June 7, 200917 yr I'm just waiting for the day where people say I MIGHT just be correct about Lindstrom...about him not being Mr.Dominant. Matt Lindstrom closing games is about as big a joke as Emilio Bonifacio leading off. As I've said...good thing the role, itself, is pretty overrated. Pretty sad we can't rely on him for a 3 run lead, however. We're just babying him & making excuses for him b/c he throws 100 and it looks fancy. Fact is, he's no better than Kevin Gregg...the guy everyone loves making fun of. The only difference is, Fredi appears to have learned from last year...so now, when Lindstrom struggles, he has guys ready to replace him. The guy's had three bad games. He's had a whole lot more than 3 bad games.
June 7, 200917 yr lol at caring about the rest of the division, hate to tell you, but it will take a miracle for us to be even in contention for the division in September. Lol just stfu please seriously
June 7, 200917 yr So what's the story with Hermida, anyone know? The only thing the Sun-Sentinel says is "Hermida left the team to attend to a family matter. He will be back for today's game."

Both Lindstrom and Nunez were getting screwed with the strikezone.

The potential is there, he's just been inconsistent. Closer role overrated? Ask Brad Lidge if it's overrated right now. It's too bad Fredi can't relieve you when you write stupid posts. Lindstrom=inconsistent we get the point. Marlins won and everyone else lost so we are good.
June 7, 200917 yr He's had more than 3 bad games this year. His first game of the year, when he walked two and needed 32 pitches to get the save, his first blown save against the Mets ,his second blown save against the phillies when he gave up 7 runs, May 23rd against the Rays when gave up 4 runs, the next day when he walked 3 batters in .2 innings, and yesterdays game against the Giants. So he's had a total of 6 bad games. So he's had a total of 6 bad games. But he's had alot of good games that shows us why he's our closer. He's been inconsistent, sure. But he's good. He's 11th in the league in saves, and If you take away to TERRIBLE games against the Phillies and Rays, his ERA would be much lower. We can afford to have Lindstrom as our closer, he's the least of our problems.
June 7, 200917 yr Author I think everyone should also give Miller props for a pretty good start, save for one inning. He was perfect through 4 innings, throwing only what, 8 pitches in the first? I want to see more of that Andrew Miller.
June 7, 200917 yr Great Game for Andrew Miller, i honestly thought he'd go the distance at the pace he was going, 52 Pitches in 5 innings! Too bad the rain delay really slowed him down and having him warm up 3 times before coming back out Hanley's still hot, Cantu and Uggla came through, Cogs had a nice bunt hit a stolen base and Lindstrom was f***ed over by the ump who was terrible. My only question is where is Hermida?
June 7, 200917 yr Also, worth noting, Brett Carroll missed the second out when he badly played a foul ball that he should have caught. That guy ended up walking and scoring.

In his defense he slid in that puddle in the corner of the foul line, but still he did misjudge the ball, but all Lindtrom had Aurilia K'd except the UMP forgot how to say Strike Three. What a Bum

June 7, 200917 yr Good win. Lets hope that Andrew Miller continues to build on these starts and finally become the pitcher that we hoped he should be by now. The Hopper is still being the man for us, I hope he can keep it up because we need him.
June 7, 200917 yr I've always thought the closer's role was to come on in the ninth and get three outs with no hits. Can't remember Lindstrom doing that.
June 7, 200917 yr Andrew Miller looked pretty damn good in that start. If he hadn't been disrupted by the rain I think he could of cruised through 8 innings or something. In his 5 starts since returning off the DL, Miller is 2-1 with a 3.21 ERA and 26 strikeouts in 28 innings. The only negative is that he has given up 15 walks, however he only had 1 walk in 5.2 innings last night which is a major step in the right direction.
June 7, 200917 yr Also, worth noting, Brett Carroll missed the second out when he badly played a foul ball that he should have caught. That guy ended up walking and scoring. I was listening to that on the radio because I had to leave during the 7th inning stretch to pick up the wife in Boynton Beach. Radio made it sound like that was his only real shot at catching that foul because of the conditions. Slide in and catch it or full speed into it and the wall. We all know what happens when he goes full bore into walls. But I have no idea what angle he took to get to it either, so I pass to Rab on judgement. I've been trying to think of when I felt real comfortable when we had a closer come into games. Maybe a bit when Kevin was still Superman on these boards? Even Dragon Slayer was an edge of your seat type closer. In any case, good to see Fredi has him on a short leash.

Anything personal is my business.

Maybe it's just me, but I'm not very confident with Mr. 1.84 WHIP at the moment closing games. He has almost walked a batter per inning, and he's surrendered more hits than innings pitched. That sure is wonderful. Matt Lindstrom...Playing With Fire. But hey, it's ok. B/c he's not really "the closer," like Gregg was last year. "The closer" cleans up his own mess. Fredi seems to be making it pretty clear that he's, at least, not going to wait for Matt to blow the games like Gregg did last year. If Lindstrom is cold, he's at least shown he's willing to take him out. As far as Carroll not being able to catch one last night...I'm not sure, but DVH didn't make it sound as routine on the radio. And I'm certain he wasn't lying about it being slippery out there. Considering Carroll is our best defensive outfielder/very good out there, I'm willing to bet he didn't just miss out on a routine fly ball.
June 7, 200917 yr Btw, I'd like to add that for those just using "saves," please lets stop using overrated stats. Use 'em correctly. 1 run saves: 3 2 run saves: 4 3 run saves: 4 It's not difficult to come in and pitch 1 inning, have an ERA of 9 or 18 in that game, and get a "save." That's why I think the role is a bit overrated, as I've said, and I'm not the only one to think so. Often times, a middle reliever's job in a game is more important in that game b/c he's coming in in a tougher situation. Often times, a closer isn't the best reliever on his team...yet, the closer will always get more cash come arbritration time, just b/c he's getting "saves."

It's not difficult to come in and pitch 1 inning, and get a "save." That's why I think the role is a bit overrated, as I've said, and I'm not the only one to think so. I disagree and here is why. Closers come into a game when it has hit its peak in intensity. So, they are left to find the strike zone, which tends to shrink considerably in the 9th inning. They are to find a rhythmn immediately against hitters that have seen pitches the whole game (advantage goes to the hitters IMO-unless a pinch hitter is announced). The other team is gearing up more in the 9th than any other inning played. It must not be too overrated since closer's are paid so much more money than any other bullpen arm. There must be some value attributed to being able to be the stopper in the 9th. Teams see it being extremely valuable shelling out tons of money to have that guy in the 9th. Brad Lidge made it look easy last year, this year it is a different story (not that easy by any means). Lindstrom's problem is that he walks too many people. As soon as Uribe got that double he fell apart and that can't happen. Instead of challenging hitters he was shying away from them. With a 3 run lead you can't walk people! The problem we have s that we have no clue what Matt Lindstrom we are getting in the 9th. Are we going to get the dominating Lindstrom or the inconsistent, need to take heart medication Lindstrom? He'll be lights out for 2 games and then come in and load the bases with a 3 run lead. I can see where everyone would be frustrated, I'm frustrated too. Put Nunez in there and let's see if he can do any better. I'm all for it. Then when he fails, and you know he will (everyone does), we can have something else to talk about. The important thing is that we are winning games.
June 7, 200917 yr If you guys are having problems with Lindstrom then you'd go crazy with Lidge who has 6 Blown Saves, Fuentes with 3, Hanrahan with 3, Miek Gonzalez with 3 etc. the list goes on with about 4 more picthers who have 3 or more Blown Saves and your all over Lindstrom for only blowing 2 but having a high ERA? Not Everyone is Trevor Hoffman and even Mariano blew a save last night. Lindstrom has show his upside with the slider and we all know about his fastball, give him a break and wait until he gets into midseason form.

The important thing is that we are winning games. 1. I never said it was easy. I said it was overrated. There have been plenty of articles agreeing with me, as well. Middle relievers are just as important as closers. 2. Why will Leo Nunez automatically fail? B/c you say so? That's hypocritical. I remember all the people who bashed me for saying that Lindstrom wasn't deserving of pitching for Team U.S.A. The excuse was "he's improved, lets see how he does." Well, Leo Nunez has outpitched Matt Lindstrom, easily. He has cleaned Lindstrom's mess twice now. Why can't we say the same for him? B/c he doesn't throw 100?
