Another big win for FAU against the Sun Belt Champs! Go Owls!!
2. This was the right move. Regardless of whether we get a direct hit from Ivan or not, the weather will not be good this weekend and the Marlins can't afford any more rainouts.
3. It was posted in the college football thread, but you are right, it desreves it's own. GO OWLS!
4. The NFL moved the Fins game to Sat. because of Hurricane Ivan. It will be on CBS in the local area. http://nfl.com/news/story/7663156
5. Link I doubt he'll have a big role, but you can never have too many arms. Plus, it's always nice to have an original Marlin back.
6. Gordon and Booker are two players we would have laughed if they were rumored a year ago. Replacing Williams with Ogunleye with Gordon and Booker is a horrible deal for us you know. It might not be the coaches fault but some heads need to roll and take responsibility. t :thumbdown his is obviously not a organization these good players do not want to play for :thumbdown :thumbdown :thumbdown 547052 I actually think that Booker and Gordon for O-gun is a good deal. People underestimate just how good Booker is, and Gordon is certainly better than any back we had on our roster. Getting 2 starters for a player that wasn't going to sign is a good move in my opinion.
7. The hurricane may be gone for game time, but last I checked rain can also kill a baseball game or two. How much rain is expected in the aftermath of Frances? This has the potential to really suck :thumbdown 544477 At this point, they can't afford to lose anymore games. I'm sure if there is rain, they'll wait all night to get the games in.
8. Here's a little bit of information: Link Posted on Wed, Aug. 18, 2004 FLORIDA SPORTS BUZZ Not-so-secret stadium details BARRY JACKSON bjackson@herald.com The Marlins' architects, HOK, are well into the process of producing designs for a retractable-roof stadium. And while they're still top secret, here are a few details: ? Because of the team's desire to build around pitching, the park will have pitcher-friendly dimensions, similar to Pro Player Stadium but without the 434-foot Bermuda Triangle in center field. ? Owner Jeffrey Loria doesn't like PPS' uneven outfield wall, with the scoreboard and clock jutting up. The stadium will have a lower wall that's more traditional. Bleacher seating will be closer to the field. ? Construction, to begin this year, won't start until March at the earliest, with a 2007 opening targeted. Miami-Dade County manager George Burgess said Tuesday, ''My hope . . . and expectation is we will have an agreement . . . in the next two to four weeks.'' The sides are still finalizing several issues, including how to finance the final $30 million if the state doesn't contribute. Even if the stadium deal falls through, team president David Samson says, ``Jeffrey will never sell control of this team to anybody.'' ? The Marlins still like their system's pitching depth even after trading Brad Penny and prospect Bill Murphy as part of the deal for Paul Lo Duca, whom Marlins pitchers love throwing to. GM Admin Beinfest believes Double A right-hander Trevor Hutchinson will be ready to compete for a spot in the rotation in the spring. ''And all five of our starters in [Class A] Jupiter -- Scott Olsen, Logan Kensing, Yorman Bozardo, Henricus Vanden Hurk and Joshua Johnson -- are very good prospects,'' Beinfest said. Olsen, the only lefty in the group, is close to untouchable.
9. if this is true, then i'm lost. we only had money for one more contract, which then would be wesley person so umm, what the hell are we gonna do with our forwards? allen, haslem, butler, wright......fantastic four right there! pshhh but at least we'll have a lot of shooters to make up for it. i like person though, i remember watching him in the 3 point shootout - his stroke is so sick 506171 They can still sign players to minimum contracts, and that's pretty much what the fowards available are worth (Fizer, Nailon, Baxter, Keon Clark, etc.).
10. If this is true, it would be a nive signing. The Heat need shooters and Jones is a great outside shooter.
11. To me, this whole issue is pretty silly. It doesn't effect the quality of my life in any way if gay people want to marry, and I can't imagine it having any impact on anyone elses either. It's only an issue because its an election year and there are certain people that don't want to focus on the real issues.
12. From today's Sun-Sentinel (sorry if it's already posted): Marlins on budget As part of the creative deal that brought Paul Lo Duca, Guillermo Mota and Juan Encarnacion for Brad Penny, Hee Seop Choi and a pitching prospect, the Marlins also received $2 million. Without the compensation, the payroll would have increased $1.7 million through season's end. The Marlins did take on a greater financial commitment for 2005. Encarnacion ($4.45 million) is one of six Marlins signed through next year. Assuming Mike Lowell exercises his $7.5 million player option, the Marlins are on the hook for $26.25 million for those six, including Luis Castillo, Alex Gonzalez, Jeff Conine and Juan Pierre. In addition, they owe a combined $13 million to Mike Hampton and Pudge Rodriguez and will received $2.5 million from the Rockies. Lo Duca, Mota, Josh Beckett, A.J. Burnett, Billy Koch and Matt Perisho are eligible for arbitration after this season. Among the Marlins' free agents: Carl Pavano, Armando Benitez, Mike Redmond, Lenny Harris, Mike Mordecai, Ismael Valdez and Damion Easley. I think the top 2 priorities this offseason will be to keep Pavano and Lo Duca. I think Lo Duca will probably get around what Javy Lopez got from the O's, which was around $6 million per for 3 years. I think that they realize now that 1) they need an experienced catcher and 2) they don't have a starting-caliber catcher on their roster other than Lo Duca. Willingham may one day be ready to handle it, but not yet and probably not next year (I think he should be getting a look at 1st next year). Anyway, something in the range of 3 years, $18-20 million is reasonable for Lo Duca. I think a similar deal with Pavano would be fair. And like some of you said, with $13 million coming off the books in 2006, then backloading is definately an option. I think finding a taker for Carney is another priority (unless he plays so well that he's a bargin at $4.45 mil ) Of the remaining arbitration eligibles, Beckett and Burnett will each probably get an additional million or two. Koch won't be tendered, but can probably be had cheap, same with Perisho. It's probably one or the other with Benitez and Mota (but with Spooney coming back, one may be expendable anyway). The rest is pretty irrelavent. Of course, all of this depends on the stadium, but doesn't everything.
13. i'm glad our bullpen has gotten better, but imo our offense hasn't improved at all. 486873 Lo Duca over Redmond is a huge upgrade.
14. Benitez, Mota, Kotch, Seanez, Perisho. Suddenly the bullpen is a strength.
15. To the Royals for RHP Rudy Seanez http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/transactions/today.html
16. Threads last night and this morning are premeated with the "depression" apparent in the Marlins Dug-Out,? post trade news. Nonsense.? These multi-million dollar pawns wouldn't hesitate to be traded if it meant more money for them. The leaked, then announced, trades were not unanticipated by the players. (And Beckett quickly grabbed Penny's locker.) The perceived "Depression" was because Livan overwhelmed them and the pitching staff gave up 9 runs. Get Real. 486117 Mr. Know-it-all, if you were there and you watched the team before the game started or in the first inning (before the Expos scored) or you bothered to actually read the posts of people who go to games, you realize the malaise, the depression was evident from the moment the game started. To ignore that players have emotional attachments to their comrades, regardless of their pay, regardless of their stature, suggests you've never played or have zero understanding of teamsports or have an ounce of empathy in your body. What Beckett did was predictable and the right thing to do, not for the reason you suggest but because monuments in the lockeroom to dead soldiers are the worst thing you can have. I'm sure Jack was very pleased that Josh stood up and did it as quickly as he did. Anyone who's spent any time in a lockeroom environment knows how important a statement it was. 486129 I don't buy that. The team lost a teammate, it's sad and all, but they are professionals. The Dodgers had just lost a team leader in Lo Duca and they went out and won. The bottom line is I don't remember the last time they have ever hit Livan. For what ever reason, its a bad match up for the Marlins. When they got down 2-0 after the 1st, you knew it would be a long night against Hernandez.
17. First Base is the easist position to stick someone at. Willingham might be perfect there. If we turn around and move Enc and a package for Admin Walker, I'll fall down and worship at Beinfest's feet. Enc, Stokes, and Nunez all strike me as Coors field type guys. 484629 Guys, have you all realized the $ part of the trades. If we get Walker we wont sign Pav, Cabs, etc...where the f would we get the money from??? 484637 That's not necessarily true. Walker is only signed for 1 more year, and the Rockies would most likely be picking up a portion of that.
18. I'll trust Riley's judgement on back up point guards, he finds good ones every year. 471001 House, James, Carter?! 471017 Porter, Alston, Crotty, Gary Grant... House and James have gone on to have decent careers. Hell, even Carter was a good backup in his 1st year or 2. He only began to really suck when he became a starter. All these players were signed at or near the minimum...most have recieved big contracts when they left.
19. I'll trust Riley's judgement on back up point guards, he finds good ones every year.
20. I dont like giving up Butler as much as the next person, but I think people are letting last season's run cloud their judgement. This is a deal that the Heat had to do. You only get one opportunity to make this trade and I admire Riley for having the guts to pull it off. What some people call being desperate, I think is being realistic. For as great as the second half of last season was, this was still a team that struggled on the road against good teams (in fact 0-for the year) and wasn't quite as close to Detroit level as people think. We'll see how it goes, but you've got to be excited if you're a Heat fan.
21. Link Good news.
22. From a business stand point it doesn't make much sense to open the upper level to accommodate an extra 100 or so people when they still had seats available on the lower level. As for a discount, i'm sure the team's position would be that kids are given a discount on the lower level seats but on this night they were sold out and the discount is based on availability. That's not to say, of course, that if you write to the team they won't try to make it up to you in some way.
23. Just because the seats are empty doesn't mean that they aren't sold. The seats were most likely sold to a large group (company or something) and the people did not show up. That sucks when that happens, but i'm sure that they were not ripping you off. They just did not have the seats to sell you.
