Ryan Lillie traded to Reds for international pool money

Featured Replies

Is this bonus pool money for the current signing period or future periods?

This year.

I wonder how much IFA money...My guess somewere around 1M.

Anyone knows how much IFA money Cincinnati has left?

That’s great.   Also Baltimore canned their GM so that may have an impact on how they approach their offering

Cincinnati is unable to sign any player for more than $300,000. This will be their second and final year under penalty for spending over their allotment in the 2016-17 signing period.

Top pool at the beginning of 2018 IFA:

$6,025,400: Reds, Marlins, Brewers, Twins, Athletics, Rays

Although Cincinnati is unable to sign any player over $300,000 they can trade their pool money.

If the Marlins can pull this off and sign all three of the Cuban prospects, I will be forced to stop using my #FuckJeter hashtag.

#FuckJeterNoMore ??

I wonder if the Marlins already know the price to sign these guys and are now purposely acquiring more pool money to reach that price.

I'm saying this because of the timing. They already had the 2nd highest amount of pool money and now they're getting more the day after the showcase and dining out with the guys. Almost like a handshake deal was done Friday and Saturday morning the priority became filling the gap in money.

why are u so excited about cuban prospects ? Three bust of the future is all I see

Or could be one superstar and two busts, which would make them worth it.

Bam.

Because there has never been a good Cuban player right?

To collect international prospects wasn't bad at all. Marlins farm system have been ranked bottom, as you know. Whether a quantity or a quality, we have to focus on collecting prospects right now.

The "players signing" always make me happy no matter where they come from, more players more fun.

That's certainly an interesting thought....

Like maybe they said there's a number that would outweigh the higher figure Baltimore can offer since we're Miami?

Still no word on how much money was traded, though.

I don't know if they're allowed to say how much money was traded. Could be wrong.

Your question is probably very likely. Being in Miami and with Baltimore's front office being such a mess right now there probably is a set price that would make them come here. Too many people are still saying Baltimore is a favorite because of the money but it's not like the Marlins aren't offering them good money. And once you're at this point what's half a million less or so? Especially since this isnt their last contract. This is basically a starting point and they're very likely on a path to make much more in future. Bottom line: they don't need to treat this like their one big payday. They can get a deal they're happy with and be in an organization that they wanna play for and don't just have to go with the highest bidder.

Besides all that, has anyone heard of any other teams being considered? It's funny how there's 30 teams but only two are even mentioned. The day of the showcase I wondered why the bottom few teams as far as having pool money would even attend the showcase.

The money figure traded is always disclosed at some point (for example, we knew we got 250K for Cameron Maybin), but it hasn't been announced yet for this deal for whatever reason.

One would have to think they'd get more endorsement or advertising deals down here vs. in Baltimore too, which would push past their higher initial offer.

Due diligence I guess?  Or they go in the (unlikely) event that other teams pass on the player(s), and they'd fall to that team?  Crazier things have happened.

I'd imagine that the lower teams send just 1 or 2 scouts only to create a file on them for future reference (like future trade possibilities) and that they don't send anyone of significance because there's almost zero chance they fall that low to them. The higher ranked teams go all out like the Marlins had Jeter there and took them out to dinner. I'd imagine the Orioles at least tried something like that as well but it's not worth the effort for the lower teams. Also they don't wanna look like they're not at least attempting to get the guys.

What do you have against Cubans?  One is a highly regarded prospect, the other is young but generally well regarded as well and Gaston throws 98 MPH.  Not of that gurantees success, but to say all you see are three busts shows a great deal of bias.  SMH

nothing against cubans, but cuban prospects are somehow rated too high and then they signed a big fat check and they're a bust, there are a few exceptions yes I know i'm being way negative but it also show the FO is desperate to have an elite prospect on board
