Bad News Bear Inc- 08/19/07 Game Thoughts
its not the errors, its not being young, its not the runners being left on...its not the strikeouts, its not the slumps, its not Fredi, its not Willis, its not Olivo... its the fact that we were clearly BETTER last year and we have REGRESSED...we've become worse...THAT is inexcusable...being young and inexperienced and making mistakes is fine...but if we were decent enough in 2006, we have no excuse for being completely incompetent in 2007... THAT is whats frustrating... youth and mistakes are excusable in your first year...not your second when your first year was a relative success... In 2006, we had a healthy Anibal and JJ. That alone makes a huge difference.

8/19 - Giants @ Marlins - 1:05 PM
Uggla needs to learn how to make adjustments at the plate, particularly when he's in a slump. And he's trying to pull every pitch, even outside ones. Pitchers know exactly how to approach him.

Hanley vs. Miguel
Cabrera. If I'm starting a team right now from scratch, Cabrera would be the 2nd player I'd pick. See I would go with Hanley because he brings more to the table (total package) then Cabrera and probably has a longer shelf life. Thier numbers fairly balance themself out, but Hanley plays SS and can hit anywhere from 1st to 5th in lineup. I totally disagree that Hanley has a longer shelf life. Much of his value comes from his speed, whereas most of Cabrera's value comes solely from his bat. Hitting ability is much more durable than running ability. But Hanley's not ballooning up like Cabrera is. Hanley has value from his speed, but his bat produces a ton of value by itself, also. Somebody needs to keep Cabrera from the buffet. Have you seen Cabrera lately? He looks sexy as hell since he had that talk with Ozzie Guillen. I'd hit it.

If Cabrera to 1B next year...
I think we can all come to the conclusion that BroncoBob is not a Miguel Cabrera fan.

Hanley on First Take
If Hanley or Miggy doesn't win MVP, something is wrong with the voting. I don't think there's any doubt that Hanley and Cabrera are the 2 most productive teammates in the NL, perhaps even the majors. After All-Star break: Hanley .382 .420 .722 7 HR 26 RBI OPS 1.142 Cabs: .373 .477 .745 11 HR 25 RBI OPS 1.222 Miggy's strikeout to walk ratio (21/20) has helped him. I'm pretty sure his OPS is tops in the majors in the 2nd half. He was 2nd only to Burrell as of yesterday morning, and Pat's is currently 1.153. Then there's this: NL Leaders: Runs Created (Thru Aug. 14, 2007) Rank Player Team Stats 1 Hanley Ramirez Fla 110 2 Miguel Cabrera Fla 109 3 Prince Fielder Mil 105 4 Matt Holliday Col 104 5 Chase Utley Phi 102 And this: VORP: 1. Hanley Ramirez 69.3 2. Magglio Ordonez 66.1 3. Alex Rodriguez 66.1 4. Miguel Cabrera 65.5 5. Chase Utley 54.5 And Cabs is only player in majors in top 5 in all Triple Crown categories.

Is this the year....
As of now he's projected to hit 40 even. I think he can do it if he doesn't enter a long slump. He has 29 in 115 games (Or, one every 3.9655172413793103448275862068966... games). There are 43 games left. If he plays in every one, 43 / 3.96... = 10.string (round down so string is regardless). 29+10=39 If you'd rather use projected over PA, it's the same deal. 497 / 115 = 4.32... PA per game 43 * 4.32 = 185.string PA's left in the season 497 / 29 = 17.13... PA between HR 185 / 17.13... = 10.string HRs However, Cabrera's hitting more home runs in the 2nd half. He has 11 HRs in 30 games. If he keeps up that torrid pace, he'll eclipse 40.

Very good chance (and without sacrificing that batting average).

State of 1B
What I worry about with Jacobs is good hitters normally know how to work their way out of slumps (i.e. going the other way, just trying to make contact). Jake doesn't seem to have that ability.

Guess Who...
So since Hermida sucks after to sucky months (May and June), why isn't he good after too good months (July and August)? And before you bring up that August isn't over yet and things can change...he only played 7 more games in May then has has so far in August (17 and 10). He has sucked since last season, just since you asked, not just because of the first 2 months of this season. His career OPS is still below 800, and his defense is still bad. Him hitting good is a good thing, and maybe it will work out and he will be this really good player. But as of right now, calling him comparable to first ballot HoFers is crazy. I'd like to see him actually play a whole season and keep up an OPS around or over 850 before I think any of that hype back when was justified Very few players post OPS of .850 at the age of 23. Like, it's super rare. Shutup idiot. To quote myself from a while back: Tony Gwynn at the age of 23: .727 Craig Biggio, 23: .737 Paul O'Neill, 23: 2 major league at bats Ryan Howard, 23: No major league at bats David Ortiz, 23: no hits in 20 ML at bats Travis Hafner, 23: No ML At bats Michael Young, 23: 2 ML At bats Johnny Damon, 23: .723 in 472 At Bats Carlos Delgado, 23: .609 in 91 At bats Matt Holliday, 23: No ML At bats Ryne Sandberg, 23: .667 Moises Alou, 23: 4 hits in 20 ML At bats Jason Bay, 23: No ML At Bats Wow, how scary-good is Cabs, then? OPS: 2004 (age 20-21) .878 2005 (age 21-22) .946 2006 (age 22-23) .998 2007 (age 23-24) 1.024!!!

Two in a row...NICE! Hanley's Magical Mystery Tour continues
Do not bring in Mando. Please.... If Gregg's not available tonight, I'd stay with Tank in the 9th. I'd bring in Lindstrom before Mando. Or anyone else we have. In fact, I can't believe I'm about to say this: BRING IN LEE GARDENER!!! Ahh, I forgot about Lindstrom. As I type, Gregg's warming up.

Game Thoughts- 8/10
"The more you see him do stuff like that, it doesn't surprise you," Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "He's become a good player." biggest understatement of all-time Umm, he was a good player last year. He's become a great player.

Next Home Run King?
I could see Cabs hitting 3k hits and 500 HR's but not really seriously pursuing the overall HR record. He isn't a pure slugger, he is more of an all-around hitter. And there is the only arguement you need. But I will add this part. Even if he were to stay here...Even if we get a new ball park...That new ball park is going to be pitcher friendly. That's what this team is built on, defense and pitching. That's what our minor league system is geared for. There is no way they are going to regear the whole system just to accomodate Miggy. The Marlins won't build a stadium like the sandbox in Philly. It may be a pitcher's park, but it won't be anywhere as large as DS.
-
Next Home Run King?
How many times have we seen a Miggy hit bounce off the teal Monster or caught on the warning track? I hate to say it but I think the only way we'd see Miggy anywhere near the record is by doing it playing in a different ballpark. Call me selfish, but I'd rather him stay here at home. Yeah, last night's homer would have been caught at the Bermuda Triangle at DS. Of course, the best solution is to get Miguel playing in a new stadium with the Marlins.

Request...
I like the Cabs one even more. That was so awesome, anyone have it? You can see World Series highlights here. Too bad they didn't show Miggy's full at-bat.

Who is your favorite marlins player this year?
I still fail to see how choosing a favorite player has anything to do with you knowledge of the game. I agree with you; however, the poll question said "based on performance."
-
Tuesday Specials!
Cabs has some nice protection behind him tonight. :| Seriously, if you're Philadelphia, do you even pitch to Miggy?
-
The race is on!
I'm pulling for Miggy to win it, but if either of them do, I'd be thrilled. I'm still bitter over that Freddy Sanchez guy beating out Cabs last season.
-
What do you want to see the rest of the season?
My money is on Miggy for that because he seems to excel at the end of the year knowing he is arbitration eligable. :| Honestly, Bronco, you say the silliest things sometimes.

Game thoughts 8/4
I just watched the replay of Cabs' homer (I was at the game and didn't get a good look at it), and it's amazing to me how it got so much on a pitch that was that low. Incredible.

Marlins Vs Astros

The 8th Inning
This is really starting to get annoying. Give Miller the 8th please.

Rough day for me
Ramp, Your post got me teary-eyed. I think one of the best ways to cope with the passing of an animal (or anyone else for that matter) is to reminisce about all the good times you had with her. We had to put our dog down about 4 years ago, and we still enjoy talking about all the funny things he used to do.

Cabrera is the NL MVP
Can someone post Cabrera's VORP stat? Ask and you shall receive. Top 5 Position Players (By VORP) 1. Miguel Cabrera - 59.8 2. Hanley Ramirez - 58.5 3. Alex Rodriguez - 57.4 4. Chase Utley - 53.7 5. Magglio Ordonez - 52.8 Thanks Crimson. Wow, Miggy has a higher VORP than A-Rod? :o Do you have to be a member of Baseball Prospectus to get these stats?

Cabrera is the NL MVP
Since the All-Star break Miggy's stats have been unbelievable. G AB R H 2B HR RBI BB K AVG OBP SLG OPS 19 72 14 30 6 8 18 10 12 .417 .494 .833 1.327 besides the OPS, that BB to K ratio stands out to me. I made a comment at the All-Star break that if Cabrera cuts down on the strikeouts, he will bat .350 in the 2nd half. Regarding MVP, I think if 2 players are having similarly great seasons, you give the edge to the player who's on the playoff team (ex: Sammy Sosa beating Mark McGwire in '98). But if Miggy keeps up his torrid pace, and ends up with significantly better overall numbers than the rest of the bunch, he's got to be considered. Voters, however, will most likely pick the best player on a playoff-contender. That being said, Cabrera may not win MVP, but if he keeps it up, he'll be NL Offensive Player of the Year. Can someone post Cabrera's VORP stat? ETA: Who was that annoying girl calling Cabrera's home run last night? I missed the first 4 innings of the game, got home in time to see Cabs in the 5th, and heard her shrieking.
