Wayyyy too early to make cuts based on minor league options especially when Wittgren had a real chance at making the team. If he was out of options and wasn't gonna make the team you try and trade him at the end of spring, but u at least give him the chance to win a spot first. And yes, for the record, I hate this move. Absolutely feels like a miscalculation though. I can't believe they thought Wittgren was the best guy to DFA. There has to have been something in the works that fell through. Not that that makes this better but it's the only explanation I can believe here as to how this happened.

February 5, 20197 yr Author Typical ignorance, a few people on social media saying they didn't even know who Nick Wittgren was because we have a minor league team. Nick Wittgren isn't a product of the Jeter rebuild. He was on the team since 2016 during those wonderful seasons where we had sell out crowds watching a contending team of superstar players. If you're gonna act like we traded away a bunch of stars before 2018 at least know who was on those teams.

And I guess that’s a better outcome than losing both Galloway and Wittgren. But I’m still unclear on the first paragraph.

February 5, 20197 yr If you're about to trade someone and need roster space you can DFA that person because you know a trade is coming within the next seven days anyways. I get the theory, but that's a really risky way to handle an asset. It's not like he's some low level guy at the end of the roster that you try to throw out there, and try to get what you can for him at the end of the DFA period. I feel like he had more value than that, both on our roster, and in trade value.

When there are guys like Galloway, Wallach, etc., a guy like Wittgren should be way down on the list of guys to DFA for roster space. --- If he were out of options, I'd understand it more, but he also had an option left.
