June 29, 200521 yr Yanks' need may center on Encarnacion By Juan C. Rodriguez Staff Writer Posted June 29 2005 MIAMI GARDENS ? Since the 2003 World Series, the Yankees have been enamored with Juan Pierre. They may settle for another Marlins outfielder to fill their need in center field. According to a National League source, the Yankees have inquired about Juan Encarnacion. Their interest could intensity if they can't pry Mark Kotsay, considered their top target, from the Oakland Athletics. The center field situation has reached a critical point in the Bronx, where the Yankees have resorted to using Tony Womack in the spot Bernie Williams can no longer anchor. The Marlins continue to tell teams relief help is their top priority leading up to the July 31 non-waiver trading deadline. The Marlins have liked Paul Quantrill in the past and the Yankees are desperate to move him. Quantrill, 36, has been less than spectacular. He is 1-0 with a 6.75 ERA, including a 4.22 mark in his past six outings. Nonetheless, he does have a solid track record, logging a 1.75 ERA as recently as 2003 with the Dodgers. Yankees scout Jeff Wetherby has been in attendance this week, and Yankees officials had a major meeting at their Tampa headquarters Tuesday. The financial implications of a Quantrill-for-Encarnacion deal could make it all the more attractive to the Marlins. The Yankees would likely pick up all or most of the remaining $1.57 million of Quantrill's 2005 salary plus the $400,000 buyout of a 2006 club option they have already declined. Encarnacion, who did not start Tuesday's game, is owed $2.39 million through season's end, money that could be used to land a more lucrative rental for the stretch run. The question is whether the Marlins believe Quantrill could contribute to a bullpen they have struggled to fortify. The Marlins have already made unsuccessful plays for Ugueth Urbina, Brian Fuentes, Danny Graves and Jorge Julio, among others. Quantrill, who has averaged 85 appearances over the past four seasons, has allowed 48 hits and five homers in 32 innings. Three of those homers came in a 17-1 loss to the Red Sox on May 28. In addition, Quantrill has evolved into more of a flyball pitcher. His groundball-to-flyball ratio has dropped each of the past three years. http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/basebal...-sports-marlins Not a big fan of Quantrill -- but I'll welcome just about anything to get rid of Encarnacion.
June 29, 200521 yr Lets try and hold out for someone else..if the Yanks are really desperate than why not?
June 29, 200521 yr Do it. Quantrill kinda sucks but if it means Niner can start and we can get Willy some more AB's, then do it.
June 29, 200521 yr NO, we shouldn't make this deal, we should wait it out, we can get more value for Encarnacion, I won't just settle for a washed up player the Yankees might eventually release, be patient, wait it out, pull the trigger on the most attractive option.
June 29, 200521 yr I think this potential move is a "building block" trade. Or perhaps better said, a "rebuilding block" trade. It almost doesn't matter how well Quantrill does, although a case could be made he might be better off in the National League, because at a zero cost, not to mention the $2+ million saved on Encarnacion, it signifies change, and for the Florida Marlins, change is good. And if Quantrill doesn't perform, so be it. Adios. It also says the Marlins are not about to stand pat, that Admin Beinfest is about to kick it into gear. It says the wheels are in motion to better the team and perhaps the days aren't too far away where you'll see the Chris Aguilas and Josh Willinghams actually playing baseball rather than pulling another pine sliver out of their butts. I have always thought, and continue to think Juan Encarnacion has been misjudged by a number of people on this board, but even I accept the fact he's not a needed component when it comes to this team winning. It's a beginning. But I want to see alot more.
June 29, 200521 yr I'd do it. Encarnacion is a waste of roster right now, and we need to get rid of his contract. He has a very low trade value and unless he isn't packaged in a trade with one of our superstars, then he isn't leaving any time soon.
June 29, 200521 yr Do it. Quantrill kinda sucks but if it means Niner can start and we can get Willy some more AB's, then do it. 830616 I get the feeling for Willy to get any playing time, Enc would have to be traded, Conine injured, Harris retired, Treanor sent back to the minors, and McKeon kidnapped. Can't imagine Enc has much trade value out there.

June 29, 200521 yr You know what I think is funny about all of this? That the Yankees are looking at Encarnacion to improve the outfield... I'm not sure what tape the Yankees have been looking at, but do they expect a guy who plays halfassed in right field to really be an improvement defensively in CF? I think we should pull the trigger on this and get either Quantrill or Tom Gordon... or hell maybe even Kevin Brown while they are at it, he is a groundballer and would actually do well with our defense. But back to more important things, trade Enco to the Yankees so I can watch them regret ever trading for him. lol

June 29, 200521 yr Trading Encarnacion to the Yanks for Quantrill would be a downgrade on all fronts.

June 29, 200521 yr I would do it, we got Conine who has been hitting almost everytime he starts. He proved it last year. Plus with our struggling bullpen, he can be a big help if he can pitch like he did in his old days.

Oh please at least JP actually runs for the ball, Enco just kinda... well it isnt really jogging... I think I will just stick with Spanish and call it footing. lol.
June 29, 200521 yr Wouldn't be the first time we've brought it up Fran! And Valykrin, it doesn't look like Andruw Jones particularly hustles for balls in the outfield either, yet he'll be considered probably the greatest defensive center fielder ever. And no I'm not comparing Enc to Andruw Jones. That's night and day. But that's natural to Encarnacion. He just sort of strides. And yes he's made some poor plays in right field lately, no question. But I don't know if I'd say JP is anything more than an average center fielder. He can run, that's about it.
June 29, 200521 yr lol. Oh please at least JP actually runs for the ball, Enco just kinda... well it isnt really jogging... I think I will just stick with Spanish and call it footing. lol. 831009 It seems like people keep trying to think of ways to bash Enc. The fact is you rarely see Enc misplay a ball in the outfield, while JP on the other hand, that can't be said. Not to mention Enc's got a terrific arm and JP has the arm strength of my mom. I could care less if Enc doesn't look like he's giving 100% or what his facial expressions are, all I care about are results. This is kinda funny that I'm making such a pro-Enc comment like this because not too long ago I was Enc's biggest critic. But I never questioned his ability to play defense or if he was trying hard enough, the thing that got to me were the constant terrible at-bats, and he's made huge strides this season in fixing that problem, and I've eaten a lot of crow because of that. I'll gladly take his .340 OBP along with his occasional power. Enc's play should be the least of our problems right now.

June 29, 200521 yr what is the chances of them pullinbg back up chris Aguilia back into the majors. He has been playing good down there was told on the minor's thread. He could be a good defensive player out there and the kid has heart. Then you could move enc easily but not for this deal, something else please.

When was the last time you saw him dive? As for the offense I can't complain, but defensively I'd take JP in center over Encarnacion no questions asked. That's all I'm saying.
