WOOHOO!!!! Finally some people who have seen the light. Another aspect to having a top 10 pick that i believe "thenewzo" aluded to is, you actually KNOW that if you scout the top 10 players available,,,,you're going to get one of them. If you're picking number 22 you have SOME idea who's going to be available and you have to spread your INTENSIVE scouting amongst a much broader group, and you in turn don't get the detailed info you can when there's a group of 10 guys. Obviously you scout HUNDREDS of players in person, and THOUSANDS at least with cursory statistical analysis and cross-checking scouts. However when it comes to the GM actually going out and seeing a kid in person, he can't do that for 22 possible options nearly as thoroughly as he can for 7-10 options.

I am just saying that to glorify picking a few spots higher is ridiculous. As someone mentioned, this is baseball...not football or basketball. :banghead ARRRRRRRRRGH THAT"S MY WHOLE POINT!!!!!! It's NOT just a FEW spots. We can move FIFTEEN spots in the first round over a course of 14 days. THAT"S INSANE This IS significant, and i'm sorry if you think i'm crazy for UNDERSTANDING that.

Unless you're picking 1-5, there's little to no difference between 10-20. Besides, we were able to get Hermida in the middle of the first round, and Johnson and Olsen on the second day. Hermida was the number 11 pick, and it was a surprise he went that low. Quote from article on sleepers from 2002 draft "First round At least one team considered lefthander Cole Hamels the single best pitcher in the draft. Yet because he broke the humerus bone in his pitching arm as a high school sophomore–evoking images of Tom Browning, Dave Dravecky and Tony Saunders–clubs were wary of the medical risk. Undeterred, the Phillies took Hamels 17th. Likewise, the consensus was that Jeremy Hermida was the purest hitter available and perhaps the best high school bat since Eric Chavez. At least four of the first eight teams seriously considered Hermida, but he somehow got to the Marlins at No. 11."

"Baseball America and other publications have shown that a HUGE percentage of the STAR players in baseball come from the first two rounds, and mostly the top of the first round. Yes there's always your outliers, like Piazza in the 47th or Willingham in the 25th, however it's a statistical FACT that if you want a star player, he's either an international signee, or a first round draft pick." Willingham is a "star player?" Ummmmmm.....ok. :confused I was making the point that few good players are found outside the first round. Also, i'm not HAPPY we're out of the playoffs, but as long as we are not in the top 8 teams in baseball, it's a huge benefit to be able to slide all the way down to the 23rd best team rather than the number 9 team. Top 5 talent sometimes slides as far as 10-15 (Cameron Maybin in 2005) but they tend not to fall farther than that. It's a great benefit to get into the top 10. It gives us a legit shot at a STAR player in the first round, and even a solid chance at a very good one with our second round pick. The star is Piazza, Willy not so much.

I disagree heartily, especially with your point about how many players are chosen NOT in the first round. Baseball America and other publications have shown that a HUGE percentage of the STAR players in baseball come from the first two rounds, and mostly the top of the first round. Yes there's always your outliers, like Piazza in the 47th or Willingham in the 25th, however it's a statistical FACT that if you want a star player, he's either an international signee, or a first round draft pick. Getting to the 7th spot in the draft is a significant advantage compared to being the 21st pick and still missing the playoffs.

We now have the opportunity to make it into the TOP 10 in the 2007 Draft !!!!!!!! Previously, Drafts had been held in order from worst to first ALTERNATING leagues. Recently they've changed it so that the worst teams pick first regardless of league. With the unusual amount of teams hovering just under .500 this year, the Marlins have the opportunity to improve their draft position CONSIDERABLY. AND yes that's the Cincinatti reds on that list. So Marlins fans, if we lose, it's cool. We'll just get that much more of a headstart on all these teams in the draft. D-train + for Garland? WTF?
A) it obviously doesn't make sense B) i think you misread it. In the beginning of the article it says, the reason to trade a Jon Garland is to make room for Brandon McCarthy. Obviously bringing in Dontrelle does not accomplish that. Secondly, it says someone like a Dontrelle OR another quality player, not AND another.

Dontrelle Willis should never be traded
Idealy,,,, I would want Chris Young of the D'backs. Very nearly ready, and big upside. Would i want two 'projects' like Hermida and Milledge at the same time..... YES How much are the mets salivating at the thought of owning Dontrelle in his possible PRIME. Enough to fork over Mike Pelphrey and Lastings Milledge? If so, done deal. I love Dontrelle more than Buffalo Wings, but we have to know what works for us. Unfortunately, young arms that throw over 200 innings every single year, DON"T HOLD UP. Marlins are not an organization that can afford to LOSE Dontrelle without getting an amazing return. Or maybe he'll buck every trend of young pitchers of the last 20 years and never get hurt. We need a CF and bullpen help. Pelfrey and Thrilledge do not fall within our needs A projected #2 starter and a super-toolsy and young CFer don't fall within our need? Isn't that exactly what we're looking for? Milledge isn't as ready as most were forecasting. Do we really want to have two outfield projects in Hermida and then Milledge?

Fish Out of Water
You think a change in manager is going to make us suddenly a legitimate contender. I think we've had a great year this year. Everybody's stayed pretty healthy, especially the starting pitchers. I don't expect any great additions to payroll in the off-season. The Marlins over-achieved this year. I expect next year their record will be about the same as this year. . Loria will look like a donkey if he loses Girardi. Letting go of a manager that had a part in making this an epic season for the Marlins. It's the biggest story in baseball this year. More so than whoever wins the World Series. No one thinks a change in manager will make us a contender. Simply starting the season over and removing APRIL and May would have made us a contender. We were 11-31, we are now 75-77, by my math that's 64-46 or .582 winning %. that's a better % than every team in the NL not named the Mets, and it's over 110 games, not exactly a small sample size. We are good NOW. We're not losing anyone too crucial. We have the ability to fill a hole or two, perhaps improving our middle relief problems. That's why next year, we think we'll be legit contenders.

Josh Willingham
but I can see him as MAnny Ramirez type, :o thats a hell of a lot to say there. He can produce but only Miggy can live up to Manny ... well I still like the production out of Willingham and I think he would be a perfect fit for 3rd or 5th in the order and not as a cleanup. well its been working I believe he's saying he can be as good as Manny is defensively. Mental lapses aside, Manny does play a good right field for Fenway. He knows the carrums off the wall, he has a strong accurate arm, and he doesn't have to cover a great deal of ground due to the short distance. This is what Willy could be in left field. Offensively there's really no comprarison.

Anibal Sanchez...10 wins?
You guys, when this season was at mid point John Smoltz had said it looked just like those young Braves pitching corpse from back in the day, LOOKS like we are going to live up to that! Pitching Corpse? :lol

Marlins Probables
Can't believe no one has mentioned this but Perez is coming off a 9 inning SHUTOUT. While Josh is coming off his first bad start in a long while. The matchups are still favorable, but that one game is deceiving. EDIT Also, Williams has gone 3-0 over 25 innings in his last 4 starts with just 9 ER's

Florida Marlins in 2007
Nobody will regress? First let me say that i love the fish, and think that many years of victories are ahead of us. However the question was posed, and noone wants to look at it. Ok, who will regress? Olivo is unlikely to put up those numbers again. This is why we should look for a young catcher more in line with the age and talent level of the rest of our young team. Someone who can grow with them. Uggla will likely regress. His season has ben WAYYYYYYYY overperforming what he's likely to do in the future. Josh Johnson is not likely to keep up his 2.87 ERA. WHY NOT? Cause that would put him ahead of all the best active pitchers in baseball (Minimum of 1000 IP, 3000 PA and 100 decisions for career and active leaderboards for rate statistics.) Rank Player (age) ERA Throws 1. Pedro Martinez (33) 2.718 R 2. Greg Maddux (39) 3.015 R 3. Randy Johnson* (41) 3.113 L 4. Roger Clemens (42) 3.122 R 5. John Smoltz (38) 3.257 R 6. Kevin Brown (40) 3.275 R 7. Tim Hudson (29) 3.329 R 8. Curt Schilling (38) 3.401 R 9. Mike Jackson (40) 3.416 R 10. Tom Glavine* (39) 3.444 L 11. Barry Zito* (27) 3.498 L 12. Mike Timlin (39) 3.502 R 13. Matt Morris (30) 3.607 R 14. Mark Buehrle* (26) 3.632 L 15. Mike Mussina (36) 3.641 R 16. Kerry Wood (28) 3.668 R 17. Roy Halladay (28) 3.701 R 18. Kevin Appier (37) 3.738 R 19. Kevin Millwood (30) 3.763 R 20. Andy Pettitte* (33) 3.775 L Wow, i can't believe there's only one 5-year veteran active pitcher with a career ERA under 3.00 That's insane.

Marlins fans, may I introduce you to our next Center Fielder.....
in case anyone was wondering, the player he is talking about is Chris Young how he failed to mention his name is beyond me If you click the link i included MLB.COM it takes you to Chris Youngs page. I was going for the suspense of it all. I'd take him, but would the d-backs trade him? I dont think they would. neither do I. I thought the trade of Green was to get quentin some more PT. I'm not talking about quentin, i'm talking about Chris Young. Number one overall pick Justin Upton is a centerfielder in their minor leagues, obviously they plan on HIM for their future. In the present, they've already talked about putting Quentin there, or keep Byrnes, OR AA Outfielder Carlos Gonzalez (now a RF)

Marlins fans, may I introduce you to our next Center Fielder.....
I (and several others) have suggested that this player be acquired. He's a Centerfielder for a young club. The club has two options younger than him with HIGHER ceilings. He is already getting a chance in the bigs, and has shown glimpses of his crazy 30/30 talent with gold glove defense. CLICK on MLB.COM for his page on MLB.COM Be sure to check his first homerun and his amazing leaping catch D'backs need pitching but have hitters, We have pitching but need a centerfielder....... Make it happen guys!

Could Cabs win the batting title?
Let's see, McCann and Ethier will be big parts of the race if they can catch up in elligibility. Here's the math. Ethier has 44 games left, McCann has 46. If they each avg 4 plate appearances (not at-bats) per game they'll add 176 and 184 to their current totals of 312 and 332. This comes to 488 and 516 and You need 503 plate appearances to qualify at the end of the year or 3.1 per team game played. Therefore, Ethier needs to avg just slightly over 4 plate appearances a game (pretty likely), and McCann needs to as well, since as a catcher, he won't catch EVERY game. And of course they have to keep hitting well.

Super fan
You guys just gave me such a smile. I haven't been field level to a game in a few years ( i've moved ), and i just had some great flashbacks to Elephant man, Mr. Whoop Whoop, and others. My question for you is,,,,Does anyone remember a peanut vender that used to call this..... "Peeeeeeeanuts, Peanuts Heeeeeere, HEY ! WAKE UP I"M SELLIN PEANUTS!!!!!!" Am i remembering a guy from Old Lockhart stadium and spring training with the Yankees, or was he a Joe Robbie Guy? Thanks to anyone who might remember.

TOP 20 Marlins In the Minors
Fun list, but you need to be more specific. Top 20 can mean many things to many people. Is it 2006 Performance? Career to date? Is it Potential? Is it Potential + Likelihood to reach that potential? 2006 Performance Chris Volstad is way down compared to Potential/Likelihood to achieve it. 2006 Performance Campusano is playing WAY over his Potential. (but he still has no power).

Jason Stokes?
I was very surprised at the Split Stats on Stokes. Just to note, his last 4 HR which are over his last 7 games were all against Righties. Where did you get his split stats? They aren't on MILB.com nor Albequerquebaseball.com. thanks in advance!
