New name for home of Dolphins and UM: LandShark Stadium?

> Posted by Sarah Talalay on May 1, 2009 12:12 PM

The ink might not be dry on the deal, but a source says Dolphin Stadium could soon be renamed LandShark Stadium.

That?s LandShark as in LandShark Lager. It?s likely a short-term branding opportunity, perhaps for one season, but the arrangement would fit with Dolphins owner Stephen Ross? plan to make the venue an entertaining tropical South Florida experience. LandShark is served at Jimmy Buffett?s Margaritaville restaurants.

Buffett has been chatting with Ross about a business opportunity. But he wasn?t revealing anything about a business deal when I asked him about it at Monday?s Heat-Atlanta Hawks playoff game.

?You?re going to find out real soon,? Buffett said with a smile. ?Real soon. It?s going to be great.?

A press conference to announce the deal could be held next week.

I'm sure I'm missing one, or three.

It was Dolphins Stadium before changing to Dolphin Stadium. I think you have them all otherwise.

It goes:

Jeebus---all those changes for 3 different variations.

Atleast the picked something new this time instead of going to Joe Robbie Park at Dolphin Stadium

It goes:

Nope.

It goes:

Joe Robbie

Dolphin

back to Joe Robbie

Pro Player Park

Pro Player Stadium

Dolphins

back to Dolphin

So far as promotional sponsorship its a very good name... but I think we need a name that sticks for at least a decade before its changed...

What bothers me is that the article mentions it as being only a 1-year thing... if its changed I want it FOR GOOD. Enough renaming this stuff.

During design and construction, it was officially Joe Robbie Stadium. Then they changed it to Dolphin in the year it opened ('87), then back to Joe Robbie later on in '87.

Dolphin Stadium (1987, 2006?present)

Joe Robbie Stadium (1980-1986, 1987?1996)

Pro Player Park (1996)

Pro Player Stadium (1996?2005)

Dolphins Stadium (2005?2006)

Also, per Dolphin Stadium website:

Entering its 21st year of operation, Dolphin Stadium, originally known as Joe Robbie Stadium . . .

I agree. But yeah, I do like the LandShark name though.

That website is wrong.

From a December 1, 1985 AP article:

Miami Dolphins owner Joe Robbie, calling the occassion "just a pause in our impossible dream," officially broke ground at the Dolphin Stadium project Sunday.

From a April 30, 1987 AP article:

Joe Robbie, the team's owner, has directed the planning for the new 74,835-seat stadium the Miami Dolphins will move into this season, 15 miles north of the Orange Bowl. He even put up his franchise as collateral for the loans needed to finance the $100 million project. Now he can truly call it his own because the park will be named Joe Robbie Stadium.

The name "Joe Robbie Stadium" doesn't even show up in LexisNexis until April 30th-May 1st when articles from AP, United Press International, The New York Times, and The Globe Mail announced the name change to Joe Robbie Stadium.

Don't thank me, thank LexisNexis.

Someone (Senor WinsGames) said that my first source could have been a typo (as in the "Dolphin stadium project") and that it's not enough

January 24, 1987 St. Petersburg Times article on ticket prices:

The cheapest ticket to a Miami Dolphins game next season at newly constructed Dolphin Stadium will cost $ 26. That's $ 4 more than the cheapest ticket at the Dolphins' former home, the Orange Bowl, but Dolphin officials claim fans will get more for their money. Most of the 75,000 Orange Bowl seats were bench spaces that cost $ 20; about 2,000 other seats, with chairbacks and armrests, cost $ 24. All 75,000 seats in Dolphin Stadium will have chairbacks and armrests, all will have a clear view of the field and all will be 19 inches wide. Orange Bowl bench spaces are 17 inches wide and 4,500 seats have obstructed views.

March 16, 1987 Business Wire article comparing the stadium with Charlotte Motor Speedway:

The main difference between the two facilities is that Charlotte Motor Speedway offer linear seating while Dolphin Stadium features circular seating. However, the financial requirements of the two venues are practically identical.

January 31, 1986 New York Times article about a stadium that Donald Trump wanted to build for the Jets or the USFL Generals:

Dolphin Stadium and Mr. Trump's proposed stadium share strong similarities. Each was designed by architects from the firm of Hellmuth, Obata & Kassabaum and bears great similarities to Giants Stadium, on which many of the architects worked while employed by the firm of Howard, Needles, Tannen and Bergendoff.

There are 83 other articles as well. The name was definitely Dolphin Stadium.

I'm with Rab on this one. I was around when the place was being built. The way I remember it was that Joe Robbie didn't want it named after himself. He didn't want any attention being taken away from the team. It wasn't called Joe Robbie until after he passed (maybe he hadn't passed yet, don't remember the specifics) and his kids had taken over the team (pre-Huizenga sale) that they changed the name to give the much deserved recognition to the man that was the first to build an NFL stadium with his own $$$. This was also before one of his sons started his downward spiral with drugs and the law.

It'll always be Joe Robbie to me. Dosen't matter what they put up there in big letters. People tend to care too much about how things make them look to others. For all I care they can call it WonderBra Stadium, "A great place to play." Or, The 5th Borough, "Hell, they're all here anyways."

I don't see why they didn't rename it Marlins Stadium afterall the Marlins are the only team that won a championship in it, or they could call the Ruination of the Robbie Family Stadium or my favorite Huzienga Sucks and totally ruined professional sports in the city of Miami Stadium
