June 1, 200620 yr Let me start out with saying what I great homestand. I never would have thought we would go 6-3 after those dreadful losses on the road. Back to JJ. Is this guy for real? *knocks on wood* Every time he pitches he pretty much always gives us a solid start. Today was his "worst" outing of the season and he went 7 and gave up only 3 runs. Is JJ on a hot streak or is he always going to be this good? Same goes with Ricky. Discuss.
June 1, 200620 yr He will come back to earth eventually, but he certainly looks real poised out there.
June 1, 200620 yr Of course he's for real. Reminds me of Brad Penny the way he goes after hitters. He probably will never be more than a solid #3 pitcher though. Still, thats good enough for me.
June 1, 200620 yr He probably will never be more than a solid #3 pitcher though. Still, thats good enough for me. so therefore he isnt for real, in your eyes right now he is pitching like an ace

No way man....I'm just saying...he'll probably be a very consistant guy like Brad Penny in his career. Not an ace though.
June 1, 200620 yr lets let a few more months go by before we judge him, with scouting and hitters watching tape batters will adjust to what he does now, if he can reajust himself once that happens to keep this preformance up, then we can talk about him being a top of the rotation type player.
June 1, 200620 yr JJ is pitching very smart and effective. Gets ahead of hitters and puts em away after that. The key is to get ahead of hitters.

He made it seem like the only guys who are for real are aces

He made it seem like the only guys who are for real are aces That's not even close to what I was saying, but good try. Holly asked if he is for real. I interpreted that her into saying is Johnson going to pitch like an ace all the time. Is Johnson going to be the next great starter in the NL. WildMarlinMan then said he was for real, but he only saw him as a #3. Now if Holly didnt mean what I interpreted, then that is my problem, but I never said anything like #1s are the only good starters. Dont put words into my mouth. :thumbup
June 1, 200620 yr It seems to me like he might be the guy who can most closely match Big Tex's intensity come playoff time. Stuff might not be as good, but I think the fire and competitiveness will be. So when it comes time for these kids to go into October, JJ should be the #1 or 2 guy in the playoff rotation. I can handle him being a solid #3 guy in the regular season(altho I see him as a #2), as long as he is a pitbull in the postseason.

I don't know what planet you're on, but good try.
June 1, 200620 yr Very good command plus good moving fastball that is tougher than most 92 MPH FB because of his height plus a GREAT slider plus success at the MLB level at only 22 years old = Future # 1 or # 2 ACE. Yes he is for real.
June 1, 200620 yr JJ settled down after giving up that 2-run HR but we just didn't give him any run suppport.
June 1, 200620 yr Are u refering if he is at a Roger Clemons or Josh Beckett level...maybe not but JJ has been pitching pretty nice for us. He has been our best starter. He appears to be a solid starter for years to come. I love this Kid!
June 1, 200620 yr Beinga t the game, I was surprised at how he recovered after being shelled for a little while. He definitely has poise and never seems to get a little out of hand. I was actually dissapointed that we put petit in, Johnson had been pitching solid and Petit wasn't on tonight- in the end in didn't really matter cause our O wasn't getting it done.
June 1, 200620 yr JJ is definitely for real. If his ability to perform well out of the bullpen earlier this season despite being a starting pitcher and his first few starts wasn't enough to prove that, I think how he performed facing two of the top pitchers in the game — Pedro Martinez and Jason Schmidt — and pretty good lineups the last couple of starts has proven that.
June 1, 200620 yr If you're measuring by performance, Johnson could very well become the ace of this staff this and future seasons. He doesn't have the stufff or the appearance of the ideal ace. That doesn't mean he can't become one though. At the end of the day, Buerhle, Colon and Penny have all been better than Beckett.
June 1, 200620 yr He throws hard, has decent movement, gets ahead in the count, doesn't give a lot of free passes, & keeps the ball down. A guy could go a long way with those qualities.
June 1, 200620 yr Back to JJ. Is this guy for real? No, he is a figment of your imagination. :lol Sorry I couldn't resist.
June 1, 200620 yr He went 7 and gave up 3 runs. Thats pretty good. You cant even concider that a bad outing. When your offense only gets 6 hits you cant really expect to win. I think JJ is for sure the real deal.
