Carlos's Bold Prediction: Hampton WILL BE Delgadowned

Its not our offense getting on Hampton that I'm worried about, its their offense on Leiter. Of course, he could prove me wrong. :whistle

It's been eight years since Al Leiter led the Florida Marlins to its first World Series title.

Shunned by the New York Mets in the offseason, Leiter returned to the Marlins to serve as a mentor to a young, talented staff and will pitch the middle game of their series against the Atlanta Braves.

``This thing has had a good feel to it, right from the start,'' said Marlins general manager Admin Beinfest, who said the team established Leiter as a priority back in August.

The 39-year-old left-hander had spent seven years with the Mets, going 10-8 with a 3.21 ERA last season, but was looking for a new home after the Mets jettisoned him as part of their makeover under new general manager Omar Minaya.

Leiter has had much success pitching at Pro Player Stadium, where he has a 22-9 record with a 2.77 ERA in his career. Now, if Leiter gets the run support Josh Beckett did in Tuesday's opener, he might add another win to that total.

Juan Encarnacion capped a five-run first inning with a grand slam off Braves' starter John Smoltz and Carlos Delgado had four hits in his Florida debut to help beat Atlanta 9-0.

Beckett, starting on opening day for the third year in a row, earned the win for the first time. He allowed two hits in six innings, and three relievers completed a five-hitter.

``We'll take nine runs every day,'' Beckett said. ``I don't think any of our starters will complain about that.''

Atlanta left-hander Mike Hampton will try to pick the team up after Tuesday's debacle, hoping to build on a solid second half of 2004.

Hampton, who was teammates with Leiter on the Mets NL-pennant winning team in 2000, went 11-1 with a 3.02 ERA in his final 14 starts in 2004, after going 2-8 with a 5.55 ERA in his first 15.

Atlanta is hoping for a strong start to the season for the veteran, who in his two years with the Braves, is 9-13 with a 4.99 ERA before the All-Star break and 18-4, 3.00 thereafter.

It will be nice to see Al Lieter back.

Not to jump the gun, but tomorrow (my first game of the year) will have an awesome match up of Hudson vs Burnett.

I had a nightmare that Leiter would totally blow it. But seeing those stats helps. :thumbup

Historically, Leiter does very well against Atlanta.
