I would give both these guys passes as I feel they are doing whatever is necessary, ( I do not know, nor does anyone else-just a gut feeling) unlike Chen, who seems to be doing as little as possible and stay within any guidelines of what is necessary or required to keep getting paid. After how many years of doing the same thing with the same negative results will Chen realize that if he wants to be at his best he needs to be doing something else, as long as he is not jeopardizing his health. No one would advocate that.

I commented in the thread about "why so much hate to Jeter", that is was simply stupid and insulting to think fans will show up to see baseball and spend their money if you pipe in a certain type of music. I think he got more of a pass than he should have thinking of the reaction if he had suggested other lures based on racial or ethnic lines to boost attendance. New York is diversity, playing there his whole career makes one wonder why he would make such a ridiculous statement.

While it was stupid and really insulting, Jeter did get a pass when he said that he can get the Latin fans to come to games by playing more Latin music. Imagine if he made similar comments about how to get other ethnic or racial groups to show up. This would have ratcheted up the hate also, and it is unusual coming from someone who played his whole career in a diverse city.

At least Barry mentioned the attendance boosting Latin music part of jeters plan.

I was very interested in the process of who should be traded, what should we get, is the full rebuild the right way, was the slashing necessary (yes, if you believed a $40 mill loss was an annual thing with the core group) now knowing that a large profit was imminent without it. The back and forth discussions as to how much value we were getting back, Astros/cubs did it this way and on and on. Now, everytime we discuss a player moving, it reeks of Jeter saying "well, he didn't want to be here" and knowing that for each major league player moved to bring in a minimum salary player is a move in the right direction for Jeter and his pocket. The lack of incentive of fielding a team of nothing more than minor league quality players at minimum cost is troubling and the consideration of promoting attendance is disingenuous when your bonus is not based on success in the field and that it doesn't matter much if there are 5000 people in the stands or 15,000 when the goal will always be payroll discipline. He promoted nothing more than profits to his potential investors, nothing more. So, it doesn't matter if Castro is moved now or later, he will be moved. Is it the right baseball move? Sure, why not, the team sucks and we can put Billy the Marlin at second and it will not matter, but will you watch this team or go.

I want to wrap myself around the concept that running a sports franchise is about mostly profitability-at least in Jeter's case it is as the bonuses are not tied in to winning but only profitability. Sports franchises are not run like a regular business, you do want profits, but in many cases striving for one makes the other less likely. Project wolverine says a $68 million profit and more to come. So, when the team makes a run and has a shot to pick up an expensive signing (think Verlander for Houston) to push them over the top, hey, that cuts in to the profit and if they miss the playoffs, that is money lost, profits lost and the bottom line, Jeter loses bonus money. Sounds like a conflict.

So, he gets a bonus if the team is profitable-then what were the expectations for the base $5 million? Maybe we give Mike Hill bonuses everytime he doesn't get taken in a deal, or if he actually makes a fair deal, give him a bonus.
