DFA CHEN

Featured Replies

I know they can't force him, but do you really think Chen's reluctance is the reason why he hasn't gotten it yet? I highly doubt that. I feel like it's very likely that he would defer to the strategic decision of the FO and medical staff.

i do.  i doubt he wants to get a 2nd TJ surgery cause he's already had one in his career and i also doubt we'd continue to think that rehab is the best method considering the fact that this is now the 3rd year of this bullshit.

Seriously.  I'm starting a thread for this.  Tired of watching this piece of shit.

Amen.

Exactly. There is no way this one is on the Marlins. This has to be Chen all the way. Absolute insanity that he still gets paid to decline a surgery and suck for the rest of his life. Really irritating.

I'm pretty sure someone posted an article here last year during the season where it was confirmed that Chen didn't want to have the surgery and preferred to continue trying to rehab it on his own despite what the FO and the Marlins' medical staff had advised (which was surgery).

Not to purposely contradict you but the way I remember it was him getting multiple medical opinions and all of them saying surgery wasn't needed. While that's preposterous to all of us on here if multiple doctors told him no surgery then I can't blame the guy for avoiding the surgery. I don't remember anyone either medical or from the team themselves asking him to have the surgery.

Would love to be proven wrong though and I will look this up...

Edit: Multiple articles with what I remembered...

"The Marlins received some encouraging news regarding Wei-Yin Chen, who will not need surgery after being shut down due to a sore left elbow.

Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Neal ElAttrache recently examined Chen in Los Angeles, and a Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) shot was recommended."

"Surgery for the partial tear in the ulnar collateral ligament was ruled out for Chen"

"Wei-Yin Chen got a bit of good news before the end of the regular season on Saturday when it was determined the left-hander will not need surgery this offseason."

"Wei-Yin Chen does not need elbow surgery, sources say. So the Marlins may have dodged a big bullet.

Chen recently saw noted surgeon Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles, and the prognosis is better than some expected. While Chen’s elbow ligament is inflamed, and the issued recurred, the belief now is that Chen will be able to pitch next year.

As has been reported, Chen received a PRP injection to calm down the inflamed area. However, there is also a belief at this time that nothing more drastic is needed."

Just let Chen ride out this year. The Marlins will not DFA him due to the large amount left on his contract and multiple years. Heck, Tazawa is still pitching for us.

Call up a starter and have Chen replace Tazawa in the pen. Maybe he won’t suck as much out of the pen.

I agree, if multiple doctors say "no surgery" then you do not cut in to your body.  As to the pen, does the same problem exist as last year, he needs at least 10-15 minutes to warm up, so unless you know you will use him, you won't want him heated up an inning or two early just to sit him down.  Makes him useless as a lefty specialist, or for many applications.  Plenty of relievers get up and then sit down, but for Chen, this would seem to be an issue on his arm.  So, useless as a starter and not much better in the pen, big contract, no value, just a bad situation all around.

Was Chen this bad at the end of his run in Baltimore? I'm basically asking did we just get unlucky with this guy or were there signs in 2015 that this guy wasn't gonna be useful anymore?

No but, to be fair, he never had great stuff and always allowed a lot of home runs.

  • 3 weeks later...

He either walked the Padres pitcher on 4 pitches with 2 outs or gave up a HR to the Padres pitcher.

Either way, a short terrible outing.

— The Prado deal for $40 million over three years is an unfortunate holdover from the previous regime. There were people in that front office who argued they had to have Prado, as reflected in this misguided deal. “I don’t know how we’re going to win without Prado,” one is recalled as saying. That’s exactly the kind of thinking that gets folks in trouble.
