May 14, 200818 yr It is interesting he spent Monday working on his hitting with Tony Gwynn (boy wouldn't you like a little of that on the Marlins) and this evening *Detroit* put Jones on waivers as the next step in his unconditional release. Stories say he's a free agent at 1PM on Thursday. Clearly he expects to wind up somewhere, and soon.

May 14, 200818 yr I don't want it to sound like I'm advocating for Jones because I'm, frankly I don't know enough about the playability of either to get off the fence. But I am reminded as I read the two posts above of that old saying, "A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush"... At $290k there is almost zero downside.
May 14, 200818 yr Point taken but given his recent track record you can make a safe bet on what Jones' performance will entail. Loften played very well last year and is actually a CFer. Even if he were free I don't think it's worth bothering.

May 14, 200818 yr Ross hasn't played well enough this season to trust him against both RHP and LHP on a regular basis. Ideally if Amezaga were hitting the two would be splitting time (obviously).

It is online in the sun sentinel-this also was part of the story:The left-handed hitting Jones, 33, also would give the Marlins another option in the leadoff spot. Born in San Diego, Jones continues to make his residence in that city's suburbs and could opt to sign with a team closer to home. So, it seems that it is possible and possibly not.

Playing time? Parking space location? Buffet menu? More money on top of his existing contract? Does he really want to play for Padres because it's an easy commute and spend the summer in the basement? I wonder if either of the Gonzalez' have spoken with him? I would think Luis Gonzalez is probably someone his side, if not himself directly, would seek out for advice and some insight into the team. May 17, 200818 yr We really need Jones now that Willingham will be out much longer... That is a nonsense statement. Jones would not fill neither the position nor the batting role of Willingham. IF Jones can play a decent CF for us and hit RHP better than Amezega, then he would be an OK pick up. Since I think neither is likely, he is not a good pick up. If Lofton can still play CF, then he is the clear choice as a superior rent-a-player. That doesn't even account for the fact that the Marlins are going to let Ross try to prove he's a legitimate .800 OPS type guy as an everyday player.
May 17, 200818 yr Honestly the only players i wanna see manning CF for us are Cody, Carroll and only in an emergency Amezaga until a kid that is presently waving at breaking balls with his bat at Carolina is ready to play in the majors. When ADA is healthy he may get a crack at it as well

They're also likely looking for someone to help shoulder the load of injured OF Josh Willingham, who just experienced a setback in his rehab -- though Luis Gonzalez has hit fairly well since replacing him, at .317/.369/.433 in 16 games. So they're a likely destination for free agent Jacque Jones. Juan C. Rodriguez of the South Florida Sun-Sentinal has something of a third-hand rumor that the Marlins could sign Jones by this evening. Damon Lapa, Jones's agent, has, of course, denied the rumor. He says that he and his client hope to narrow down a list in the next few days before ultimately deciding on a destination. His new team will only be on the hook for a prorated amount of the league minimum $390,000. "We've started some dialogue with a number of clubs," Lapa said. "Ever since he technically became free there's been an uptick in intensity. He's weighing all his options." Rodriguez notes that Jones is from and continues to reside in San Diego, and might seek employment closer to home. The Padres could probably use him, though I'm not sure Jones would want to sign there, given the team's play to this point. The two LA teams have plenty of outfielders. The Marlins still do seem like the most likely destination. The only small problem I can see is that both Jones and Azemaga have clear career splits showing they hit righties better than lefties, though Jones bucked that trend last year in 87 plate appearances against southpaws. But that shouldn't stop the Marlins from pursuing a potential upgrade in center. May 18, 200818 yr People have a right to be critical of baseball players, they get paid millions of dollars to throw and hit a ball, often they don't even do that that well (even bench players and specialists still generate millions of dollars throughout their careers). I think they can handle what pixel-based non-entities say on the internet. Jacque Jones is pretty good, good power numbers, gets on base OK, K's a ton though, not sure if he is the answer to CF, definitely a good stop gap until Maybin comes.
