January 23, 200620 yr Do you think Robert Andino will start at shortstop over Hanley Ramirez? -- Jared H., Miami Good question because many are considering it a given that Ramirez will automatically step in Day 1 and being the starter. There are such high expectations surrounding Ramirez, who is being compared to Edgar Renteria. In terms of talent, Ramirez should get the nod, but is he ready? He doesn't have any big league experience, and there is always a concern about rushing players. Andino, on the other hand, appeared in 17 games and made a number of starts in September after Alex Gonzalez was out because of his elbow injury. Andino made the jump from Double-A, and he predictably had his struggles at the plate, batting .159 (7-for-44). What Andino gained was valuable experience, as he played in crucial games. Ultimately, I believe Ramirez will be the starter on Opening Day, but if Andino excels in Spring Training, that position will be interesting to watch. Why don't the Marlins consider moving first baseman Jason Stokes to left field? -- Dustin L., Honolulu Stokes showed great power a few years ago and was regarded as the first baseman of the future. But he's been bothered by some wrist injuries. He underwent a surgical procedure on his wrist a few months ago, but he's expected to be ready for Spring Training. With his size and mobility, the organization views him as a first baseman, not a left field option.
January 23, 200620 yr Hanley could use time in the minors, but unless he's an absolute disaster in the spring, I think the job's his. I'm still surprised there's no talk at all about moving Andino to second-base. As for Stokes, the team already tried moving him to left-field when both he and Adrian Gonzalez were in the organization and the move was a disaster. Let's get him healthy before worrying about a position.
January 23, 200620 yr Uh Accord, just because someone asked the question in an email you don't really need to title the thread that way.... I mean Stokes sure as hell isn't going to be a starting outfielder.... ahh, guess it doesn't really matter. /nazi mod bitching & Malman that's not an awful idea, especially if Stokes makes the team as a bench player (I don't think he will), but I'm sure Wes Helms would be the ideal platoon option at 1B. Helms hits lefties extremely well.
January 23, 200620 yr Andino starting SS is a joke! The kids stinks! He was late last year on every single damn pitch!!! If we got Hanley in this trade why wouldnt you start him? I dont think Hanley can get much worse than Andino
January 23, 200620 yr Andino is a sack of sh*t. :notworthy :notworthy :notworthy :notworthy :notworthy :notworthy
January 23, 200620 yr I thought I read an article about a month ago on here that Andino, despite his piss poor performances in limited PT last year, was dogging it in Winter Ball.
January 23, 200620 yr Ramirez isn't ready to be our starting SS. but Andino is even less ready, so I think Ramirez will get the nod. Both will probably see time in the minors and the big leagues next season I would think.
January 23, 200620 yr How about a source for yoru stuff here? You got an hour, else I'm closing this, we sure as hell arent going sourceless on quoted material.

January 24, 200620 yr If we got Hanley in this trade why wouldnt you start him? I dont think Hanley can get much worse than Andino Ramirez last year (AA): .271, 6 HR, 52 RBI Andino last year (AA): .269, 5 HR, 48 RBI Not a big difference.
January 24, 200620 yr I truthfully see Reese starting at SS and Uggla starting at 2B. Reese and Uggla give the middle infield the best chance of playing mistake free because them combined make the most experience. Uggla gives you power that we have never had at 2B. If Ramirez excels in AAA this year I can see them promoting him up and taking SS if Reese is disgusting at the plate.

Yep, goosd stats there, not much of a difference so why not give it to Han and let him develop

I dont think Hanley can get much worse than Andino Ramirez last year (AA): .271, 6 HR, 52 RBI Andino last year (AA): .269, 5 HR, 48 RBI Not a big difference. and yet Id rather go with the potential superstar in Hanley, than Andino
January 24, 200620 yr I wasn't advocating for one or the other there; I'm just posting the stats. I don't truthfully know myself who I want to see out there. I agree with Marlins R #1 that a Uggla/Reese combo might do the best in the interim, but it is clear that the F.O. is not playing to win now. Plus, if the above combo starts, then one or both of Andino/Ramirez would rot on the bench (with the other in the minors), which would probably hinder their development. I just don't think the decision is as "automatic" as some might think. Spring Training will hopefully clear things up one way or another.

That would be my guess as well, although let's face it, none of us knows how spring training plays itself out. I wouldn't write-off Andino so quickly, obviously the Marlins aren't. Ultimately it's not out of the realm of possibility (without positioning either one) that the two of them represent the Marlins middle infield of the future.
January 24, 200620 yr Just let them duke it out in spring training, if Hanley's ready he's ready, if not put andino in there till he is....it's pretty simple :hat
January 24, 200620 yr After the crap Andino pulled in the AFL, he doesn't even deserve the shot. Hell, I would trade him if he had any value, but not much market for a baby with no bat.
January 24, 200620 yr I don't disagree Andino was a horse's ass in the AFL but a) he's kid, 21 years old, b) was thrust into a bad situation when both Gonzalez and Easley went down, and c) came up from AA ball without alot of high level, high expectation experience under his belt. He also is married with a baby and I'm guessing part of what happened this fall was simply he wanted to be home with his wife and baby more than he wanted to be playing meaningless ball in the desert. I'm not here to sing his praises or make guarantees about his ultimate ability to play at the major league level, but I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. Not everyone is ready to be thrust into the major league spotlight at age 21. Some people mature quicker than others, it may be he's not emotionally equipped for the show right now and he needs another year or even two before he becomes the player the Marlins think (thought) he could be. Because I don't know the back story I'm willing, at least for now, to give him the benefit of the doubt.
