Posted April 14, 200519 yr After 9 games, I wonder if anyone has any thoughts/reactions about Delgado. Obviously, its ONLY 9 games, but for a $52 Million investment there has been little talk of him on this board since the season actually started. IMO, other than the first game, I don't really think his impact has been as huge as I thought it would - but what a debut, huh? Unless, of course, people want to attribute Miggy's power numbers to Delgado's presence (which isn't that far fetched). In saying this, I actually think this is positive for the Marlins, because it'll only be a matter of time before Delgado really starts earning his paycheck - and I can only imagine how much better Miggy and Lowell will get as the season progresses. Thoughts? Reactions? Is Delgado exceeding everyone's expectations?
April 14, 200519 yr Delgado's being quiet right now, but that's more of circumstance than anything. His homer came at the right time, and he's gotten extra base hits when needed. Four doubles through 9 games is very good. However, he doesn't have the RBI totals yet, but that is due to lack of people on base in front of him. He has been leading off inning or batting second in an inning many times. Once he comes up with one and two men on consistently, he'll start making alot of noise. Until then I'll take the quiet production.
April 14, 200519 yr I love the fact that our lineup goes lefty-switch-righty-lefty-righty.. forced that lefty to stay in to face cabrera.. its really gonna jack with peoples bullpens down the road. I think he's gonna get much better as the season goes on.. he's still facing pitchers for the first time in his career and there is an adjustment period. I think hes going to have a monster season
April 14, 200519 yr The guy is batting .333 w/ an OBP of .450...looks good to me. He hasn't really wowed us, but his presence in the lineup I think has helped everyone...and once Castillo starts getting on base more often in front of him, then I think we'll see his RBI #s improve. His defense has also been pretty solid too...I wasn't expecting much there and he has only made a couple of mistakes that I can think of...
April 14, 200519 yr he is meeting my expectations. The power is there and you can see it every time he makes contact. The decent Defense at 1st has been a pleasant surprise.
April 14, 200519 yr a load of doubles, hit a game-tying HR in the bottom of the ninth, he's doing fine. The HR's will come.
April 14, 200519 yr He has impressed me a bit at first...has made a couple of nice "picks" on low throws in the dirt.
April 14, 200519 yr I pretty much follow with the sentiments of everyone else. He's been good so far, and is making more noise every game.
April 14, 200519 yr He is making a nice impact IMO. As expected Cabrera has been getting better pitches and has walloped the ball a few times. Lowell has seen better pitches as well but really hasn't taken advantage. His defense at 1st has been much better than I expected as he has picked several off target throws. His power is there. In the few games the offense wasn't producing he was the only consistent hitter in the lineup. It will only get better from here. :thumbup
April 14, 200519 yr I think Delgado has been great. He has been our most consistent hitter. He has been on base for all but one game and leads the team with 5 extra base hits. His rbi total is low but he is still hitting .286 with risp. He has struck out alot, though, which he will need to work on but you kind of expect that. The cabrera/delgado pair has struck out 15 times which can really kill rallies. Anyway the key to offense is consistency and i think delgado has provided that.
April 14, 200519 yr I think he's doing just fine -- the power numbers arent there yet but will come in time. I think he's doing great considering he hasn't faced the majority of NL pitchers very much throughout his career. If you're trying to ask whether or not we're dissapointed in Delgado -- I'd say no. If I was to be dissapointed in someone it would be the guys arount him. Lowell and Cabrera have the "protection" they need now and don't seem to be doing much with it thus far. That being said -- it's only 9 games so hopefully they improve with time.
April 14, 200519 yr I think that he's doing well despite having to adjust to the NL pitching and new ballpark and I don't think we'll see what he can really do until maybe June or July. Remember that Pudge had a bit of a learning curve as well and we know how he ended up. :mischief
April 14, 200519 yr He's been great. He leads the team in slugging percentage and on-base percentage, and he's second in batting average. Cabrera has been getting a lot to hit, opponents have been quick to make pitching changes, and I've gotten to use "DELGADOWNED" a few times already. One week into the season, what more could I ask for?
April 14, 200519 yr In my opinion, Carlos Delgado is already making an impact in the lineup and is showing his value. Sure, he has only 1 home run and 4 RBI with a .333 AVG, but Delgado is not even getting hot yet. So, just sit back and relax and enjoy the show. He is greatly improved defensively and is hitting for average. P.S. Thanks for your responses on my poll yesterday. It had alot of helpful advice.
April 14, 200519 yr I think Delgado's impact is greater on the other players. Cabs & Lowell need to come through because they're gonna be pitching around Delgado.
April 14, 200519 yr Delgado's always been a "slow" starter (I remember him saying that he needs 30 AB's to be "ready") so I don't think it's fair to get on him about his lack of power numbers. He's hit when necessary, and I can't remember a time when I said "if it weren't for Delgado..." so I have no complaints. I did expect a higher HR total and lower average, but I can't complain about the high average and doubles. I just hope he busts out this weekend in New York, that would be beyond sweet.
April 14, 200519 yr While he'll make some adjustments at the plate to deal with the shift being employed as the season goes on and continue to cause problems for pitchers throughout the league because this is one guy who knows what to do with a mistake pitch (as we've already seen), the most impressive thing to date has been his play at first which, while not Gold Glove, is certainly a notch or three higher than I think most of us expected. Just being there has really has changed the "look" of the Marlins. A great pickup !
April 14, 200519 yr I really hope Delgado has a HUGE weekend in New York.... Show Pedro who is boss :notworthy
