Ah you’re right…. 

Just thinking today that even though it feels like this team has done nothing, they can still contend in 2024 but it's gonna take a big trade whether we like it or not. Like the Arraez trade a year ago, maybe even bigger than that, there's ways to add here. If they are still trying to contend, this has to be what they're working on, as it's the only explanation for why nothing has happened in free agency, just based on the natural timing of offseason trades usually taking longer to come together.

Just realized I didn't exactly explain how but trade a starting pitcher for an actual MLB ready bat, preferably at shortstop... maybe trade a valued reliever for roster filling additions... sign a couple fringe free agents as roster filling pieces like they did with Gurriel and Hampson a year ago... sign one addition to the back of the rotation like what was attempted with Cueto a year ago... pray that Bethancourt is better than Stallings was... pray that the starting pitching doesn't fall apart... pray that the bullpen holds up...

Some of that sounds like wishful thinking but I think teams have contended with less than what we have here now. Do it, start the season with that, and then be aggressive in tinkering and adding during the season if needed. 

This is possible... IF it's what Sherman and Bendix want to do. Time will tell.

This team barely contended with Soler last year, and now they don't even have him. Not to mention Sandy being gone, even if he wasn't Cy Sandy in 2023. This current roster has losing record written all over it.

This team loses 90 games with the roster they have currently. 

 

The whispers just grow slightly louder that Luzardo could be moved, which is stupid.  Better hope you get a massive haul, but even then it doesnt bode well for 2024.  Take all the momentum you built in 2023 and toss it out the window.  Smart baseball. 

 

There was a way to both strenghten your farm system and actually build a sustained winner building on what you did in 2023.  Not the door Bruce has taken, but that door required money so naturally this skinflint didnt take that door. 

I don’t know how anyone expects us to contend at all! They got to the playoffs because they set a record for one run wins fueled in part by A LOT of late-inning luck. This team is exactly what we saw in the wild card series. Not. Ready.

I've been seeing Luzardo's name in some trade rumors lately.  If they trade Luzardo, with Sandy already out next season, they are basically pushing on 2024. 

I don't think I have another rebuild in me. If they trade him, my Fish fandom might be coming to an end. I was a Cardinals fan as a youth prior to the Marlins expansion  in 92'.  I might have to join Das.  LOL. Not sure if I can though since I've been so emotionally invested with the Marlins most of my adult life. Maybe I'll just step away from MLB altogether. At least for a while.

It's a shame what MLB has done to this market. After Loria, you would think they would not have approved a sale to Sherman. He's just not wealthy enough.  Especially with Jorge Mas, a local billionaire willing to buy the team. All just to appease media darling (the phony) Jeter.  

All of the excuses are gone. We have a new stadium and a new TV contract but we still have a low payroll.  We're not a small market either.  There's just no excuse for having one of the lowest payrolls any longer.

If one (1) player is traded, it's not a firesale.

It would be dumb to trade Luzardo, absolutely, coming off a playoff appearance and having so many question marks in the rotation right now. Overall depth maybe gets stronger with Bender, Meyer, Rogers all coming back (maybe for Rogers, I don't even know anymore), but likely not enough.

im in agreement to NOT trade Luzardo.  A front line young starting ace is so incredibly valuable. I can't even think of a deal I would be excited about. (realistically) 

farm is crazy thin as well so no help there really (not for a serious offensive piece anyway).  the FA crop was pretty shit though this year too outside some guys there was zero chance were coming to Miami to play for the Marlins. 

 

I don't know how much value they could get out of someone like Tanner Scott who would be much easier to replace (as bp arms tend to be) than a Luzardo would be. 

 

Oh well...nothing left to do but wait.  I do find it incredibly interesting nobody else has apparently agreed to whatever wild price Soler is demanding. 

Luzardo and Arraez need to be extended this winter if Sherman is even remotely serious about winning anytime soon.

 

Those are pieces you build around.  Not trade.  Trading just proves that all you care about is the dollars and making as much profit as possible.   (and proves me right, though I'd be happy if Sherman surprises and proves me wrong, though I'm not the only one with these thoughts)

Yeah, the problem is the quality pieces to sign to fill trade voids are going off the board too - as happens every year.

We'll gain some "good" by having full seasons of Burger, Bell, etc.....but that'll be offset by no Sandy or Soler.  Beyond that, we've not done anything else - I don't see the other minor pieces he's gotten moving the needle, but who knows - the Rays seem to find people out of nowhere, so maybe it'll work?

It's just not overly encouraging to AGAIN not do anything after a playoff appearance, and instead continue to tread water.
