According to an industry source, the Marlins and Reds are again discussing a possible deal for reliever John Riedling, a Pompano Beach product. The Reds are looking for outfield help after Austin Kearns broke his arm Monday and could be interested in the Marlins' offer of Nunez.

 

The Marlins looked at Riedling during spring training but opted to deal for Padres reliever Ben Howard instead. Howard is at Triple-A Albuquerque.

 

A right-hander, Riedling posted a 0.87 ERA with three walks and eight strikeouts through his first 10 outings (101/3 innings) and has seemingly put previous shoulder problems behind him.

 

Also making Riedling an attractive match for the Marlins is his affordability. The Reds and Riedling avoided arbitration, agreeing to a one-year, $650,000 deal.

I would hope the Fish would think twice about trading Nunez at this point and use Cordero as their primary trade bait. With Conine available to play first, and Cabs (who takes infield practice there on almost a daily basis) Cordero's veteran status and record might bring a better arm to the Fish than Reidling, an iffy (health-wise) guy at best.

 

(and BTW, I'm still sick that they passed on Reitsma. Grrrrr)

I neither would like to trade Nunez especially since hes the only viable backup to Pierre if anything were to happen to him we would be screwed.

Maybe they'll take Lenny Harris back, so he can end his career there instead of on our bench. Of course that is wishful thinking.

How come you think we passed on Reitsma? I thought we made an offer to the Reds for him but got outbid by the Braves, who may have overpaid.

Jack has to threaten JP with violence to get him to sit out a game. We'd have to bring up Christensen (who is on the DL) or Wathan (a SS playing CF in AAA) or Aguila (probably not ready) as a backup CF.

The Reds are only 1 game out of first and just blew a 9-0 lead. I doubt they'd trade one of their better relievers for a PTBNL at this point of the season.

 

Maybe we can trade one of our lefty relievers as part of the deal - they only have one and he's green and has an ERA of 6.

 

And before anybody beats me up too much on what's the point of trading one reliever for another - we seem to have a few lefties who can handle relief but lefties (like Phelps for example) are often not near as effective against right-handed hitters. I think we need another righty reliever.

Not buying that argument. I think fielder for arm is better idea.

We need another outfield like we need a gun shot in the crotch...we NEED Reidling as our Bullpen is in bad shape.

 

If this trade goes down, I will be one upset Reds fan and it has nothing to do with Nunez...everything to do with the Reds FO.

Sorry, but give Frank a chance before you go out and get a guy who's had a hot start, especially at the expense of Nunez. The bullpen has been amazing for the most part all year, and if they can't keep it up, THEN you go out and get someone. But give 'em a chance.

They brought Gracesqui up for a good reason.

 

They need to see what he can do before making any other decisions. Hopefully we'll see him during the Giants series. It would be nice to get him into a game in an easy situation to help build his confidence...ala Wayne.

one other thing, the Reds bullpen is in shambles right now, the last thing they want to do is lose a quality arm for a player who wont get PT

 

this is mostly speculation and I would think O'Brien would have to be high on something to do a Nunez for Reidling deal

the Reds also have Jacob Cruz and Jason Romano in the OF too.... I think

Damion Easley could also play LF if needed ... I mean if a deal was to take place than im sure one of the bullpen guys would be sent down (Grasequi by default) and an OF'er could be brought up ... Whens is Banks coming back from the injury?

Ask Andy Fox whether he'd rather be here or Montreal this season. No doubt he'd like to be playing every day but there's something to be said for breaking into the bigs with a world champion team rather than playing in Pittsburgh or somebody else trying to stay out of the cellar.

I'll propose it again..Damion Easley to the Yanks for one of their relievers + cash. Gabe White and Felix Heredia (currently on DL) are worth looking at.
