Especially when it rolled into Feburary and alot of great arms were still on the board.

 

Cobb, Lynn, Hellickson Jason Vargas, Jaime Garcia, Bud Norris, Tyler Clippard.

 

All serviceable MLB arms that could have slid into and made a decent enough rotation with low priced contracts that either expire at seasons end OR have value for the next year.

 

Hellickson (Signed March 17 for a minor league deal)

 

Vargas (Signed Feb 18 for 2 Years 14 Million with a 3rd year option at 8 Million for 2020)

 

Cobb (signed March 22nd for 4 years and 57MM )

 

Jaime Garcia (signed Feb 17th a 1 year deal for 8MM with a option for second year at 10MM or 2MM buyout)

 

Bud Norris (Reliver signed Feb 14th for 1 year 3MM)

 

Tyler Clippard (Reliver signed March 7th for 1.5 Million for 1year)

 

Hypotetically speaking- with Cobb exluded since he signed late for 4 years, he might have held out for more. Going with the same exact contracts they all signed and playing in a pitchers park rather than Washington, Toronto, Citi,and  STL (dimensions brought in recently)

 

Hellickson, Vargas, Garcia, Norris and Clippard would have added

 

$21 million dollars to this years payroll

 

$10 Million or $18 Million to next years depending on if you picked up Garcias option or bought him out

 

$8 Million to 2020 depending on if you picked up Vargas option.

 

The $21 Million dollars could have been spent on this years team as a last hurrah for the guys who desperatly wanted to add pitching and make a run at it (Stanton and Yelich). Heck, if you traded Stanton and reallocuted his salary for this year only into the team you could have had a MLB caliber roster in need of a slugger at the deadline if you desired.

 

Speaking of the deadline.... each of those pitchers have reasonably priced and moveable contracts that two things could have happened, three if your optimistic.

 

1- Buy these players low to sell high at the deadline:

 

Trade each of them for prospects and eat the money associated with them to recieve better prospects, especially truthful if they dumped Stantons salary and they are insistent this is a build.

 

2- Buy these players low and sell at the deadline-

 

Even if teams didnt want to give decent prospects, each of these are moveable deals that could have netted even a flyer at prospects without giving any money... like Dietrich was coming from the Rays, Bour as a rule 5 pick, Miguel Rojas as a filler in the Gordon trade or Braxton Lee when we dumped Hech mid season.

 

3- The rotation would have been better from the begining and could have produced better results. Norris and Clippard in a pen with Ziegler, Barraclough, Wittgren, Strekenrider, and Tazawa would have jumbled the roles up and made such mistakes as Tazawa a mistake you can hide in mop up roles or making sure Ziegler wasn't put in during high leverage situation. Norris and Clippard could have provided a great punch and added value to contracts like Ziegler and Tazawa if we could have manipulated their spots correctly.

 

Assuming Ziegler and Tazawa played the same as now, the end result would have been the same- a DFA for Tazawa and Ziegler losing his closers role and looking for solutions to his hitability problems.

 

Heck, even dumping everything we dumped and adding these guys would have been a smart play for a team desperate for prospects and to replenish the farm. All of them are easily dumpable and valuable contracts.

 

THATS why I'm upset at how the offseason was handled. Because even if they wanted to build and they claim money wasn't an issue, but rather the mess Loria left them, these 5 players could have added 10 prospects to the farm at a cost of nothing but money and if they had exceeded well beyond expectations in this pitchers park, could have netted them players like Adrian Gonzalez, Clint Frazier, Justis Sheffield at the deadline to a true contender.

Yeah, I don’t at all understand why they didn’t sign a few arms you mentioned  after trading everyone....they’d have become easy trade chips at the deadline to further replenish the system.  Yet we did nothing.
