yeah, had they won the world series the firesale would have still happend...

you can only lose so much money.

I'm not fond of Loria or Samson at all but a fact is a fact, owning a MLB team in So. Florida is a money pit, obviously there is alot of support for the Marlins but the thing about that support is that most of it isn't buying products or filling seats at Dolphin Stadium.

If I was the owner, I'd put as much money as I could into the team.. but there comes a time when you've lost too much money and things have to change. I believe that until a new stadium is built there will be around 1-2 firesales every decade...

Absolutely yes. It doesn't matter if they would have made a few more $$$ in the playoffs, there is still no new stadium for these guys to make revenue off of. Besides, let us not forget that the first "market correction (Firesale) happend after they won the World Series.

Well said, I agree and voted Yes, it would have still happened

Absolutley, I think the team had this in mind already in mid-summer. Had the Marlins gone to the playoffs the ownership would have used it as ammo towards their cause, emphasizing that they've placed a winning team on the field and peolple still dont show up to games.

I agree. The biggest tell-tale sign that the decision was made by mid-season was the actions or non-action by the front office, both at the All-Star Break and Trade Deadlines. A team desperate to make the team better would have made 2 obvious decisions. 1) They would have have found a way, most likely by using their prospects, to land the extra HR bat that as needed by the team along with a couple other stronger modifications to the roster. and 2) Almost every other organization would have undoubtedly made a managerial change by the All Star Break. These 2 things here are the signs of a team not positioning itself to become better in the "here and now mode," but a team that is building for the future by saving prospects and not having the urgency to make a managerial change that probably would have saved the current season. These 2 were the signs of a rebuilding organization. Before some of you debate this, make sure to research the trends of teams throughout MLB history just as they went into the rebuilding mode. What the fish did this last year was clearly a "wait 'til next year" attitude, especially after the trade deadlines passed.

In short, the answer in undoubtedly yes.

I would say no or really maybe. The big IF is the reason, even after winning it all in 2003 the Marlins made some adjustments in letting DLee, Pudge, ENC and Redman go for really nothing much in exchange. I still believe that Loria wants a winner so bad that despite his market situation if the team had made the playoffs he would have still sought to be highly competitive. In otherwords keeping Beckett and Delgado for another run next year while letting other pieces go like Enc again and Sea Bass and finding cheaper replacements.

I'm not entirely sure. Even if it was necessary, which I think it is or would have been very shortly, I don't think Loria would have allowed it.

We are rather fortunate that everything broke right for this shift. A new manager. Trade bait not too far off their prime to get fair value. And an extreme seller's market. Had we have waited until after 2006, the stadium situation probably wouldn't have been much better while our field talent worth less in trades and a manager who may not appreciate working with youngsters as much as Girardi.

I say no. I think the putrid performance of the squad in the last month of the season was what made Samson's voice win out over Loria's. If the team makes the playoffs, you'd have to think that Loria would again see the investment as worth it and keep on trucking since his system was working to that point. I think, of course this being my own opinion, that the 10-2 Philly game burned in Loria as much as it haunted us. While we were busy examining our souls as to whether or not we should even root for this team anymore, Loria was wondering whether or not he should put money into the team anymore. When something so bad happens, everything else that was negative hits you like a dam opening up to a river. You're bombarded every which way in your head by all that you were able to cope with before, and it becomes overbearing. Samson probably hit him at the right time, and off came the team's head.

Besides, think of it this way. This firesale was swallowed easier than the last one. Do you honestly think, assuming of course that the Front Office is being sincere in saying staying in South Florida is the number one priority, that this fanbase would have put up with the second firesale so civilly had the team got into the playoffs? Made some noise? Won a World Series? Might as well have got up and left right then and there because what was left wouldn't have forgiven.

I don't think Samson's voice won out over Loria's, rather Samson's argument won out WITH Loria.

It's really hard to say either way, but I don't really think this issue lies within our winning or not. I think the issue lies within the stadium deal, or lack thereof. Therefore, yes, I still believe it would've happened.

Unless going deep into the playoffs or winning the WS again had resulted in a definitive stadium deal, I believe this post is essentially correct - it was the death of the stadium deal that drove events, pure and simple.
