Pavano
I love Pavano's pitching this year but there is no way he wins Cy Young, with the Big Unit having a great season and Ben Sheets having a great season...with that said I would love to see Pavs win it 523027 Ben Sheets has been terrible since the all-star break.

OMG! i CAN FINALLY DIE HAPPY NOW!!!
Yea I agree but when they don't you don't need people like nc marlin making fun of a guy cause he won't sign! 500225 why are you still causing trouble? nc was "making fun of" enc because enc sucks, not because he took some sort of offense to enc not signing. it was a JOKE. damn, go do some mad libs or something. 500231 ENC SUCKS LMAO!! what a tool 500233 because his stats prove that he doesn't suck, right?? :thumbdown :thumbdown :thumbdown

And look who picked up the win....
I'm still glad he's gone, he SUCKED with us...... But hey, if he helps the Marlins, more power to him. 500188 how many times will you inform us he sucked with the chi sox? seriously do we need you to remind us in every billy koch thread?

Chad Fox might return for the stretch run
Where can I get monthly breakdowns of pitchers stats?

For those worried about Lo Duca leaving...
Altough I cannot promise the return of all of our key players, I can assure you that this organization will do as much as possible to help attain its key free agents, and acquire anyone that can step in and fill a role left behind by someone lost to another franchise. 494433 Best gimmick ever.

Chad Fox might return for the stretch run
I remember Urbina being pretty stable down the stretch, he was shaky in the post-season though. Looper was stable as well up until the final weeks of the season.

Calling All Liberal Marlins fans
this is what...the third Clear Channel ticket promotion? 492091 I'd rather not support Clear Channel in any way, even if it means getting something free from them.

Cro says "Jack blew up 2 arms this season".

6 years? lol you sure we could afford that?

Glad Choi is Gone!
we should, but baseball makes no sense. im confident we'll take out the d-backs, and play good ball against good clubs like atlanta.

Glad Choi is Gone!
We'll regret the trade when we are in rebuilding mode 2 years from now while choi is hitting 35-40 homers a year. 490283 if we win a championship this year, who cares. 490288 :notworthy :thumbup :thumbup And more importantly if we get a new stadium deal funded then who cares 490336 We should think about actually winning a game against a last place team in the second half before we think about championships, much less the playoffs. 490339 the expos arent as bad as you think. they got off to a terrible terrible start but they've been playing pretty good ball as of late. they are 10-6 in the second half i believe.

Craig Kilborn back on ESPN?
Old school Sportscenter is where it's at. I hate most of the newer guys they have....

How does arbitration work?
For example, a fifth year player batting .300 with 30 homeruns will be compared with other similar players. 490298 That's why Brad Penny was traded, because he will compared stats wise with ALL pitchers. Paul Lo Duca is also a fifth year arbitration player. However, the average salary of catchers is lower than starting pitchers, and he may be able to be re-signed for a lower cost. 490316 interesting...

LeBatard is at it again!
What's wrong with you guys who are criticizing the trade looking only at offense? The Marlins are not a rotisserierie baseball team. They need defense to win. Good defense (especially at catcher) keeps the other team from scoring runs, and that helps you win. (repeat after me: having more runs than the other team is good, even if you do it by holding down their scoring instead of taking walks) At some point, you will wake up and realize that defense is impportant, and then see that this trade is a HUGE defensive upgrade at catcher and in the outfield. And the continuous references to OBP are ignorant. A walk improves your OBP, and a player who went 5 (all singles) for 50 with 30 walks would have an OBP of .438. But would he drive in any runs? NO! You can't have a lineup of all OBP guys. You need some combination of power and/or high contact percentage to drive in runs. And since June 1, Choi has had neither! We didn't need another Pierre/Castillo type in the lineup, and we improved with Lo Duca who can do it all at the plate, and Encarnacion, who in the worst slump of his career has done more than Choi since June 1 (and upgrades our defense). So put down the rotisserie baseball books (that only consider offense), mothball your copy of Moneyball (a great book, but you haven' t learned enough baseball yet to understand it) and enjoy this improved team. :marlins 490205 great post. i agree completely. :thumbup

How does arbitration work?
But if a player signs a contract, that should state how much he gets paid. He can't all of a sudden decide that he wants to get a huge raise. 490236 arbitration cases are held after a player's contract is up. for example, a player can't just have an arbitration case 2 years into a 4 year contract. i hope that answers your question.

LeBatard is at it again!
saying choi and lo duca cancel each other out and are even is ridiculous. one of our weak points was hitting with runners in scoring position. i think we helped ourselves a lot by adding lo duca, look at his numbers with RISP. paul lo duca with RISP: .316 AVG 3 HR 38 RBI .461 SLG% .357 OBP hee seop choi with RISP: .234 AVG 5 HR 26 RBI .547 SLG% .407 OBP 489958 youre comparing RISP? have you ever seen a player whose RISP doesnt vary wildly from one year to the next? that stat has almost no statistical significance at all. 489971 it is significant because we've been struggling all year with RISP and we added someone who is batting well over .300 with RISP and subtracting someone who is batting .230 with RISP. don't you get it???? however, choi does have a very very nice slg%

BERARDINO: Walker's snub of deal mystifying
Redman----valdez----wash 489793 no way, redman was probablly our most consistent starter last year and valdez is a mediocre #5.

Our new lineup and defense:
Offense is weakened. LoDuca stinks in the second half. His OPS has dropped over .100 points every second half of his major league career. Encarnacion hits for power and has good speed but rarely makes contact and gets on base to put either to good use. The defense is worse off. Cabrera wasn't solid in left field last year and he's not going to be this year. Conine's ability to read fly balls are wasted at first base. Cabrera's arm is wasted at first base. The rotation is worse off. Losing our second best pitcher this year and one of our four aces. The bullpen hasn't been upgraded. Mota is solid. Damn good, but the bullpen will be worse off covering for a roaming cast of AAAA starters giving us short outings every fifth day out. 484460 way to be optimistic d00der. :thumbdown :thumbdown

Why Walker trade didnt go down
I thinks its good that particular trade didnt go down because i heard Walker is owed 17 million through the end of his contract. Hopefully Encarnacion can get hot and helps us offensively. He plays very good defense. BTW I am a new poster, this seems like a great message board to discuss the Marlins. I look foward to posting here more. 486978 welcome aboard :thumbup
