Payroll projections
The success of the 2020 season has raised the excitement level throughout the organization, and there is a desire to keep building on the momentum. The intention is to have a '21 payroll in the neighborhood of $100 million. The Marlins get some payroll relief now that Wei-Yin Chen’s salary is off their books. Although Chen wasn’t with the club in '20, his base salary for the season was $22 million, and Miami was on the hook for most of it. Chen had signed a five-year, $80 million free-agent contract with the Marlins prior to the 2016 season,

The Marlins also are hopeful to have a new local television agreement with FOX Sports Florida finalized before the first of the year. Exact financial terms are still being worked out, but the belief is it would be about $50 million annually for the club. That’s a significant increase from the current deal, which was less than $20 million for 2020.

While @taiwanmarlin will be thrilled I'm skeptical at such a drastic increase. I'm just hoping they're not gonna increase payroll just for the sake of increasing payroll. Still gotta make smart moves and it's been proven time and again that having a top payroll doesn't always translate to success.

Being open and able to add payroll if needed for success is great but that's not the same as just adding payroll to be able to tell people "hey look we're spending money now!"

This is also weird coming off the pandemic ridden 2020 season where you know revenue had to be down. Having Chen come off the books and having a new TV deal will help but attendance is still bad and they still don't have naming rights on the ballpark. I dunno, just seems like a weird time for the Miami Marlins to be thinking of a higher payroll when even the wealthiest MLB teams are already warning fans that 2020 screwed over their revenues and financial projections for 2021.

Answering my own question...

Then again, if currently the 2021 payroll is looking like it's about $50 million and if the team expects the TV deal to give them about $50 million as well, then maybe it's just as simple as them declaring that almost 100% of the TV deal money will be invested directly in payroll.

That works and does make sense so that could be the answer.

(Plus this would be very un-Loria like)

If it's for real then it means JT would be their top priority.

long term BA contract extension and top tier catcher for helping the staff will likely be their top 2 priorities (in terms of $$ spent anyway)

I would still prefer they don't spend a truck ton on some bloated contract to bring back JT (and i don't think they will...but i'd prefer to be able to have payroll flexibility every year going forward)

BA extension should happen regardless, I agree.

Then it comes down to ...

 - Reclaim Realmuto

Or

 - McCann

 - Relievers

 - Better bench guys

 - Maybe another veteran starter just to give guys development time

 

I still want Realmuto back don't get me wrong but the latter would probably be more beneficial long term.

with the pitchers being much closer to being a more completed work - i think even if they strike out on JT spending some significant money on another upper tier catcher would pay dividends and be worth an overpayment (but in the short term unlike the years JT will likely get). 

If the Marlins signed Realmuto he would basically be the only guy on the team with zero playoff experience lol

I'm kind of liking the idea of adding Molina, and Wainwright as the veteran pitcher we need. 

Obviously Chen coming off the books is huge. 

Boxberger would also be a solid option to bring back. 

I don’t think $50 million is that high for the tv deal. I think that ranks even lower than San Diego and Tampa.

Not sold on a guy like McCann. I think Alfaro needs one more chance to put it all together. We’ve seen flashes of what he can do.

Unfortunate realities of being both too early and too late to capitalize on the mega TV deals we saw being put up the last decade or two.

It just didn't make sense to have this kind of payroll in the 2019 and 2020, but even it makes lots of sense to have a $100 million payroll in the 2021 I would only believe in it after it's confirmed by other sources.

A top starting arm, a top end of bullpen arm, and a hitter will add most of the $45 they are away. Arbitration and etc. will do the rest.  That's assuming they plan to go that way
