It doesn't take long, but they sometimes take a day or two to get their affairs in order.
May 1, 20197 yr Author Even if Yelich continued the incredible pace he has put up so far this year (he won't) and plays every game for the Brewers for the remainder of his contract (he's currently injured, so no on that) then the 4 players in the deal would have to put up a WAR of about 2 per year to match his production. According to Fangraphs that is somewhere between a role player and a solid starter. Of course if Brinson continues to play below replacement level then it get a bit harder to match that. Even still it does not seem outlandish that those 4 guys could still match Yelich's production collectively even given his incredible rise to prominence. Especially if one reaches all-star level. In general the problem with how most people judge any trade is they want equality on both ends so that basically means the casual fans now think Brinson has to win the NL MVP with us for the trade to be considered a success. And we know very well that's not how this actually works especially with the Brewers in contending mode now while the Marlins are still in a rebuild.

I didn't expect equality in that trade and I don't care that Yelich won the MVP last seasons and is on pace to repeat again this year - I despised the trade because Yelich was in a very team friendly deal for a team admittedly trying to be frugal while also needing to make positive first impressions and who was traded with the centerpiece of the deal being a guy who's only a couple years younger and was already deemed moveable by the organization that originally drafted him. What I didn't want was a series of rash trades just to clear the books - and that's what this one appeared to be.

He was far from FA and at a low dollar amount, the exact kind of contract they'd want. I fully believe they wanted to keep him. They shouldn't have felt he had to go just cause he didn't want to be there though. There was no rush to trade him, that was a mistake if they settled for the best deal which it certainly seems they did. Yelich is signed through 2022 at very affordable salaries. To think he was a salary dump is wrong. Ozuna was financially based since they knew they couldn't sign him to a new deal. Stanton obviously was financially based. Dee Gordon was based on finances. Yelich was not. I am 100 percent sure. I can't believe there are still some people who think it was.

There was no rush to trade him, that was a mistake if they settled for the best deal which it certainly seems they did. They had plenty of time to trade him since he was far from being a FA - with the rest of the contracts they moved out they could have at least kept a couple proven offensive performers around and see how their other prospects performed to see which positions they needed to address before moving him - if they so chose. "Settling" for the best deal means it was either a rash move - or nobody really wanted him. I'm going with option A.

May 1, 20197 yr I think we can chalk up the rushed Yelich trade to incompetence more than cheapness. Plenty of other examples of them being cheap to point to.

Well, I've heard they were more worried about Yelich being a clubhouse problem than JT so take that as you will though they could very well have been wrong. But I also think that taking more time with JT was directly a result of them realizing they rushed the Yelich trade and this time making sure they held their ground for as long as possible until they got the right return. I don't think it's a coincidence that they Realmuto trade dragged on so long after the way the Yelich trade happened.

Like "Wow you're hitting so well we're gonna send you to this place to give you a bigger boost!"

I think they meant boost HIS development, since he's obviously going backwards playing at the major league level.
