Marlins and Columbus High School connection
Columbus has always been known for fielding very good high school baseball teams. As of now, they have no player that has made it to the big leagues and is an All-Star. They could have had 2 if it werent for bad talent evaluation. Mike Lowell went to Columbus his freshman year hoping to make the baseball team. He didnt make the final cut and eventually transferred to Coral Gables High and eventually to the Big Leagues and an All-Star. Another player to tryout for the team, Alex Rodriguez, was also cut before making the team. Yes this is the same Alex Rodriguez who plays for the Yankees and is an All-Star. He was told by the head coach that he should try playing ping-pong instead of baseball. Man, were the coaches ever wrong. When Alex made it to the big leagues he sent the head coach a ping pong table by mail. Nice move by Alex =). Jim Hendry, Gm of the Cubs, worked for the Marlins FO under Dombrowski, graduated from Columbus. I went to Columbus for 2 years and heard these stories from teachers there.

Looks like Friday ain't happening...
They should try to play the games on Saturday and Sunday. If they cant play on Saturday for some reason, then play a double header Sunday and make the game up at the end only if it will make a difference in us or the Cubs making the playoffs or not.

Marlins Intro Songs
Alex Gonzalez's songs has changed since last year. His new song is by OScar D' Leon as someone mentioned. I love salsa music and i believe the chorus of that song goes something like "yo no la guanto mas". I loved Alex's old song. It sounded like Los Adolescentes (Adolescents Orquestra) but i dont remember the name of it. Does anyone know the name if last years song?

What woulld the Cubs or Giants
He would pass through waivers only if we reach a trade w/ one of the teams who are on the outside looking or the Wild Card Leaders like the Giants or Cubs. Theres no way that teams Leading the division will pick up anything that can help them since there will be alot of other teams w/ 1st priority to pick up the player and would mess the deal up so that there opponents dont get stronger.

Tomko for theCy Young?
I was thinking the same thing. I was watching the last Cabrera AB and he throw everything away from him, low at the outside edge. Gave him nothing to hit. Tomko pitching great and Beckett complementing him by pitching mediocre again.

Alex question
QUOTE:Ramon Castro was a great hitter in Triple A.....Nuff said... Alex isn't going anywhere. $4 mil won't trim that much off of the payroll. I bet you would've said the same thing when we had a SS named Edgar Renteria and we had Alex Gonzalez at AAA hitting .290. No way could we part w/ Edgar, but guess what we did and we brought up Alex. You'll see that it will happen sooner than later.
-
Alex question
B/c he makes 4 million next year and we need to trim payroll to be able to absorb Lo Ducas and Motas salary for next year plus resign Pavano. Also, we have Josh Wilson at AAA who is one of the best defensive shortstops in the minors and he can hit for a good avarage (has a better than .300 avg while playing in AA and AAA this year)
-
Juan Encarnacion
If he keeps playing like this, its going to be hard to find anyone to take him in the offseason in a trade. As it is, we were the only team in the deadline (reported) that would accept him in a trade. They guy is playing lackadaisical - you could tell he's not giving his 110%. I hope he shapes up or the Marlins ship him out at the end of the season.

No pLayoffs this Year
Last year was great but we cannot expect what happened last year to happen again. I dont think we are playing with that "reckless disregard" that we played w/ last year. We have to not worry about losing and play with more fire. Thats what we lack. Even if (big if) we make the playoffs we arent going too far.
-
Offseason Predictions
-Juan Encarnacion gets traded (makes 5 million next year = too much) -Alex Gonzalez gets traded (We have one of the best defensive shortstops in the minors at AAA, Josh Wilson, who has hit above .300 in both AA and AAA this year) and AG makes 4 million next year -The reason both of the above get traded is that we need the money for the players that we acquired from the Dodgers (Paul LoDuca, Guillermo Mota) and resigning Carl Pavano -The only position thats up in the air is RF which a good candidate is Chris Aguila, who hits for a good average and has a strong arm -Save 3 million by not resigning Armando Benitez

Fox learns more of fate on Monday
MIAMI -- Chad Fox, on the disabled list since April 29, will learn more about his playing future on Monday. Sidelined with inflammation in his right elbow, Fox is aware that he might not pitch again this season, but the veteran -- who made a major contribution in the Marlins' 2003 championship season -- hasn't ruled out pitching in 2005. He will know more on Monday after speaking with orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews. Fox still hasn't resumed baseball activities and has spent the past few months with his family at his home in Spring, Texas. If cleared to begin throwing soon, he said, he will strive to pitch in September, but not if it means risking further injury. "It's hard," he said. "I'm drawing a paycheck from the Florida Marlins and I'm doing nothing. I don't want to speak as if it's over. Obviously, my health is my main issue. I don't want to run myself out there and hurt it again and blow myself out. "There is still numbness and tingling. I'll talk to Dr. Andrews on Monday and get a game plan to see what he wants to do." Having undergone two Tommy John surgeries and a third elbow reconstruction surgery, Fox expects that Andrews will want him to undergo stress tests. "I'm not getting too down or too up," he said. "I'll see what Dr. Andrews has to say." One reason Fox has stayed away is that he has a difficult time watching baseball -- the competitor in him wants to be out there. Already during his stint on the DL, he has tweaked the elbow trying to push too fast. So he's enjoying his time as a father and husband in Texas. The family recently took a camping trip near San Antonio, where he was away from telephones and televisions. He usually follows the Marlins either over the Internet or through newspaper box scores. Fox, who turns 34 in September, feels that he has already dodged three bullets by returning from major arm surgeries. He's hopeful that he will pitch again but is mentally prepared to hang up the glove. Whenever he does retire, Fox said, he envisions remaining in the game as a coach. "I enjoy the game, and I feel I have something to offer," he said of his coaching aspirations. Fox was pleasantly surprised to see the team acquire Paul Lo Duca, Guillermo Mota and Juan Encarnacion from the Dodgers, even though the deal came at the price of giving up Brad Penny and Hee-Seop Choi. "I'm a big Brad Penny fan," he said, "but you have to give something to get something. We probably made the biggest deals out there. To see all the Dodgers gave up." Fox expects that Mota will fill the void in the bullpen left when he went on the disabled list. "He's one of the best setup men in the league," he said. "I think we did well. It will be interesting to see how all the pieces play out. Chemistry was a big part of our team last year. You can't buy that, and you can't trade for that." Check out what i bolded. Doesnt look too good if he still feeling those things. http://florida.marlins.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/...s_fla&fext=.jsp

I still liken Vargas to Bartolo Colon. The FO better keep him a starter. The guy is a stud in the making. I want to see what Tankersley is doing. 498328[/snapback] Read This http://www.marlinbaseball.com/forums/index...showtopic=27308
