Observations from Opening Day at the Park

Featured Replies

Here are some observations I made today:

* Why is it that the Mets fans that are here in South Florida appear to have come from scraping the bottom of the genetic barrel? Every time I see a Met fan at Dolphin Stadium, they're breathing from their mouths and hunched over. It's as if evolution stopped just short with them.

* During BP, EvenLittler SoFlaFish and myself were sitting/leaning on the railings behind home plate. Just below us Jeffrey Loria was talking to two guests of his, who appeared to be a college professor of his from Yale and his wife (they were talking alumni "stuff"). I was listening to their conversation when it turned to "stadium talk." Loria was telling the couple that they're getting a new stadium and that originally he wanted [i couldn't get the name he said] to design the exterior of the park and have HOK do the interior, but that "things don't work that way and HOK is doing the whole park . . . plus, the County is paying for 2/3 of it and they are in control." Loria also told the couple, "Once a shovel hits the dirt, they're going to be starting the redesign of the team uniforms." The couple asked about color schemes or designs and Loria said, "I love red, white, and blue, but too many teams have those colors. I think we'll go with what sells and that is silver and black." Finally, the wife in the couple said, "There sure are alot of Mets fans here, do you have your own fans." At that point (and I wasn't truly paying attention to Loria here because I was having EvenLittler SoFlaFish focus on the fielders practicing) I hear Loria say, "Sure, we do just look over your shoulder!" I look, and he's pointing to me and EvenLittler SoFlaFish who were wearing our Marlins jerseys and caps (me in my #22 Leiter jersey; EvenLittler in his #35 Willi[e] jersey).

* Did the F-16s get lost? :D

* To the jerks in Section 127, Row 14, Seats 3-8, I hope you feel like much more of a man for cussing out me and my four year old son! I can't belive this idiot made the obnoxious Mets fans who got ejected in the fifth inning in Section 126 (the girl with the "Shea Stadium South" sign) seem civilized. First of all, these idiots arrived one hour late! Then, as soon as they sat down they just decided that cussing was the way to "heckle" the Mets. Look, I have nothing against heckling. I love it, as long as it is witty, clever, and funny. However, standing up and yelling, "Why don't you come on over and s**k my c**k, fa***t!" is not! Especially, when I'm sitting there with my four year old son and sitting next to me is a man with his three year old daughter and two year old son, and in front of them is a school group of about 12 seven and eight year olds. This jerk then has the gall to turn to me and say, "Hey, I have every right to say what I want! I paid $25.00 for these seats!" To which I responded, "Well, you just confirmed how much of an idiot you are if you paid $25.00 for a Fish Tank seat! Plus, so what, I'm a season ticket holder and these are my seats! So why don't you just shut the hell up and have some class!!" By then, most of the folks around us had "my back" and he quit the cussing!"

* The Manatees were actually funny! I love that guy with "Tiny" on the back of his jersey!

* The Marlins Maniacs, however, are NOT! Why is the team now paying for these folks to stand in the aisles during the game and block my view so that they can start the wave? I am now proposing that every ballpark in America should have seating separated by those who are there for a game, and those who are there to be entertained. In these new "HARD CORE" sections, people are subject to ejection from the stadium if they get up during innings to get out, start the wave, or talk on their cellphones! Who's in with me?!?

* Finally, it was good to see BroncoBob27 and miamibaseball at the game. Spent the bottom of the 9th inning sitting with Bob and his wife.

Oh well, we'll get 'em tomorrow.

Good to know orange won't be seeping into the team colors, but I'm a little worried about a re-design of the uniforms.

I love the pictures.

Yea, Mets fans were really getting on my nerves. When we were walking to our car, some idiot (and drunk) Mets fan was yelling like a moron and telling Marlins fans to go home and telling his fellow idiot Mets fans to join him in his tailgate. He saw us walk by him and he's like, "You guys go home!" and pointed towards the exit of the parking lot. We have more class, so we just stayed quiet, but we did give him dirty looks. Moron. Little did he know, I was back at my other home. ;)

About the colors, I also like that they aren't keeping orange, but I hope they don't take away the teal.

I agree, I can't wait until it happens though. It means were are one step closer to a new home.

Did anyone see my friend fall on the field after he reached over and grabbed a foul ball rolling along the first base side?

LOL. What a clown.

We had made some prop bets prior to the game. One of the prop bets was if you grabbed a rolling foul ball, all the other guys have to pay you $5. Well, we all paid. He's lucky they didnt escort him out.

I was wearing a brown t-shirt and we were sitting by the photographers on the 1B side.

Admin was sitting about 10 feet behind us.

THANK GOD about the uniform news. The black teal and silver is such a great look and if we keep the colors I will be extremely happy/relieved. If the change the design a little I wont mind, as long as our cap still has a letter and a fish on it.

OMG...those idiots with the "Shea Stadium South" sign actually got ejected? haha.

I got to the game, and the drunk idiots, started chanting "Lets Go Mets" all over the place, with that stupid sign...I felt like telling them something, and I would have, but my uncle is a Mets fan, and it was b/c of him, that I went in the first place.

But I'm glad they were ejected! :lol

I wasn't very far from you. I was in row 13 section 126. When I got back from eatting an amazing stadium meal(yeah right), I was informed by the guys sitting next to us that the girl with the "Shea Stadium South" got kicked out of the stadium. Was there any reason inperticular? As for the maniacs, they're horrible! I have seen drunken fans have a better response from the fans than these people. They had no energy whatsoever. How can they expect to "energize the crowd" if they're whispering amongst each other "Come on guys, lets start the wave". There was several people near me screaming at them to just give up. Despite all this, after 2 innings of them trying to get it started, they finally succeeded. As for the maniacs, they were pretty funny, and they received a lot of cheers, so I guess the promotion is working. But honestly, what's up with the "minnows"? They're kind of stretching that "dance team" thing a bit too much. Those kids could dance and all, but come on. And I also found the whole DJ between innings very annoying.

I saw it. I laughed because I sat there once, and I told my buddy if a ball came our way I was gonna fall on the field on "accident" attempting to get it. Sure enough, I fell, missed the ball, and got talked about on tv by Tommy and Rich for like 45 seconds haha.

Yeah, I saw that, it was great.

And anyone else think that the Uni redesign is a clever ploy to get us to buy new unis twice in the next 3 years? Unless the name change is coming earlier than we thought.

The Miami Herald photographer asked him for his name cause they got a great shot of him falling on his azz. I tried to grab him but gravity FTW

I don't think it's a clever ploy. From what I've heard, we are remaining the Florida Marlins with the current logos and unis until opening day in the new park. That's when we will have new unis and logos. I don't see them changing it in between.

Hmm, I just didn't think that it would take 2 years to design unis....but then again, wtf do i know?

It's not that it takes two years to design the new uniforms, logos, etc. It's that a uniform design cannot be incorporated immediately. It needs MLB approval first, it needs to clear any copyright/intellectual property issues, etc.

Excellent post as usual Soflafish and thanks a ton for the pics! Really enjoy them. Good for you for standing up to obnoxious fans like that. I can get pretty rowdy myself at baseball games, but would never be swearing like that in front of a child.

Also, we need a youtube of thedon's friend falling over...good stuff! :lol

I apologize for my friend, I was the big kid in the Willingham jersey sitting with them. It was inappropriate of him to use that kind of language in front of all those kids, but he's a lose cannon. Sorry.

If I were that close to Loria, I probably would have taken a swing at him.

I am going to bring a sign to Shea "DOLPHIN STADIUM NORTH"

didn't the Marlins used to have a group start the wave and give something out?

if they do that at our infamous 5000 people games, I hope nobody does it.

sounds like we need to NEVER play the Mets again on opening day.
