April 1, 20224 yr Just like I've been saying all along: automatically assuming the Marlins are a fourth-place team in the NL East is silly, and one of the reasons I cited was deGrom's health issues. The Braves, Mets and Phillies all have major question marks just like the Marlins do.

Make your team as best as possible first and then hope for some luck on top of that. But luck alone won't get it done.

Thats the thing. They can withstand one injury even to DeGrom and still be a better team overall than the Marlins right now at least on paper. It might jeopardize their standing for the playoffs or division, but it wont make the Marlins all of a sudden all close to the Mets. There is a significant gap. The Marlins need A LOT to go right to even have a punchers chance, not the least of which is the late innings and Center Field.

If the Marlins are this far off from the Mets, then not even Reynolds would've made them contenders. This division would then be impossible. We'd need Murderers Row

Yeah that's worked real well for the Mets in recent years, not to mention the Phillies who haven't made the playoffs since 2011. The Mets and Phillies have had horrendous front offices. Just because the Marlins' organization has largely sucked doesn't mean everyone else suddenly has been great. Edited April 2, 20224 yr by Valid

I agree and that's why I think it makes that much more bothersome that the Marlins didn't do more after the lockout ended. But my point was that the teams ahead of the Marlins are hardly world-beaters, even with the Marlins' current roster.

But my point was that the teams ahead of the Marlins are hardly world-beaters, even with the Marlins' current roster. it's still their responsibility to try and put their team in the best possible position to succeed. Injuries, fluke disaster seasons, etc are not something you can predict - Ng and Sherman failed this year while the Mets, Phils, and Braves did what teams should do, which is sign FAs to fill gaps, trade when necessary, and field a quality team from Game 1. Ng seems hellbent on relying on injuries across the board from the other NL East teams in order to move up the standings versus just trying to win as many games as possible. I'm not even saying Sherman at this point (as he failed by not increasing payroll - but now there aren't any noteworthy FAs available anyway so that is moot) because Ng has failed to even make a trade using prospects to fill in that glaring hole in CF.
