Posted November 15, 200618 yr http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/sfl-spm...la-sports-front POINT OF NO RETURN Don't look for free agent Wes Helms to return. The Phillies are aggressively pursuing him. Minor note with HUGE impact missed in our news cycle discussion. This really hurts :banghead
November 15, 200618 yr Helms was absolutely great, but EH, is my response. All we need is a LHP bashing 1B/LF type. Jose Cruz Jr. costs you 750k, and he would hit LHP .850+ OPS. Not a big deal to replace Helms. An everyday CF and 2+ bullpen arms are a much bigger issue then Wes Helms.
November 15, 200618 yr Philles? Will they offer him a full-time 3B job? That'd be a great low-cost signing for them. Congrats to Wes and thanks for all the clutch hits and generally awesome hitting.
November 15, 200618 yr Why don't we see how this plays out and what rumors are true and not true before we start throwing dirt on the guy's coffin. The Phillies have a rumor going about almost every free agent out there who doesn't play first base. For any number of reasons and positions, Helms stands to get as much playing time here as anywhere else if not more and if that's his motivating force in free agency (besides $$ of course) we'll be as competitive as anyone.
November 15, 200618 yr Ya, just cause Berardino says something doesn't make it so. I won't write him off yet. Plus if they really are making Jacobs available, it would seem retaining Wes would be a very smart move...
November 15, 200618 yr Disappointing but with our "financial" realities what else can we do ? The Marlins it seems are the junkheap that others will continue to use to jump to better situations. I hope we can get some stability soon, but unless a stadium is built (and even then I have doubts with Loria as owner) we can forget ever keeping good FA players.
November 15, 200618 yr Shame, but we can't offer him the playing time or the salary most teams can. The Marlins certainly can offer him the playing time if they part with Jacobs. Yep. Deal Jacobs and keep Helms. Please!

Deal Jacobs and keep Helms. Please! I like Jacobs personally. I don't know, but I have a feeling that by age 28 he'll be the ideal hitter.
November 15, 200618 yr I really hate seeing former marlins in phillies uniforms. I hate Ryan Howard in a phillies uniform.
November 15, 200618 yr Its not a big lost we can find someone else to fill in that role our main concerns is Cf and the bullpen
November 16, 200618 yr The Phillies and Wes Helms have reportedly agreed to a two-year deal worth $5.5 million-$6 million. A club option for 2009 is included. Helms is a career .263/.316/.431 hitter against right-handers, so at least he has a substantial edge over the Phillies' apparent top choice, Mark DeRosa, there. However, he's not a very good defender. It's a lousy alternative, but if Helms slumps at the beginning of next season, the Phillies could drop him into a platoon role and go with Abraham Nunez at third base against righties. Nunez is just a .247/.313/.329 hitter against righties (and yes, it's easily his better side), but he does have quite an advantage with the glove. http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/6175216

DAMNIT! Well, good luck to him.

November 16, 200618 yr Damn that blows, i wanted to see Wes back.. Oh well... Wes will get destroyed this upcoming season.... :mischief
November 16, 200618 yr He's built for that ballpark, still, I think he's an iffy proposition as a starter at third.
November 16, 200618 yr Helms was a real nice clutch hitter last year. He had a good brief Marlins career. I'd wish the guy good luck if he was going to some other palce....but we play the Phillies 19 times, and we'll hopefully be competing in a playoff race. So I hope Wes spends and saves his money wisely, fields badly and hits .240 for as long as he's a Philly.
