known, quality relievers without his name recognition or closing experience, including lefties, who would have improved our pen without having to give up such an asset. I'm okay trading Paddack, but he could have landed us an impact starter. The Dodgers gave up far less to acquire Bud Norris. That said, perhaps now we trade Baraclough or Ellington for a starting pitcher? Also, getting Rodney next year at $2M can't be overlooked. I am happy because our team is noticeably better today (and next year) than it was yesterday. But I think we would have been better off dealing for a starter and lesser (preferably lefty) reliever instead. In fairness, let's see what the next move is before we judge, and good or bad, nothing is worse than a passive franchise. So if they screwed up today in an attempt to "go for it," I can live with that.

Polly's practically jacking off to the memory of the rotation

Yeah, everyone seems to be doing the same, but that rotation was no better than the rotation we have this year.

I don't think its fair to classify Rodney's season as just an "amazing start"  No offense on that @el penguino but the season is half over. He's had more than an amazing "start". Also he was solid when he went to the Cubs last year in the second half.

He's been mostly good since 2012 with the exception of his half season with the Mariners last year.

You can't bitch about the fish doing nothing and then bitch when they go for it. Well you can, but its ridiculous. I for one like to see my team making moves to improve the current roster since we're in the race. And YES this improves the current roster. Will it be looked back on as a bad deal? If we don't succeed this year, then maybe. But, you have to go for it when you have the chance and Rodney will provide more to the team in 2016 than Paddack would have in 2016. Not to mention he'll provide more in 2017 as well while Paddack will still be in the minors.

In addition there's a psychological aspect to a move like this, the team sees the front office trying.

That's total bullshit. 3.90 ERA vs 4.20 ERA. 3 starters with ERAs under 4.00 vs. 2. And 0 starters with 5.00 ERAs vs. 2.

Nothing wrong with going for it, especially with a shitty farm system, but I'd rather see the intriguing pieces used on getting another SP.

Yeah I agree 2003's rotation was better than 2016's but I don't think 2003's was the best ever or anything and that's how its being presented almost.

Nobody said it was the best ever, but it could more than hold its own in the playoffs. 2016's is not playoff caliber.

Erick is dead wrong with that statement.

The only consistent thing about it was Beckett.

Pavano and Penny were pretty mediocre. Dontrelle was good but then sucked in the playoffs if I remember correctly, and we got really lucky that Mark Redman had the year of his life which was completely unpredictable.

Basically, if Wei-Yin Chen could return to form and we add another decent SP, it's basically the same shit. It's not that hard to upgrade our #5.

And no disrespect to Beckett who was the best pitcher on that team, but he wishes he could be Jose Fernandez.

This bullpen is also 10x better than that bullpen. We got pretty lucky that year.

They'll get an SP still

I hope so. But I couldn't help put wonder if a package containing Paddack would net a better return than what the Marlins end up getting.

Again, I'm not crying over Paddack but I think that the Marlins should have a different priorities than buying high on Rodney.

You seem to think that they're not going to add another starter. Once they add another starter which they inevitably will, it stacks up with '03, especially considering the much deeper bullpen.

Our starting rotation #'s would be much better if our #5 wasn't complete shit.

This is like saying that our bullpen isn't that good because Narveson, Ege, Breslow, and the other losers we had the beginning of the year make the bullpen ERA worse than it actually is. The primary guys are pretty good.

If you look at our rotation, Jose is dominant, Conley is decent, Chen should be better than a 5 ERA, Koehler is no worse than Pavano that year (4.30 ERA)...it's basically that we haven't gotten the lucky Mark Redman year. Instead, we've had Nicolino, Cosart, and these other fucks pitching like crap. It's not going to be hard to upgrade that situation. They'll add a decent starter. There's still another month left.

Most of the statements you are making here are unfair. The 2016 Marlins aren't in the playoffs yet. They desperately need a Dontrelle Willis. Frankly I don't think the 2003 Marlins make the playoffs without him. That dude was HUGE down the stretch. Arguably more essential than Beckett.

I don't see what Redman exceeding expectations has anything to do with this discussion whatsoever. The dude performed and elevated the quality of the 2003 rotation. End of story.

And it's not like Chen is on the verge of being great. You said it yourself recently that his peripherals aren't promising. Or are you going to retract that statement now?

Sure, Jose is better than Beckett was in 2003, but what's most important was that the 2003 rotation had more arms that would perform on a daily basis and keep the team in the game.

And if this bullpen is 10x better than the 2003 bullpen, why is the team in need of Rodney.

I'm sorry Erick but you aren't at your best with that post.
