ESPN has 13 other teams with having a worse offseason than us.  we have a C- grade currently. fascinating.

No one wants to hear it but this is also probably why they think it's OK to not make any big adds. They haven't greatly subtracted from this team. In theory this is still a playoff team and they're just keeping the status quo. So in this way they're not tanking. They can ride out 2024 and "retool" without rebuilding because "well we were a 2023 playoff team so we didn't think we needed to change much." It's a total cop out but those 2023 deadline additions and the playoff berth will allow them to do the "we tried" thing more smoothly than if 2023 was a losing season.

They lost Soler and Sandy both pretty significant subtractions.

to me it seems they’re calling 2024 a wash or mini rebuild year. 

this is a 75 win team as is.

Sandy had surgery and Soler chose to leave. Neither are a case of the Marlins specifically getting rid of them. Sure it's a 75 win team but it's not a publicly admitted tanking or rebuild at all from a PR sense. 

A playoff team can absolutely say they're still competing without making significant additions. 

Absolutely we on here know the difference but I think there will be a heavy reliance on using the 2023 playoff berth as a crutch publicly.

With that said, Bendix is apparently not an idiot. He for sure knows what's really happening here. He knows they need to get better to compete. 

I'm very disappointed in this team now.

It's incredibly pathetic reasoning - we saw how that worked out after 2020 - it was right back to rebuilding years.

The only way you don't try to improve via moves is if you made/won the WS, and you have key guys coming back from injury that you didn't have on your WS team.

I guess they just think we're stupid as fans.

I don't think it has to work, I'm just saying it's the public stance they can take. 

But, if we follow the thought that 2024 will be Bendix' year to transition to make 2025 and beyond better, then no rebuild would be coming and one can see how this could actually work in the long run. 

This is why it would be a retool and not a rebuild and also why they didn't just fire sale everyone away.

I think a lot of us at the end of 2023 did understand that 2024 could be a step backwards but that we could still be overall better moving forward. Hopefully that's what's happening here.

I guess - just frustrating as a fan to see them stand pat after making it, but being demolished in the playoffs.
