  1. Lieber you non-scout report-reading idiot.
  2. I can understand the initial reasoning, basically the Shaq factor. Miami is very much an event town, and for something to be popular, it needs to have a certain coolness factor. Thing is, it would only be a temporary boost. Eventually the same problems with the ballpark, the weather, the financial terms of the lease etc will still remain. So the flare in attendances would probably die down, and we'd be no better off. I think the key to having a successful baseball team is for the day out at the ball park experience to be so good that people will come, regardless of how the team itself is performing. All of the little details such as parking/transportation, comfortable seating, shielding from heat/rain, great concession stands at good prices, and so on need to be just right. Getting a ballpark that can offer a hassle free guaranteed successful day out is the key.
  3. JP is a free agent at the end of the year, so we'd be giving up prospects for 2 months of him.
  4. Well according to the box score, Gaby DH'd for our GCL team tonight, went hitless but had a couple of walks. I also noticed that Allen Baxter (still on the Marlins 40 man roster) made an appearance. pitching one inning with 2 strikeouts and an unearned run  Yep he isn't on the 40 man according to the Marlins site, http://florida.marlins.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/...an.jsp?c_id=fla

  6. Olsen not the only marlins organization pitcher striking out a lot of guys tonight. If I say anymore i'll be accused of jinxing him
  7. well just in case you havent checked but i must say that there are plaenty of pitchers doing really well in carolina like julianel, tyler, olivera, cave, hutchinson etc. maybe we should bring soemone up or use tehm fora trade becuase if we can close up the pen we wont lose games like we did tonight. think we should trade some for hitter? Funny that you went through a list of AA pitchers we have and missed the best two there currently, Garcia and Mildren. Hutchinson i'm afraid in his two AA starts this year has gotten shelled, which is what happened when he was in AA during the first part of his career. Julianel has been injured and hasnt pitched since early in the season. Tyler may well get a look in September as he is on the 40 man roster, but still walks too many batters to figure as much of a prospect at this stage. Cave is a 26 year old who walks too many batters much like Tyler. Olivera will turn 29 years old in august. So basically of all the guys you mentioned, even combined there is close to zero trade value.
  8. On the subject of Harvey, his OBP has now slipped to an awful .298. Next year in the FSL is going to be very tough for him as his one good feature this year (at the plate), his power, is going to suffer due to ballpark factors. I'd say there is a huge question mark over his future at this point, and its going to take a considerable turn around for him to remain a legit prospect next year. I'd say J.T Restko is ahead of him actually as a prospect, and Restko might be getting a slightly raw deal in this thread. He did have an awful start, and then injuries kept him on the DL for a good chunk of time. He has though come back and played pretty well recently. In fact, in July he is hitting .316/.400/.439, fo an OPS of .839. His plate discipline is better than Kris Harvey's, and Restko is a year younger, and playing at one level higher in a league tough on hitters and power numbers in particular.
  9. Atlanta traded catcher Max Ramirez, who was rated no.20 in their organization going into the year, for Bob Wickman (Indians). Wickman was having a slightly worse year than Borowski, 1-4, 4.18 era, 15 saves. Less saves, more blown saves, higher WHIP and ERA. And Wickman's remaining salary is approximately $2.1 million, or roughly five times Borowski's. Yep so hopefully the Wickman trade sets a level we can surpass.
  10. Hermy doesnt have anyone really special batting behind him either That's why he should be batting either 2nd or 3rd in our lineup so the big bopers can drive him home. With that high OBP he would have at least 40 runs by now; batting where he is right now he has half that number. Yep I keep looking at the lineup cards each day hoping to see Hermida 3, Cabs 4, Jacobs 5. Since May 22nd, Jacobs is hitting .329/.359/.595 as compared to Hermida at .302/.383/.451 Id rather have the slugger in the 3 hole Yep thats fair, and there is no denying Jacobs has been excellent. I'm just obsessed with OBP, I think its from spending too much time tracking minor leaguers.

  13. Just a quick plug for a site that is incredibly useful for tracking performances in the minors (I am in no way affiliated with the site, its just a really good site). http://www.minorleaguesplits.com/index.html
  14. Probably Jose Garcia or Gaby Hernandez. Then again, maybe someone from AAA, who knows. Gaby will definitely be a September call-up. I don't see how Gaby will definitely be a September call-up, when he hasnt pitched in AA yet. He also isnt even on the 40 man roster yet. Keep in mind too that there has to be spots for pitchers to pitch in before they get called up, so as far as starters go, it will depend on injuries, tiredness etc. Some of the younger guys in the minors (like Gaby Hernandez) may have also pitched a good amount of innings too, and the organization might not want them to pitch on. I'd guess pitcher wise that it'd be guys like Petit, Pinto, and Garcia who may get starts if there are starts to be had. Reliever wise you can pick any of the relievers on our 40 man roster in the minors really. If there was a guy not on the 40 man roster worth the promotion i'd say its Paul Mildren most likely to get the callup. Hitter wise, the usual bunch in AAA might get callups (Aguila, Andino, Reed). I'd actually like to see Stokes come up and get some ABs, not because he deserves them, but just to help in future evaluations regarding his spot on the 40 man roster.
  15. Hopefully they let Petit stay down and get regular starts in till the end of the AAA season. Looks like Vargas will be our long relief guy for a little while at least now, and as I think thats his long term future, i'm happy with that too

The plan should be for Sinkbeil to start at Jupiter in the FSL next year, so the move to Greensboro now makes sense. Its possible he can move even faster than that, with the experience he has at a good level of college ball Beinfest and co won't be scared to be agressive with him. My guess is that Sinkbeil may well get to AA before West, Thompson, Volstad etc. and in a way he should.
  17. Yep official nobody talk about sanchez from here on out warning
  18. K's Biggio anyone think there is a snowballs chance in a fire that the marlins try to sign Daisuke Matsuzaka in the offseason? Who is Daisuke Matsuzaka? Link to his stats wherever he plays? http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_ylt=AofE...o&type=lgns 10-2 with a 2.03 earned-run average, a Japan-best eight complete games and 114 strikeouts in 102 innings He is 25 and was the ace in the WBC for the Japanese team Ooh, we should try to get him.. If he can do as good here as he does there, then we'd have something. Absolutely no chance of us getting him, teams have to pay his Japanese club for the rights, and then sign him. The rights alone will be close to our payroll for this season Will be interesting to watch the bidding war though.
  19. A lot CAN happen between 17 and major league stardom, right. But that's what makes him a prospect. He is a 17 year old dominating the SAL. Take a look back, the lists aren't always right. Todd Van Poppel and Brien Taylor were #1 prospects in the early 90's. Remember Nigel Wilson? Tabata is a prospect as well and they say he has a lot of potential. Thats all it means. Hey, I never claimed the lists are always right. Believe me the Yankees have had more than their share of busts. Even think back to less than 5 years ago with Drew Henson and the DRays savior Josh Hamilton. Where did I say he was going to be a star? I just said he had HUGE potential. Which he does. A 17 year old dominating players that are on average 3 years older than him? That's fantastic. And he has ALL of the tools to be a superstar. That's it. Never did I say he was going to be a star, just that he has all of the tools to be a great one. I think its worth noting that for these reasons BA themselves tend to stick to guys in AAA and AA when putting together their top prospect lists, and rightly so. Judging overall potential is incredibly subjective and not even that meaningful, so looking at players who are performing at the levels that matter in the minors (AA in particular) makes more sense. Jason Stokes' numbers in low A ball were some of the best that level has ever seen. Unfortunately the main numbers that followed him into AA and AAA ball were his lack of walks, abundance of strikeouts, and injury proneness. So really, any prospect who has yet to hit AA should have a giant asterisk on them, and I wouldnt put any of them in a top 50 list, no matter how much hype they have. Bad K/BB ratios and bad K/AB ratios need to be heavily examined when evalutating the lower levels of the minors. You also need to heavily account for that prospects ability to hit breaking pitches, as they become more and more abundant at the higher levels of the minors. Yes, absolutely. Thing is though that it still isnt an exact science every year guys will confound predictions both positive and negative, and nobody can predict injuries, body type changes, personal habits etc. So assigning tangible value to A Ball prospects will always be dodgy at best. Now in your defense as you posted above, all you said was that Tabata had huge potential, and he is certainly doing well at this point. My point would be though that I wouldn't rank him higher on a top prospects list then any player putting up good numbers in AA or AAA, because those guys are proving their potential already, and dealing with stuff Tabata is only currently projected to succeed over. In a year or two Tabata could well be putting up great numbers at AA, at that time he'll then be deserving of a spot at or near the top of a prospect list.
  20. AAHHHHH DIDNT ANYONE NOTICE THAT ITS OLIVO CATCHING DONTRELLE!!! YESS AT LEAST JOE NOTICES OLIVOS OFFENSIVE PRODUCTION Thats certainly one major change, i'm not getting involved in that discussion though I wonder if Messenger will start getting the ball in the 8th instead of Kensing from here on out. Messenger has the best WHIP in our relief core by some ways, pretty much entirely because he is the one guy we have in the pen who doesn't give up a lot of walks.

  22. Well hopefully the market value for relievers keeps going up. This trade should majorly annoy the Mets as it makes their second half schedule tougher, and hopefully encourage Minaya to overreact and make a bad long term move.

shouldnt be long now before Trevor is knocking on that door for the big club I'm hopeful but its far from certain. Hutchinson struggled making the jump to AA last time around; next to going to the majors the AA jump is the hardest one a player has to make. So if he manages to pitch well in AA it'll be the first time he has done so in his career. I'd also say Paul Mildren looks the most likely guy in AA to make the jump next, although it'll probably be to AAA first.
  24. Could use a game thread? He just hit 9 in the first round, did really well, and is in the lead so far
  25. If Olsen goes 5th that means our two lefties are going back to back, and that'd be the one thing I wouldn't agree with. Thing is though with rest days, possible promotions/demotions (as others have touched on above), the chances that this rotation order lasts more than a few weeks is doubtful anyway.
