You seem to think that they're not going to add another starter. Once they add another starter which they inevitably will, it stacks up with '03, especially considering the much deeper bullpen.

They would need to add someone with a low 3.00s ERA to compete with 2003. And Chen would need to drastically improve. This year he hasn't performed considerably better than the disastrous 5th starter slot.

 

 

Most of the statements you are making here are unfair. The 2016 Marlins aren't in the playoffs yet. They desperately need a Dontrelle Willis. Frankly I don't think the 2003 Marlins make the playoffs without him. That dude was HUGE down the stretch. Arguably more essential than Beckett.

Sure, Jose is better than Beckett was in 2003, but what's most important was that the 2003 rotation had more arms that would perform on a daily basis and keep the team in the game.

As for Rodney, an upgrade is an upgrade. A bullpen has 7 pitchers. The more good ones you have, the better. Less will be required of the SP's with a better pen.

The problem is that much of that is weighted because of Jose being great. What concerns me is that the 2-5 arms are pretty lousy. If you were to rank all of the NL teams's rotations but omit the #1 for each team, the Marlins would likely be near the bottom. It's hard to win a playoff series that way.

Jose is a lock as #1 (Ace).  At #2 we are riding on Conley to deliver.  I like the kid and want him to dominate but he is showing that as a rookie he can make some really bad mistakes at any time in the game.  #3 is Chen.  While I wasn't expecting a major shutdown pitcher, I did expect better numbers from him.  #4 is Mystery Koehler - either he looks like shit or he makes you feel bad for saying he previously looked like shit.  Lately, he has been more shit than good.  #5 is USDA Grade A Pure 100% shit.  

 

It seems like we need a #2 (no, not shit) to take pressure off Conley and slot him down to #3. But who is available and what do we have to get one?

This is basically why I am a bit unhappy. I'm not as bent out of shape as polly is, but I don't think this was a smart deal.

Once we add a starter, our #5 won't be Nicolino/Cosart/Clemens anymore.

 

Jose's #'s will remain throughout the season unless he gets injured, in which case we're fucked and this is all a moot point.

Exactly my point. Look at what it took to get Norris. We can't even match that and it's not even that good

 

 

Ugh, I've always hated Rodney.  It lengthens the bullpen though, can't argue with that.  You can't be stuck having to throw Dustin McGowan out there in a big spot.  Sucks to lose Paddack though, he seemed like the only name to follow for the next few years.  But I'll echo erick that this team needs to make their run now and they see an opportunity.  They need a SP, lengthening the bullpen can help mask that, Royals style.  If Chen doesn't get his shit together they're really hurting though.  They can't win with just Jose and then have it be a coin flip every time Conley and Chen take the mound.

 

In a vacuum I'd say it's not a good deal.  But Paddack is still single-A, and in the circumstances it's a risk they've decided to take. 

 

They clearly feel like they can make the playoffs right now.  So that being said, it's probably a risk worth taking.  Your rotation can shorten up in the postseason, and if you can stack a lot of quality bullpen arms it's tough to beat.  I don't know how they can get another starter but I'd love to see it.
