Thoughts, August 1st
And Dontrelle would have been the '03 Cy Young winner on August 1st. Miggy's production all year, plus his last 3 years tell me he's likely to finish above .330 and probably hit 40 this year. That's MVP worthy. MVP worthy if the Marlins make the playoffs. Or contend, which they won't. But who really stands out in the NL so far this season? Fielder had a great first half, but has cooled off. Utley looked to be a candidate, but is on the DL. Ryan Braun has been amazing, but hasn't played enough games. Reyes? Holliday? Howard? That's what makes this season's MVP race interesting.

So Let's Rant and Rave About the Good Things
With the way the team has been playing lately one thing that always puts a smile on my face is Hanley Ramirez. I'm not the oldest person on this board but I've been a fan of the game for a very long time. Never has there been a player that has gotten me so excited to watch a game than Hanley Ramirez. The kid just makes you smile when you watch him play. The kid dislocates his shoulder and still puts up better numbers than guys who are 100%. He is a freak, bottomline. Last 30 days... So when is the National League Player of the Month announced? Jon, I was thinking the same thing today. I thought Cabrera might have a chance... until I saw Hanley's numbers in July! Incredible.

Fredi Gonzalez is really annoying
The only thing I can say I prefered about Girardi was that he had no issues setting high goals for the team. He said from day one what would constitute a successful season, and it wasn't developing for next year, winning a batting title, or setting a club record for HRs and Runs Scored. He said it was to win the World Series, and I really don't think Fredi sees it that way, nor does he present that to the team. And while in a lot of ways I understand not looking at that as a realistic goal for the team, it really should be. The Mets haven't run away with the division like last season, we have a powerful (if relatively inconsistent) offense and a solid bullpen. Yes we have SP issues, that in part, I think grow out of our poor defense. At the very least we know D-Train is capable of better. Whether or not you think 05 was the "real" Dontrelle, the fact that it happened proved that it can happen. Mostly I think though an attitude of the team's record not mattering leads to crap like we saw in today's game: Hanley just slowing down and stopping to watch a ground ball go right past him into LF (in the 1st I think). I get the fact that his shoulder is hurt, and I'm not asking him to dive on it, but a tleast run at the thing and reach down with your glove. And do we even need to discuss Hermida. Someone needs to get it through to him that he is not that good defensively and that on defense, in the 1st inning, he should not be taking stupid risks diving for a ball he isn't sure he can reach. he turned a single into a triple with that move, which led to us giving up the go ahead run, and the team never recovered. And I think it's naive to think that giving up a run like that in the 1st inning doesn't affect how the team plays. the reason that he tried to dive for it was because it was in the 1st inning and its early in the game so you can afford to give up an extra base hit if you mess up. but this is hermida we're talking about, and he's always gonna mess up, so it bothers that he tries to make gold glove plays that he clearly cannot and won't for a long time. the biggest concern i have though is that i'm really not sure if fredi is good at or even tries at all to make the players understand that those types of things just have to unacceptable. I think Jeremy's ego was boosted by his offensive play on the road and was just trying to make a name for himself by getting on the Top Ten Plays. Big mistake on his part. :|

We Finally Got One Game Thoughts
hanley .342 and miggy .337, cannot get enough of watching these guys hit (and field in hanley's case, sorry miguelito). hermida with quite a ballgame. olivo should never play again (and it has nothing to do with bonds' pop up to the mound that miggy should have caught). the mi-train gets a win without his best stuff, justice! superman soars! I saw that pop-up that Olivo dropped on replay, and Hanley had the best chance to make that play. Cabrera was playing deep short, and Hanley easily beat him to the mound. i saw it too and i thought it was more on the third base side of the mound. i didn't realize miggy was playing that deep but it seems like lately he's had his head in his ass in the field. Couldn't have said it better. How many of those 5 runs in the 4th did that non play of his cost us? Probably all 5. He makes that easy snag and gets just one out (should have been a nice DP) and the Bonds pop up ends the inning. Sometimes I think he just dosen't give his all (usually while I watch in person), sometimes I think he just dosen't have the reaction time a good 3B needs. He has once again proven it is not so much his weight, it's that he is slow and lazy. But MAN that bat. One of the best natural hitters I have seen in quite some time. Maybe the best. On the other hand, Hanley is growing right before our eyes. His D is improving as the year goes on. Every time I even think of how far along his progression would be right now had Perry not retired I have to take a cold shower. And MAN that bat. Second best natural hitter on the team. I didn't see the "non-play," so I don't have a say in that, but I do agree Cabrera's defense has regressed the past week or so. And even though technically that Bonds pop-up is the 3rd baseman's ball, with the shift on, Hanley got a great jump and was in much better position to make the catch. Bronco, Not to harp on your comment, but something occurred to me just now that I needed to add. I did not see the Cabrera "non-play" liner (I turned away for a moment), but after the play, I did see him motion that he didn't see the ball. Can't fault him for that, can you?

Miguel Cabrera
Cabrera (and Hanley for that matter) should be getting more love for MVP. I know his defense has been very inconsistent, but voters don't seem to look at that (See last year's winner). Now that Chase Utley is out for a while, who's left? Prince Fielder? Pujols? Jose Reyes? Granted, the Marlins are not a playoff-contending team, but check out these numbers, considering Prince seems to get the most hype: Cabrera: (Top 5 in all Triple Crown categories) .337 25 HRs, 77 RBIs, .408 OBP, .614 SLG, 1.022 OPS!!! 3rd in batting, 4th in homers, 5th in RBIs, 1st in slugging, 2nd in OPS. Fielder: .283 BA, 30 HRs, 75 RBIs, .373 OBP, .591 SLG, .964 OPS

7/29-Marlins at Giants-4:05 PM-Mitre vs. Morris
Just win.

Nice job douchebags...
Mitre and Gregg, regression to the mean is a bitch. Dontrelle pitched great, I think he bought himself the rest of the year here. Rest of the team is enjoyable, but man oh man, to just continue to shrug your shoulders at this as an organization is frustrating. If, just hypothetically, we come back from this road trip 0-7, and no one loses their job, that's sending the completely wrong signals to the team. It can't be validated. I agree Gregg has regressed, but you can hardly call one bad start from Mitre regression. You may be right, but let's see how Sergio does his next 3 starts.

Scott Olsen
Did anyone notice last night that Olsen had his head down and kept to himself?

Game thoughts
FWIW, here're Hermida's lefty righty splits V LHP: .283/.317.467/.784 (60 AB's) V RHP: .221/.335/.407/.742 (145 AB's). That may be even more bizarre than Hammer's ineffectiveness against lefties, because normally left-handed batters have a greater advantage against righties than right-handers do against lefties.

Game Thoughts 7/20
Real solid effort by the whole team. We should suspend Scotty more often. Oh, and from my vantage point, that ball wasn't catchable. Not to say he wouldn't have caught it, but in the spirit of the rule, I don't think we had Jeffrey Maier out there. I wonder what a felony arrest will do for Scott's results? Perfect game perhaps? :confused :lol

You have got to be kidding me. It almost sounds like a joke, doesn't it? One second the Herald has a headline "Olsen keeps cool" and now this. Absolutely incredible.

Game Thoughts 7/20
The ball was in his mitt, Swifty. Great call by the umps. yep, if you watch it frame by frame, ball would have extremely likely been caught. Still a chance it might have popped out, but it was heading directly for his mitt. great game by roly poly. it's not like he was facing the 1927 yankees but a well pitched game is a well pitched game. Cabrera is on an absolute tear. On his current 10 game hit streak, he has a 1.06 SLG. That's SLG, not OPS. SLG. Again: SLG. 1.06 SLG. :notworthy .412 BAA, .488 OBP, 1.548 OPS, 9 runs, 11 RBIs, 6 HRs, 6 1B, 3 2B, 8BB/5k. jesus I just looked at his lefty splits: .408/.500/.859/1.359 might be the year he finally hits over 40 HRs. I really hope Cabs can keep up the home run power. I remember last season, people were throwing around, "Well, if he wanted to, he could hit 40-45 home runs, but he doesn't want to compromise his average." The power is up, the average has stayed the same. It's a lot of fun to watch. And how close was he to having another 2-homer game last night! If he can keep it up (which is a lot to ask, but with Cabrera, anything's possible), he's got to be considered for MVP. And I still think that shoulder's bothering him. I've noticed him massaging it at the plate the last couple of nights. The man is a beast.

The Catch
video of it? You can see it on floridamarlins.com. What annoyed me about the fan is, yes, it looked as if the outfielder would catch it, but what if he didn't? It would have been a double. If it were in a critical situation with runners on base, I would have been peeved. What would have happened if there was a runner on 3rd with less than 2 out when this happened? I'm assuming the run would score.

Updated: Vick Sentenced to 23 Months
If Vick is found guilty, he will never play in the NFL again, IMO. What team would want him? In fact, the league would be smart to ban him for life.

Game Thoughts 7/20
Olsen looked a lot better. Our 1-3 hitters were a combined 8-14 w/ 8 RBIs. Hopefully this was the turnaround game for Uggla.

Why not try
I don't think Mando deserves a demotion. He's been pretty solid for us, all in all, and he's better served being in a role where he can start an inning, Miller (who, for my money is our best reliever) is just too versatile and capable to waste for a start and finish inning. What I think a lot are forgetting is that we really tried to lose the game in the 7th before Tank and Miller bailed the team out. Swift, He's been at best inconsistent for us so far. His numbers have actually regressed a bit. His ERA is 5.79, up from the 4.67 he had with San Francisco. He has given up more hits (19) than innings pitched (18.2). I do agree he will do better coming in to start an inning, but personally, I prefer Miller in the 8th.
