August 17, 200916 yr From Clark Spencer's Twitter: Is Gaby Sanchez about to rejoin #Marlins due to Nick Johnson injury? Sanchez leaves today's New Orleans game after 3 inns. Hmm. I hope if its true that they keep with Bonifacio in the utility role and give Gaby his chance to start....
August 17, 200916 yr Man i hope we dont lose Johnson. Hes added so much to this lineup. I hope Gaby is just leaving for a stomach problem or something.
August 17, 200916 yr Johnson's injury may not be that serious and he would still miss a few days. You don't want to rush guys back from even minor injuries when it involves sensitive muscles because its easy to aggravate it. It's better to have a good fall-back option and the really logical choice is to have Gaby come up and send a pitcher down.
August 17, 200916 yr So it takes an injury from a guy we acquired at the trade deadline to get Gaby to start. Nice.
August 17, 200916 yr Gload and Helms should platoon and bat 2nd. Lord knows they deserve it Wes Helms has a .668 OPS, and only splits to .706 vs LHP. Everyone's favorite Bonifacio is hitting better than that, .726 vs LHP. Gload does have an .821 OPS vs RHP, and .757 overall. That's OK for platoonsville, but Helms? He deserves more bench time and the occasional pinch hit which is the only thing he's remotely useful for.
August 17, 200916 yr hmm rather get morrison and let him have a shot honestly I know it is rushing but his K/BB ratio could progress nicely in the big leagues still I think and giving him a 3-5 day test would mean he could then be on the post season roster if he does well enough.
August 17, 200916 yr Sanchez has been hot lately, I'd love to see him finally get a chance at 1B this year
August 17, 200916 yr Well they were carrying 13 pitchers, so they could have used the extra bat anyway. If not for the Johnson injury, it probably would have been Carroll called up. Hopefully Nick is going to be able to play in Houston.
August 17, 200916 yr Sanchez is indeed joining the team in Houston, no roster move yet however. Per Clark Spencer and the Miami Herald tweet
August 18, 200916 yr They should start Sanchez. He has been on a tear in Triple-A New Orleans, hitting .421 with 4 HRs in his last 10 games.
August 18, 200916 yr If its anything like his last stint the FO just wants someone to keep the bench company.
August 18, 200916 yr Hopefully he starts. We need to give him a chance. Hopefully Nick Johnson is healthy. But, yeah.
August 18, 200916 yr Hopefully he starts. We need to give him a chance. Why do we "need" to give him anything? I don't think Sanchez should come up again just to sit on the bench like last time but beyond that he's the 25th man. There's the chance he joins the team (as in meets the team, not as in is activated) in Houston only to be shipped back if Johnson is healthy and able to go or healthy enough not to go on the DL with a couple more days rest. We have three guys who can play first besides Johnson, maybe I'm 100% wrong but I think the only way Sanchez sees anything resembling serious playing time is if Johnson winds up on the DL and I doubt the Marlins will take making that decision lightly.

I didn't mean to say need. Should would have been a better word.

Hammy's are a touchy thing to judge, but I do agree with ya here. I think he's an insurance policy. Only if NJ ends up on the DL does he get activated, and then only in a bench role. I can't see taking the chance of starting him on a regular basis, or even in a platoon situation, in a play off hunt and hoping he finally has MLB pitching figured out (not to mention has improved his glove) when we have guys now that can platoon and do a fine job both defensively and with their bats. That would leave us with a "depleted" bench and I can only guess he fills that void. Sparingly. And going by recent history at this level, probably very sparingly. The FO and coaching staff have already shown they don't have the same confidence in him as some here do. I don't see why that would change just because Nick the Stick is injured. "Only if NJ ends up on the DL" are the key words here. The way our 3,4,and 5 SPs are going we need to carry 13 pitchers. I just read Anibal may/should be back this week (not a bad outing Monday for Jax) but we can count on him being on a pitch count his first couple games at least. I would be surprised and disappointed if Gaby replaced a pitcher on the roster with the bats of Houston and Atlanta on the horizon.
August 18, 200916 yr Not to say it won't happen but there's no roster move yet. On the otherhand they are in another time zone this morning so it might be early to be making decisions on how Johnson is progressing too.
August 18, 200916 yr Author #Marlins option rhp rick vandenhurk to New Orleans, recall 1b gaby sanchez from NO With Hurk down, I guess that means Anibal is ready to rejoin the team.
August 18, 200916 yr I'm still waiting for Bronco to explain what he means when he implies that Gaby has ever even had an opportunity to figure out Major League starting pitching.
