  1. Background: Vargas was a two-way player during a circuitous college career that saw him spend a year each at Louisiana State, Cypress (Calif.) JC and Long Beach State. The Marlins considered taking him in the first round in 2004, but opted for Taylor Tankersley before grabbing Vargas in the second. He's the nephew of former major league infielder Randy Velarde. Strengths: Vargas has good arm strength, working at 91-94 mph with his fastball. His tight slider is a putaway pitch against lefties. His changeup has good downward action at times and could become a plus pitch. He has a strong mound presence, working quickly and going right after hitters. He has sound mechanics and command. Weaknesses: Some scouts wonder if Vargas may wind up as a reliever because he has just one plus pitch against righthanders. Though he has a good physique, there's some concern about potential weight gain in his lower half. He tired near the end of the year after a late promotion to low Class A, but that's typical for first-year players. The Future: Vargas should stay with Tankersley, beginning 2005 back at Greensboro. If he continues to show the progress he made in his pro debut, he'll reach high Class A by season's end. Vargas has been overshadowed at Long Beach State by Jered Weaver, the projected No. 1 pick, but has commanded plenty of interest himself. In fact, his velocity has often topped Weaver's. He has been clocked up to 95 mph, a vast improvement from 2003 at Cypress JC, where his fastball ranged from 86-90. Scouts said Vargas was always capable of throwing harder, but it didn't happen until he took extra measures to tone up his 6-foot, 215-pound frame. Also an accomplished hitter, he was used more in a DH role this spring to conserve his energy. He was hitting .368-5-32 while going 7-6, 4.25 with 81 strikeouts in 97 innings on the mound. Vargas, who spent his freshman year at Louisiana State, doesn't have an especially fast arm, and there are questions whether he profiles better as a reliever or starter because he lacks a dominant second pitch. But he's a lefthander with a mid-90s fastball, and that alone should make him a sandwich pick or high second-rounder. Lets remember that last year was Vargas first full season in the minors(he started at low A ball) and he made it to the majors that same year. I don't see Vargas as a starter but I do feel he can be a damn good reliver. Anybody want to take a look at Tankersley# as a starter last year? yet look at him now

Here's the "TSwift fair trade evaluator." We'd have to part with one of: Type A: Willingham, West, Thompson, Petit One of Type B: Pinto, Volstad, Garcia And one of Type C: Vargas, Retsko, Mildren. I'd do it. Plus, I see no reason to believe that we couldn't resign Alfonso, or that he wouldn't want to stay here. Even factoring in all the money we'd be owing to arby raises, we could still give Soriano his 4/$52 deal and be under the reasonable salary threshold quite comfortably, all while adding a world class player to a team that could use him to be quite possibly one of the scariest team in the league for the duration of his contract. Yes to Pinto, Vargas, Petit but resigning Soriano? ahh... Supposely he wants to sign with a team that will use him at 2B. Also no way 4/52 million for Soriano :thumbdown I wouldn't mind if the Soriano deal expanded to something like this: Soriano Everts Church for G. Hernandez Pinto Petit Pnto

wow... The Washington Post says the Angels, Astros, Twins and Marlins are currently involved in the bidding for Alfonso Soriano. The Marlins? Florida is reportedly willing to part with young pitchers Yusmeiro Petit, Renyel Pinto and Jason Vargas to land Soriano. It would seem to be the height of foolishness on their part, but if it's a serious offer, they can't be completely discounted. The Dodgers and another team or two still could be involved as this one goes right down to the 4 p.m. EDT deadline. I'll glady pull the trigger on that one.
  4. after these last three games there are alot of questions to be answered...do we trade Herges...Borowski....is there any chance we can win the wild card now? It is going to be really tough...I hate to throw in the towel but if we have no intent on keeping these two for next year then perhaps we need to get a CF as we all know and then let the relief corps get all the work they can this season in preparation for next year...we need to start to get very competitive in anticipation of next season.... Man I really hope we trade Joe Borowski (I don't want to lose him the same way we did Todd Jones) . The price for middle relivers has been ridicules so far. I seriously think we can get 2 good prospects for Borowski(although I don't think we can get our future CF) I would keep Herges for the simple fact that I don't think we can get anything good in return (could be wrong look at fricking Mike Stanton).
  5. If the Phillies would settle for a package involing the following players I wouldn't mind. Mildren, Bostick, Zarate, Tyler, Goyen, Barone, Mobley, Young
  6. Seeing as how Mike Stanton brought in Shairon Martis (pretty damn good prospect), Dessens brought in Pimentel and Johnson(two good prospects) I really wish Bienfest would trade Borowski 1) He won't be back next season 2) If we don't trade him, we won't get any compensation for him (if you believe other wise see Tood Jones) 3) This is currently a extreme sellers(like no other I have seen before) 4) In jose Garcia, Jason Vargas, Chris Resop I trust Im telling you, the reason Borowski wouldnt be moved is not because they think he is a key cog in the pen, but because of what he is doing for the youngsters note: this isnt taking away anything he has done for the club... he has been great... but eventually he is gonna come up snake eyes, and is going to implode Ramp I agree 100%
  7. I love it because the people who are against this deal are the ones who will be bitchin and moanin if the FO does no moves at the deadline....HOW COULD THEY STAND PAT?!?!?.....JP represents a better option then Cody Ross and Reggie..... You are right, I will be extremely upset if the FO doesn't trade Joe Borowski for 2-3 good prospects before the end of the July 31st trading deadline.
  8. Sellers market. Good trade for Cleveland.
  9. I think it's laughable that you wouldn't trade (quite possibly) a player that has no future in South Florida with all of our stud arms to get someone that can not only legitimately help the club, but also provide an emotional and leadership spark. I believe the Cubs once believed that when they traded Willis at a time where they had: Blasko, Petrick, Brownlie, Prior, Wood, Zambrano, Cruz, Wellemeyer, Sisco, Clanton, Jones, Beltran, Ryu, Hagerty, Lieber More laughable is that this comment came from someone who once said he would trade Taylor Tankersley for Aaron Miles because we have so many pitching prospects ahead of him. Misinformation, anyone? Get your ish straight before you spread the accusations, my man. I never said that in my life. And at this point, when we have a chance to show South Florida that the Marlins are contending and ready to prove that with this move, it's a plus on any scale. He brings the right demeanor, the right attitude and a fresh spark to a team that is on the verge of contention. I guess that not you. http://www.marlinbaseball.com/forums/index...;hl=aaron+miles Dec 7 2005, 1:36 PM Post #3 Tankersley for Miles, I'd do it . I dont' think Tank has a shot at the bigs. He tailed off this year, and with all these arms he won't get a chance. Well of course I'd love to see him develop, but we have a serious overload of pitchers. Of our top 15 or so, he's my least favorite. Your right my apologies Anyways its funny how things change :lol Little late... thanks Passion

  11. actually if we traded for him and he walks in the offseason we could get draft picks then. Just offer him arby, he should be a type B FA. so that is 2 2nds Its not that easy. Since he has had another bad year and is already making 7 million(I believe) he is unlikely to decline arby as the best offers he will likely get as a free agent are 2 year deals worth 8-10 million. Even with his bad play if he goes to arby with the Marlins the arbitrator will likely rule in his favor and award him with atelast 8-9 million dollars for a 1 year deal. How many of you see Loria paying that for Pierre? I for one don't care if he pays that I just don't think Pierre is worth that money Also Type B free agents do not bring in 2 picks, they bring in 1 first/second round pick or maybe even later if the signing team signs higher rated players
  12. No If Florida trades for JP, there is no way they would trade Borowksi. Trading for JP is an undeniable sign that they want to contend this year. Maybe Im alone in this one but I believe we can still contend without Joe Borowski. Also seeing what teams like KC, WAS, and CLE got for their relivers freaks me out as Borowski should go for the same price or for more. Yeah I agree. Tank I believe can step into the closers roll. JoBo has been great, but the price for relievers right now is ridiculous and it would be well worth trading him for some quality prospects. There are players who can step in his place and do a pretty good job. If he were traded it basically means Resop gets more innings and I don't really have a problem with that Joe Borowski can easily be replaced and a 1.39 W.H.I.P tells me he is overrated right now and is more Alfonseca than he is Jones, Benitez. I think we can trade Borowski to a team like the Mets, Brewers, Giants for 2-3 good prospects and if need be (yuck ) trade a Bostick, Tyler, Mobley for Pierre New Team C Olivo 1B Jacobs 2B Uggla SS Ramirez 3b Cabrera LF Ross/Williangham CF Pierre RF Hermida CL Tankersley SU Kensing SU Messenger Lefty Vargas ML Resop ML J. Garcia Long man Moehler/Herges/Fulchino Rotation same as it is now

  14. That's your opinion, and that's fine, I just disagree. I don't want Amezaga starting either - I also like him better as a utility guy. I like the lineup with Ross in CF and Willy in LF better than one with Pierre in CF and Ross or Willy in LF even with the shoddy range defensively. Now if the price is right (someone like Bostick), I don't see a problem with gambling on JP. Just don't overpay for the guy. Sure, he's an upgrade over Abercrombie (who isn't?), but personally I'm not high enough on him to give up Pinto.[/ Im with you
  15. I say no to Pierre and I hope Beinfets trades Joe Borowksi. CL Tank SU Kensing/Messenger SU Kensing/Messenger ML Jason Vargas- Big fan (unfortunately he is the new Kensing on these boards) ML Resop ML J Garcia Mop Up Herges/Fluchino I would like to add Ross > Pierre
  16. Another great trade by KC.
  17. Odalis Perez - R - Royals Royals acquired LHP Odalis Perez, RHP Blake Johnson, RHP Julio Pimentel and cash considerations from the Dodgers for RHP Elmer Dessens. Now this is the kind of gamble the Royals needed to try. If it turns out that Perez is a waste of money over the next year and a half, well, they were just going to spend the cash on the next Reggie Sanders anyway. Alfonso Soriano and Carlos Lee aren't going to Kansas City. In exchange for taking on a portion of Perez's contract and giving up Dessens, the Royals add a couple of more intriguing young arms in Johnson and Pimental. Perez should move into the Royals' rotation, if not immediately then by the second week of August. He's a pretty weak bet for the rest of this year, but he could be the Royals' best pitcher in 2007. Jul. 25 - 3:41 pm et Blake Johnson - S - Royals 2004 second-round pick Blake Johnson was acquired by the Royals from the Dodgers in a four-player deal. Johnson, 21, was 4-5 with a 4.92 ERA, 121 H and 73/19 K/BB in 106 IP for Single-A Vero Beach. His stock is down from the beginning of the year, but he has very good command of average stuff that could improve as he matures. He might develop into a fourth or fifth starter someday. Jul. 25 - 3:36 pm et Julio Pimental - S - Royals Right-hander Julio Pimental was traded from the Dodgers to the Royals in a four-player deal. Pimental, 20, was 3-8 with a 5.69 ERA, 85 H and 77/45 K/BB in 74 1/3 innings for Single-A Vero Beach. Since he was signed as an outfielder, he's still a raw product. However, he has stuff to turn into a quality reliever someday. Jul. 25 - 3:30 pm et Elmer Dessens - R - Dodgers Dodgers acquired RHP Elmer Dessens from the Royals for LHP Odalis Perez, RHP Blake Johnson, RHP Julio Pimentel and cash considerations. The Royals must be inheriting a significant chunk of Perez's contract, because they're also getting two solid prospects here in return for a middle reliever. Dessens, in the first year of a two-year, $3.4 million contract, had a 4.50 ERA in 54 innings for the Royals. He should upgrade the Dodger bullpen, but it's not like he's a huge asset. He had a 3.56 ERA in 65 2/3 innings for the Dodgers last season ROTOWORLD.COM Another great trade by KC :thumbup . p.s If Elmer Dessens got traded for that package, we definately need to trade Joe Borowski
  18. I would love to get a Pelfrey from the Mets along with Miledge, but they can't trade Pelfrey until January I believe it is. I really like Aaron Heilman(think he is underrated) as a starter and would consider a Heilman+Miledge+a prospect like a German Marte. The White Sox offer would probably center around a Brian Anderson and Bradon McCarthy package. I have a strong feeling that Willis is in fact going to be traded before the deadline, btw. I do believe if we get the right package back it is for the better of the team. I think Willis to the Mets makes sense especially now that they are willing to give up Milledge. I don't think that they will have to give up a Heilman or Pelfrey for a deal to work out well for both sides. Milledge and a package of 2/3 of Niese, Gomez, Carp, Evans, Flores I believe will get a done. Me doubts he gets traded this season though.
  19. I would trade Willis to the following teams (rumored to be interested in Willis) for the following packages. Mets Lastings Milledge Jon Niese Mike Carp or Lastings Milledge Carlos Gomez (like his tools and potential, not sure Mets will give both Milledge and him in one trade) Jesus Flores or Nick Evans Me thinks Milledge is not untouchable for w/e reason and the only untouchables in the system are Martinez and Guerra. St. Cards Anthony Reyes Colby Rasmus Bryan Anderson or one of the following (N. Webber, C. Lambert, M. Boggs, Ja. Garcia) Dodgers Matt Kemp Chad Billinsley Sergio Pedroza or one of the following (X. Paul, C. Dunlap, J. Orenduff) or Matt kemp Blake Dewitt Sergio Pedroza or Xavier Paul G. Miller or B. Johnson Dbacks Chris Young Carlos Gonzalez Miguel Montero for Willis + prospect(or instead of prospect Josh Williangham) or Chris Young Miguel Montero Chris Reynolds Scott Hairston for Willis
  20. 1) Sean West 2) Chris Voldstad 3) Brett Sinkbeil 4) Aaron Thompson 5) Gaby Hernandez 6) Jose Garcia 7) Kyle Winters 8) Thomas Hickman 9) Jason Stokes 10) Gaby Sanchez 11) Chris Coghlan 12) Kris Harvey 13) J.T Restko 14) Jacob Marceaux 15) Harvey Garcia 16) Jesus Delgado 17) Paul Mildren 18) Scott Nestor 19) Justin Jacobs 20) Rick Vanden Hurk
  21. I still would love to go after Hunter Pence over Chris Young.... but either those two or Matt Kemp would be just fine with me and besides, Hunter Pence and I were born on the same day/year :mischief Pence is a projected LF Weaknesses: Some scouts wonder if more advanced pitchers will take advantage of Pence?s hitch by pounding him inside. Though he has played primarily center field in the minors, he?s destined for left. He doesn?t get good jumps and reads on fly balls, and his arm is below average. BASEBALLAMERICA.COM How about instead of trading for a CF (overspending for one...like many here want to do) why not move Hanley over to CF? Trade Joe Borowski(and Herges if Texas want him) for Joaquin Arias and Armando Galarraga/Wes Littleton So Hanley moves over to CF either Arias or Andino goes to short (both are in AAA already and young for the level) the loser of Andino/Arias become a UT man or goes to AAA where he can be later traded(some time in the future) to a team like lets say the Reds? Giants? Royals? Jays? Just an idea
  22. I respectfully disagree. Girardi's behavior and the way he conducts himself is an example to all of our players of how they should act in the big leagues. Many of our players have had little experience in the majors. I have NO doubt that every manager has berated a young rookie in front of his team for poor performance...but generally that is done behind closed doors. There is no reason to do it in public, and I think it sends the message that this kind of behavior is OK. Girardi would have NEVER done that to Cabs. Seriously, Girardi spent what seems like an hour respectfully consoling Willis on the bench after he was taken out early a few months ago. But...since Olsen is a rookie, I guess it is OK to berate him in public, right? Well, apparently Cabs thought it was OK too. I'm guessing you didn't like McKeon very much either. Which Marlins player did McKeon show up in public? Uhh... many pitchers on the mound. Many players in the dugout. Many in the press. In 2005, he blamed certain players for trying to get him fired. hroughout his tenure, he questioned the players' efforts. McKeon and has always been known to be a toughass manager. That's why he's been hired for certain situations (as well as fired for certain other situations). I meant physically grab and scream out during a game in front of the whole team. McKeon never did that. I believe in 2004 Mckeon screamed at Nate Bump during a game and mound visit (in a game which Beckett started, at home, game we won, and against the Phillies)
  23. He has his faults (personnel relations), but he's clearly in the upper half of baseball executives. The entire Marlins front office really. Fleming, Jennings, Hill, Meek. I can only hope we can keep them all. I agree 100%
  24. Check Gathright OBP http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/G/J...Gathright.shtml Check Chavez OBP http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/C/Endy-Chavez.shtml Having speed doesn't make you a good leadoff hitter and Taveras doesn't exactly have a good k/bb ratio which would lead you to believe he will ever become a good leadoff hitter. I was in favor of trading for Gathright, because the Marlins have no legitimate CF in the entire organization. If you stop and read what I wrote, you may note that I said his speed would serve him well once he gets his OBP back up. Yes I read what you wrote, but looking at his career k/bb ratio, last years stats and this years stats what leads you to believe that he will have a good OBP? Im sure Eric Reed speed will serve him well also if he could get his on base back up.
  25. Look at his minor league resume, he has the skills to draw walks, with that, everything else will come. http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/T/Willy-Taveras.shtml Not that impressive if you ask me His 3 most recent minor league OBP: .385, .381, .402. He's not going to be a power hitter, but with his speed, he should make a pretty good leadoff man once he gets his OBP up.
