Danny Knobler of CBS Sports reports that the Braves were in serious discussions to trade for Marlins outfielder Cody Ross before pulling off the Nate McLouth deal yesterday. The Marlins made Ross available, but ultimately decided not to deal him. Some within the Atlanta organization would have preferred to trade for Ross because he wouldn't have commanded as much of a return as McLouth did.

Knobler reports that rival officials believe the Marlins are now "open to" trading Ross and Jeremy Hermida, not just Jorge Cantu and Dan Uggla.

Cody is ours and only ours. Now and forever.

I'm getting the feeling the FO feels this season is a wash.

I would have been pissed to see Cody in a Braves Uni.

I'm always prepared to be proven wrong but I still think making a number of players potentially available is in preparation to trading up (players that can make the team better just by donning a Marlins uni) not down (for prospects one or more years away from contributing). Like everyone else I have my list of who I'd want to wind up with at the end of cycle and if trading away a Ross is a means to that end or in furtherence of a grander plan by the front office I'm all for it even though it might include moving player(s) I have affection for.

wow this is not a good sign and i really hope the front office isnt throwing this season away. crazier things have happened even though we are 7.5 out.

we really need to get on a hot streak

Yay another market correction.

Off with their heads if they trade Cody and that big smile.

Do you go out of your way to be as dumb as you are?

Looking at our schedule playing .500 ball for the month of June would be a moral victory (and I'm not being the least bit facetious).

Thank god. It's time to rebuild like I've been saying.

1) Trade Hermida ASAP before he becomes a bench player.

2) Trade Uggla before he becomes a consistent .200 hitter.

3) Trade Ross because we are rebuilding.

4) Trade Cantu because we are rebuilding.

It's time to start Maybin, Morrison, Gaby Sanchez, Raynor, and Coghlan and just let them go through their growing pains in time for the new stadium when we are ready to compete.

There would be nobody in the stands if we fielded that team for the next 3 seasons.

Wow, I'm surprised everyone reacted that way to Cody almost being dealt. Cody's just not my favorite player. He's so severely streaky that he makes it difficult sometimes. Then again, Jayson Werth is streaky, but he's a good ballplayer.

I've always known Cody was one of the tradable guys, due to his extreme streakiness and and replaceablity . I hate to see him go, he's been one of my favorites since 2006, but he is replacable.

Between now and the opening of the new ballpark in '12, a lot of players are gonna be replaceable

Trade Hermida, trade Cantu, trade Uggla. But don't trade Cody. The guy may be streaky but he brings an excitement to the ballpark that other players just don't bring. That, and he is one of the few players on our team that plays great defense in addition to being an offensive threat. And for those of you who don't think Cody is a valuable offensive player, he's on pace to get nearly 100 RBI and he's been a hot player in recent weeks.

As silly as it might seem, a high energy guy like Cody who comes up with more big hits than anyone else on the team actually makes watching a really crappy baseball team a lot more bearable.

seems like the whole board is in panic mode...

i still think we have a very, very good team...and we have more talent on our pitching staff than anyone else in the division...we just have to keep plugging and the bounces will start to go our way...we couldnt have played any worse in may...i highly doubt that is a trend that continues the rest of the way

Twas a bright spot during that 2007 season.

Let's just trade the whole team away....again

Maybe you're right. But honestly, I can hardly stand watching him at the plate, because it always seems like he hacks at the low and outside pitches and the turns in every time the pitch is inside. He's a free-swinger, which is what it is, but his ABs are predictable for me and he strikes out an awful lot, as does much of our lineup. Sure he does have the big hit, but it's like what every 6 weeks? He'll get hot for about 15 days and cool off for 30. VERY replaceable.

I don't understand why McLouth would command more in a trade than Cody - I mean with Cody you are getting a 2 for 1 deal, batter and pitcher (note that 0.00 ERA!!!) lol

He's got a big swing, no one will deny that, and it doesn't take much for him to get too long, but when he stays within himself he's a prototypical fourth outfielder on any team and starter at least a third of the teams in either *league*. Combined with his solid defense it's understandable why the Braves would be interested and a compliment to him and the Fish the Braves were interested. But he is replaceable, that shouldn't be ignored and the fact the Marlins wouldn't take what was probably two of the three that Pittsburgh got for McLouth continues to reinforce for me the Fish have bigger plans and what they would gotten back for Ross might not have not only not interested them, but might not have fit what a third team we're trying to partner with had in mind as compensation as well.

:thumbup

I would rather keep Cantu and Ross, but dump Uggla and Hermida. Hermida's had his chances to prove that he can be a starting outfielder, and he's failed. The way Uggla and Hermida have been playing this year, really anyone else could fill in for them (would probably be a wash if Maybin started hitting in the majors a bit, and Coghlan played full time).

A McLouth like deal would really do nothing for us. None of the guys that Pittsburgh received are anything worth writing home about and aren't likely to ever be valuable MLB pieces. Hernandez is just another toolsy guy who when you down to it isn't all that much different from the 18 or so toolsy outfielders we already have.

When you trade an effective major league player for 3 guys who aren't really gonna amount to anything, what are you actually getting? When it comes to guys like Cantu and Uggla, I know their time with us is limited, but I sure hope that when the time comes we get as least one worthwhile piece in return or else we really aren't doing anything but getting rid of talent and creating a hole that is not likely to be filled soon (see: Willingham &n Co. for Bonifacio & Co.).
